An investigation of freshwater fungi in Thailand resulted in the collection of one new monotypic genus, Neoxylomyces, and a novel species each in Camposporium, Brunneofusispora, Rattania, Neoxylomyces, and Phaeoacremonium. Camposporium dulciaquae resembles C. septatum in conidial morphology and number of septa but differs in conidial sizes. Brunneofusispora hyalina is similar to B. sinensis in conidiogenesis and conidial shape but differs in the sizes of conidiomata and conidiogenous cells. Rattania aquatica is the second species in Rattania, while Phaeoacremonium thailandense is the third species recorded from freshwater habitats. A new genus, Neoxylomyces, typified by N. multiseptatus, is similar to Xylomyces giganteus, but differs in the number of septa, chlamydospore measurements, and absence of a mucilaginous coating around the chlamydospores. These novel taxa form an independent lineage distinct from other species based on multi-loci phylogenetic analyses. Descriptions, illustrations, and notes are provided for each taxon. These new freshwater ascomycetes add to the increasing number of fungi known from Thailand and it is now evident that there are numerous novel taxa awaiting to be described as new freshwater habitats are explored. An update of newly discovered taxa in the widely studied freshwater habitats of Thailand over the last five years is also provided.

Pleurotheciales is the largest order in Savoryellomycetidae with a large proportion of species known from freshwater habitats. In order to investigate the phylogenetic relationships of taxa within Pleurotheciales and contribute to their diversity, submerged wood was collected from freshwater habitats in China (Yunnan Province) and Thailand. Two dematiaceous, sporodochial hyphomycetes and one annulatascales-like ascomycete with unusual morphology as compared to extant ones were discovered. They were subjected to DNA-based phylogenetic analyses and the results revealed three distinct lineages in Savoryellomycetidae. This morpho-phylo taxonomic study supports the establishment of five novel taxa including two novel genera, Obliquifusoideum and Saprodesmium, and three novel species, Coleodictyospora muriformis, Obliquifusoideum guttulatum and Saprodesmium dematiosporum. Coleodictyospora muriformis and S. dematiosporum are placed in Pleurotheciales, while O. guttulatum is referred to Savoryellomycetidae genera incertae sedis. The phylogenetic relationships are also presented for Coleodictyospora and Pseudocoleodictyospora, which raises an intriguing taxonomic issue. These two genera are positioned in two different classes, viz Sordariomycetes and Dothideomycetes, although they are quite similar except for the presence of a conidial sheath. This study expands our knowledge of the fungal diversity of freshwater fungi, and also indicates that Pleurotheciales species are mostly found in freshwater habitats.

During investigations into freshwater fungi from the Great Mekong Subregion, four Distoseptispora taxa were collected from China and Thailand. Based on morphological characteristics, and phylogenetic analyses of combined LSU, ITS, SSU, TEF1-α, and RPB2 sequence data, two new species Distoseptispora bangkokensis and D. lancangjiangensis are introduced, and two known species D. clematidis and D. thysanolaenae were first reported in freshwater habitat. Illustrations and descriptions of these taxa are provided, along with comparisons with extant taxa in the genus.

Mexico has the third highest diversity of passalid beetles in the World. Here we describe Tonantzin new genus, a new monotypic genus, potentially endemic to the mountains of central Mexico. The new genus is diagnosed by a new configuration of characters from the mesofrontal structure (MFS) in addition to other characters. The MFS in Passalidae has been treated either as a composite complex character or a combination of individual characters. Using a broad taxonomic sample within Proculini, we discuss the taxonomic and systematic implications of the MFS for the tribe. We define the MFS type tepetl. Given the importance of the MFS for passalid taxonomy we propose a new delimitation of the structure using boundaries based on internal and external head structures. We argue that the treatment of the MFS as a complex character better captures the nature of this structure but we ultimately find a need to standardize the way in which this structure is described in the taxonomic literature and used in phylogenetic analyses.

An obligately aerobic, Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, non-motile, spherical bacterium, designated strain 04OKA010-24T, was isolated from seawater surrounding the hard coral Galaxea fascicularis L., collected at Majanohama, Akajima, Japan, and was subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic study. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that the new strain represented a member of the phylum ‘Verrucomicrobia’ and shared 84–95 % sequence similarity with cultivated strains of ‘Verrucomicrobia’ subdivision 4. Amino acid analysis of the cell-wall hydrolysate indicated the absence of muramic acid and diaminopimelic acid, which suggested that the strain did not contain peptidoglycan in the cell wall. The G+C content of the DNA was 53.9 mol%. MK-7 was the major menaquinone and C14 : 0, C18 : 1 ω9c and C18 : 0 were the major fatty acids. On the basis of these data, it was concluded that strain 04OKA010-24T represents a novel species in a new genus in subdivision 4 of the phylum ‘Verrucomicrobia’, for which the name Coraliomargarita akajimensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Coraliomargarita akajimensis is 04OKA010-24T (=MBIC06463T=IAM 15411T=KCTC 12865T).

