Pleurotheciales is the largest order in Savoryellomycetidae with a large proportion of species known from freshwater habitats. In order to investigate the phylogenetic relationships of taxa within Pleurotheciales and contribute to their diversity, submerged wood was collected from freshwater habitats in China (Yunnan Province) and Thailand. Two dematiaceous, sporodochial hyphomycetes and one annulatascales-like ascomycete with unusual morphology as compared to extant ones were discovered. They were subjected to DNA-based phylogenetic analyses and the results revealed three distinct lineages in Savoryellomycetidae. This morpho-phylo taxonomic study supports the establishment of five novel taxa including two novel genera, Obliquifusoideum and Saprodesmium, and three novel species, Coleodictyospora muriformis, Obliquifusoideum guttulatum and Saprodesmium dematiosporum. Coleodictyospora muriformis and S. dematiosporum are placed in Pleurotheciales, while O. guttulatum is referred to Savoryellomycetidae genera incertae sedis. The phylogenetic relationships are also presented for Coleodictyospora and Pseudocoleodictyospora, which raises an intriguing taxonomic issue. These two genera are positioned in two different classes, viz Sordariomycetes and Dothideomycetes, although they are quite similar except for the presence of a conidial sheath. This study expands our knowledge of the fungal diversity of freshwater fungi, and also indicates that Pleurotheciales species are mostly found in freshwater habitats.

An investigation of freshwater fungi in Thailand resulted in the collection of one new monotypic genus, Neoxylomyces, and a novel species each in Camposporium, Brunneofusispora, Rattania, Neoxylomyces, and Phaeoacremonium. Camposporium dulciaquae resembles C. septatum in conidial morphology and number of septa but differs in conidial sizes. Brunneofusispora hyalina is similar to B. sinensis in conidiogenesis and conidial shape but differs in the sizes of conidiomata and conidiogenous cells. Rattania aquatica is the second species in Rattania, while Phaeoacremonium thailandense is the third species recorded from freshwater habitats. A new genus, Neoxylomyces, typified by N. multiseptatus, is similar to Xylomyces giganteus, but differs in the number of septa, chlamydospore measurements, and absence of a mucilaginous coating around the chlamydospores. These novel taxa form an independent lineage distinct from other species based on multi-loci phylogenetic analyses. Descriptions, illustrations, and notes are provided for each taxon. These new freshwater ascomycetes add to the increasing number of fungi known from Thailand and it is now evident that there are numerous novel taxa awaiting to be described as new freshwater habitats are explored. An update of newly discovered taxa in the widely studied freshwater habitats of Thailand over the last five years is also provided.

During investigations into freshwater fungi from the Great Mekong Subregion, four Distoseptispora taxa were collected from China and Thailand. Based on morphological characteristics, and phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, ITS, SSU, TEF1-α, and RPB2 sequence data, two new species Distoseptispora bangkokensis and D. lancangjiangensis are introduced, and two known species D. clematidis and D. thysanolaenae were first reported in freshwater habitat. Illustrations and descriptions of these taxa are provided, along with comparisons with extant taxa in the genus.

A new species ofPhaeoacremonium,P.ovale(Togniniaceae), was isolated during a diversity study of freshwater fungi from Yunnan Province in China. Morphological and cultural studies of the fungus were carried out and its sexual and asexual morphs (holomorph) are introduced herein. This species is characterised by peculiar long-necked, semi-immersed ascomata with oval to ellipsoid ascospores and ellipsoid to ovoid conidia. Phylogenetic analyses of a combined TUB and ACT gene dataset revealed that strains ofP.ovaleconstitute a strongly supported independent lineage and are related toP.griseo-olivaceumandP.africanum. The number of nucleotide differences, across the genes analysed, also supports establishment ofP.ovaleas a new species.

During a survey on diversity of freshwater fungi along a north-south latitudinal gradient in Asia, three fresh specimens of Minimelanolocus were collected from submerged wood in streams in northwestern Yunnan Province, China. Based on their distinct morphological features and phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, LSU and SSU sequence data, Minimelanolocus nujiangensis and M. clavatus are described as new species and M. submersus was recollected from Yunnan, China. Illustrations and descriptions with notes of the three species are provided. This study increases the known diversity of Minimelanolocus and enriches freshwater fungal resources.

Asexual morph members of Tetraplosphaeriaceae (Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes) are generally hyphomycetes and usually found as saprobes occurring on various hosts in lentic habitats. Two isolates of a novel species, Tetraploa aquatica sp. nov., was collected from submerged decaying wood in Dulong river and a stream of Gaoligongshan mountain in Yunnan Province, China. The new species is characterized by short-cylindrical conidia, composed of 4-euseptate, short-cylindrical vertical columns which are verrucose at the base and with 4-setose vertical septate appendages. Tetraploa aquatica can be easily distinguished from other Tetraploa species by their columns which are 2–3-septate, aguttulate, vertical, setose appendaged which tend to remain parallel to one another apically. Phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, ITS and SSU sequence data support its natural placement in Tetraploa. Detailed description and illustrations of this species and comparisons with other morphologically similar taxa in Tetraploa are provided.

A novel species, Distoseptispora longispora, from submerged wood in Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. The fungus is characterized by macronematous, mononematous, septate conidiophores with monoblastic, integrated, determinate, terminal conidiogenous cells that produce acrogenous, solitary, obclavate, elongated, distoseptate conidia. SSU-ITS-LSU sequence analyses were used to infer the phylogenetic relationship between D. longispora and related species. Both molecular analyses and morphological data well support D. longispora as an independent taxon. A key to Distoseptispora species is provided.

An endophytic member of the genus Trichoderma was isolated from the root of a healthy 3-year-old Panax notoginseng in Yunnan province, PR China. The results of phylogenetic analyses based on a combined of ITS, tef1 and rpb2 indicated that this isolate was distinct from other species of the genus Trichoderma and closely related to Trichoderma songyi. It can be distinguished from T. songyi by its slower growth rates on PDA and colony morphology. The novel isolate formed conidia in thick white pustules scattered mostly at the margin. Its conidiophores tended to be regularly verticillium-like, little branched, sometimes substituted by phialides singly or in whorls. Conidia are smooth, mostly broadly subglobose to ellipsoidal. In combination with the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics, all data demonstrated that the fungus studied represented a unique and distinguishable novel species of the genus Trichoderma, for which the name Trichoderma panacis sp. nov. is proposed.

Amphibambusa hongheensis sp. nov. was collected from dead bamboo culms in Honghe County of Yunnan Province, China. The novel species is introduced based on the morpho-molecular approach. Morphologically, A. hongheensis fits well with Amphibambusa and is characterized by immersed, globose to subglobose ascomata, with protruding carbonaceous papilla, unitunicate, cylindrical to elongate fusiform, subsessile to short pedicellate asci with a J+, subapical ring, and fusiform, hyaline to pale brown, 1-septate ascospores, longitudinally striated, and surrounded by a thick mucilaginous sheath. Phylogenetic analyses of a concatenated ITS-LSU sequence dataset based on maximum-likelihood and Bayesian inference criteria revealed the phylogenetic affinity of A. hongheensis within Cainiaceae (Xylariales, Sordariomycetes). Amphibambusa hongheensis formed an independent subclade sister to A. bambusicola with moderate support (81% ML, 0.96 PP) and clustered with the genus Arecophila in Cainiaceae. Amphibambusa hongheensis is the second species accommodated in Amphibambusa and is reported from Yunnan, China, for the first time. Detailed description, illustration and updated phylogeny are provided.

A thermophilic actinomycete, strain LA5T, was isolated from a hot spring in Yunnan province, People's Republic of China. The isolate grew aerobically at temperatures of 50–75 °C. Aerobic mycelia were not observed. Single spores were produced along the substrate hypha. Strain LA5T was characterized chemotaxonomically by having MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone and iso-C17 : 0 (27.7 %) and C16 : 0 (22.4 %) as the major fatty acids. The cell wall contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The DNA G+C content was 56.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain LA5T belongs to the genus Planifilum. Levels of DNA–DNA relatedness between strain LA5T and Planifilum fimeticola H0165T and Planifilum fulgidum 500275T were 43.6 and 52.7 %, respectively. On the basis of phenotypic properties and phylogeny, strain LA5T represents a novel species of the genus Planifilum, for which we propose the name Planifilum yunnanense sp. nov., with the type strain LA5T (=CCTCC AA206002T=KCTC 13052T).

Asexual morphs of freshwater fungi have been mostly reported from tropical and subtropical regions. From our ongoing investigation of the diversity and taxonomy of freshwater microfungi in Thailand, a country with rich natural resources and diverse ecosystems, Parafuscosporella ellipsoconidiogena sp. nov. and P. obovata sp. nov., collected from decaying submerged twigs at Phalad Waterfall in a conserved forest in Chiang Mai Zoo, Chiang Mai Province, northern Thailand, are proposed. DNA phylogenies based on a combination of ITS and LSU datasets support the placement of these species in Parafuscosporella (Fuscosporellaceae, Fuscosporellales, Sordariomycetes), and these two novel species differ from known species in terms of morphology. Detailed descriptions, illustrations and a key to Parafuscosporella species are provided, as well as comparisons with other accepted Parafuscosporella species.