Strains TU-16T and TU-18, two non-pigmented bacterial isolates with an optimum growth temperature of about 45 °C and an optimum pH of about 8·5–9·0, were recovered from the Furnas geothermal area on the Island of São Miguel in the Azores. Phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence of these strains indicated that they represent a novel species in a new genus of the phylum Betaproteobacteria. The major fatty acids of strains TU-16T and TU-18 were 16 : 0 and 18 : 1ω7c. Ubiquinone 8 was the major respiratory quinone and the major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. The novel isolates were aerobic; thiosulfate was oxidized to sulfate in the presence of a metabolizable carbon source. The organism assimilated organic acids and amino acids, but did not assimilate carbohydrates or polyols. Based on phylogenetic analyses and physiological and biochemical characteristics, it is proposed that strain TU-16T (=LMG 23030T=CIP 108724T) represents the type strain of a novel species in a new genus, Tepidicella xavieri gen. nov., sp. nov.

Taxonomic re-examination of the Gammiella ceylonensis complex is done in the light of Sematophyllaceae-Pylaisiadelphaceae circumscription based on morphological and molecular (cpDNAs: rbcL, rps4, and trnL-F) phylogenetic analyses. Three new genera are proposed to accommodate the newly recognized clades. The first is Clastobryellina that is raised from a section level under Clastobryella to include four species—two are existing species with new combinations proposed here (C. ceylonensis, C. merrillii), and two are new species described here (C. lutea, C. orientalis). Clastobryum sect. Clastobryellina is lectotypified by Clastobryum merrillii. The second is Bonnosukea, a new genus described to accommodate only B. serrulata, which is formerly included in Clastobryum, but is shown to be sister to the genus. The last is Microgammiella, a new monotypic genus that is sister to Aptychella, with a newly described species M. flagelliformis. Three species of Clastobryellina, except for a northern Thailand endemic C. lutea, show wide and disjunct distribution in East Asia.

Asexual morphs of freshwater fungi have been mostly reported from tropical and subtropical regions. From our ongoing investigation of the diversity and taxonomy of freshwater microfungi in Thailand, a country with rich natural resources and diverse ecosystems, Parafuscosporella ellipsoconidiogena sp. nov. and P. obovata sp. nov., collected from decaying submerged twigs at Phalad Waterfall in a conserved forest in Chiang Mai Zoo, Chiang Mai Province, northern Thailand, are proposed. DNA phylogenies based on a combination of ITS and LSU datasets support the placement of these species in Parafuscosporella (Fuscosporellaceae, Fuscosporellales, Sordariomycetes), and these two novel species differ from known species in terms of morphology. Detailed descriptions, illustrations and a key to Parafuscosporella species are provided, as well as comparisons with other accepted Parafuscosporella species.

A new species ofPhaeoacremonium,P.ovale(Togniniaceae), was isolated during a diversity study of freshwater fungi from Yunnan Province in China. Morphological and cultural studies of the fungus were carried out and its sexual and asexual morphs (holomorph) are introduced herein. This species is characterised by peculiar long-necked, semi-immersed ascomata with oval to ellipsoid ascospores and ellipsoid to ovoid conidia. Phylogenetic analyses of a combined TUB and ACT gene dataset revealed that strains ofP.ovaleconstitute a strongly supported independent lineage and are related toP.griseo-olivaceumandP.africanum. The number of nucleotide differences, across the genes analysed, also supports establishment ofP.ovaleas a new species.

Three species of Peroneutypa were collected from dead wood in Thailand. Two new taxa P. diminutiasca and P. rubiformis are herein described, illustrated and compared with related taxa, based on the evidence from morphology and phylogenetic analyses. Details for the holomorphs of P. rubiformis and the third species P. scoparia are provided. Phylogenetic analyses of a combined ITS and TUB2 DNA sequence dataset support their placement in the genus Peroneutypa  (Diatrypaceae, Xylariales). An updated key to Peroneutypa species is also provided.

A cladistic analysis based on 274 morphological characters was performed including the 13 previously recognized speciesof the scale mite genus Hirstiella, 2 new species, 5 species in closely related genera, and 3 more distant out-group species.An analysis based on 148 informative characters resulted in one most parsimonious tree (L = 400, CI = 0.57 and RI =0.79). According to this, the genus Hirstiella in its current concept is a polyphyletic taxon whose member species belongto three different clades. The first lineage (Bremer support and jackknife values 2 and 78%) includes the type species H.trombidiiformis and seven additional species of Hirstiella that are parasites on iguanian lizards. The genus Geckobiella isincluded in this lineage, and the latter taxon name has priority over Hirstiella; therefore, the genus Hirstiella is considereda synonym of Geckobiella and no longer valid. For the second lineage (Bremer support and jackknife values of 2 and 73%)we propose the name Bertrandiella gen. nov.; it includes H. tenuipes, H. otophila, H. jimenezi and Bertrandiella chame-laensis sp. nov. The third lineage, and sister taxon of Bertrandiella, is a clade comprising Pimeliaphilus and the speciesH. sharifi and H. insignis. The latter taxa are transferred back to Pimeliaphilus (Bremer support and jackknife values >4and 100%). Updated diagnoses are provided for the genera Geckobiella sensu nov. (including a new species Geckobielladonnae sp. nov.) and Bertrandiella gen. nov., and for all their species, as well as for the genera Pimeliaphilus sensu nov.and Tequisistlana, based on the results of the phylogenetic analyses. The analyses support the hypothesis that lizards arethe ancestral hosts for Pterygosomatidae; associations with arthropods (in Pimeliaphilus) appear to be secondary, the result of host switching from lizards.
