Background: Many epidemiological and experimental studies have established that myopia is caused by a complex interaction between common genetic and environmental factors. The objective of this study was to describe and compare the allelic and genotypic frequencies of the rs524952 (GJD2), rs8000973 (ZIC2), rs1881492 (CHRNG), rs1656404 (PRSS56), rs235770 (BMP2), and rs7744813 (KCNQ5) SNPs (single-nucleotide polymorphism) between responder and nonresponder patients who had undergone a two-year treatment with lenses for myopia control. Method: Twenty-eight participants from the MiSight Assessment Study Spain (MASS), who had received treatment for myopia control for two years with MiSight contact lenses, were examined. The criteria for better/worse treatment response was the change in the axial length (< / ≥ 0.22 mm two years after the treatment). The clinical procedure consisted of the extraction of a saliva sample, and the participants also underwent an optometric examination. Genetic data were analyzed using SNPStats software (Catalan Institute of Oncology, Barcelona, Spain), and statistical analysis was performed using SPSS v.25 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Demographic variables were analyzed using the Student’s t-test. Results: The T allele, the one with the lowest frequency, of the “rs235770” SNP was associated with a better treatment response [AL/CR (axial length/corneal radius): OR = 3.37; CI = 1.079–10.886; SE (spherical equivalent): OR = 1.26; CI: = 0.519–57.169; p = 0.019). By performing haplotype analysis, significant differences were found between the rs235770…rs1881492 and rs235770–rs1656404 polymorphisms. The latter presented a strong linkage disequilibrium with each other (r2 ≥ 0.54). Conclusion: The result of lens therapies for myopia control could vary depending on genetic variants. Studies with a larger sample are needed to confirm the results presented in this pilot study.

The goal of this retrospective case series is to demonstrate the effectivity of combination low-dose atropine therapy with peripheral defocus, double concentric circle design with a center distance soft contact lenses at controlling myopia progression over 1 year of treatment. Included in this series are 3 female children aged 8–10 years with progressing myopia averaging −4.37 ± 0.88 D at the beginning of treatment. Their average annual myopic progression during the 3 years prior to therapy was 1.12 ± 0.75 D. They had not attempted any myopia control treatments prior to this therapy. The children were treated with a combination of 0.01% atropine therapy with spherical peripheral defocus daily replacement soft lenses MiSight® 1 day (Cooper Vision, Phoenix, AZ, USA). They underwent cycloplegic refraction, and a slit-lamp evaluation every 6 months which confirmed no adverse reactions or staining was present. Each of the 3 children exhibited an average of 0.25 ± 0.25 D of myopia progression at the end of 1 year of treatment. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first published study exhibiting that combining low-dose atropine and peripheral defocus soft contact lenses is effective at controlling children’s moderate to severe myopia progression during 1 year of therapy.

This paper presents a tracking control method for pneumatic muscle actuators (PMAs). Considering that the PMA platform only feedbacks position, and the velocity and disturbances cannot be observed directly, we use the extended-state-observer (ESO) for simultaneously estimating the system states and disturbances by using measurable variables. Integrated with the ESO, a super twisting controller (STC) is design based on estimated states to realize the high-precision tracking. According to the Lyapunov theorem, the stability of the closed-loop system is ensured. Simulation and experimental studies are conducted, and the results show the convergence of the ESO and the effectiveness of the proposed method.

As a promising active flow control method, boundary layer suction (BLS) can be used to enhance the aerodynamic performance of the highly-loaded compressor effectively, and due to this reason, extensive studies have been carried out on it. However, contrast to those abundant studies focusing on the flow control effects of BLS, little attention has been paid on the design method of the aspiration flow path. This work presents a 3-D steady numerical simulation on a highly-loaded aspirated compressor cascade. The aspiration slot is implemented at its best location based on the previous experimental studies and the aspiration flow rate is fix to 1.5% of the inlet massflow. The plenum configuration follows the blade shape and remains unchanged. One-side-aspiration manner is adopted to simplify the aspiration devices. Two critical geometry parameters, slot angle and slot width, are varied to study the effects of blade aspiration slot configuration on the cascade loss, radial distribution of the aspiration flow rate and inner flow structures within the aspiration flow path. Results show that the slot configuration does affect the cascade performance. In comparison with the throughflow performance, it is especially true once the flow loss caused by the aspiration flow path is also taken into account, and higher flow loss will be generated within the aspiration flow path if an inappropriate scheme is adopted. In the present investigation, apart from the cases with larger negative slot angle, a wider slot is more preferable to a narrower one, since it could enhance the aspiration capacity near the endwall regions and lower the dissipation loss within the aspiration flow path. In terms of the slot angle, a larger negative value, i.e., the slot direction more aligned with the incoming flow, is not beneficial to improve the throughflow performance, while concerning the flow loss yield by the aspiration flow path, a proper negative slot angle is always optimal.

OBJECTIVE: The study presents the Brazilian norms for 240 new stimuli from International Affective Picture System (IAPS), a database of affective images widely used in research, compared to the North-American normative ratings. METHODS: The participants were 448 Brazilian university students from several courses (269 women and 179 men) with mean age of 24.2 (SD = 7.8), that evaluated the IAPS pictures in the valence, arousal and dominance dimensions by the Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) scales. Data were compared across the populations by Pearson linear correlation and Student's t-tests. RESULTS: Correlations were highly significant for all dimensions; however, Brazilians' averages for arousal were higher than North-Americans'. CONCLUSIONS: The results show stability in relation to the first part of the Brazilian standardization and they are also consistent with the North-American standards, despite minor differences relating to interpretation of the arousal dimension, demonstrating that IAPS is a reliable instrument for experimental studies in the Brazilian population.

Introduction. The study is relevant due to the fact that in the context of the use of special forces of the Russian Guard to counter the increased threat to Russia's national security from terrorist organizations, the problem arose of finding means to form a "new look" of a special forces officer. The question is raised about an integrative approach in the development of professional qualities of future officers of the special forces of the National Guard troops. Materials and methods. The experimental study involved 160 cadets of the Special Forces Faculty of the Novosibirsk Military Institute of the National Guard of the Russian Federation named after I. K. Yakovlev. The following methods were used: according to moral qualities (motivation for success, Ehlers methodology, value-semantic organization of a personality, methodology for studying the volitional organization of a personality (scale of value-semantic organization of a personality), according to psychological qualities (volitional self-regulation, the methodology by Zverkov and Ehidman, neuropsychic stability, Rybnikov's methodology "Forecast 2", readiness to take risks, Schubert's method), according to physical qualities (mastering professionally applied operations; the control method and testing were used to assess the level of development). The statistical analysis was performed using Student's t-test and Pearson's χ2 test. Results. By the fifth year of studying, as a result of implementing the program "Prospects for the optimal development of professional qualities among cadets of the Special Forces Faculty of the Military Institute of the National Guard Troops", most cadets show a significant increase in terms of the development of moral, mental, and physical qualities. In particular, statistically significant changes were revealed in: the level of neuropsychic stability (χ2 = 10.225; p < 0.01); the level of risk readiness (χ2 = 13.298; p < 0.01); the level of motivation for success (χ2 = 17.045; p < 0.001); development of the value-semantic organization of the personality (χ2 = 18.240; p < 0.001). Conclusion. The main direction of further research is to optimize the professional training of special forces officers, which will improve the level of professional training of a graduate of the Special Forces Faculty of the Military Institute of the National Guard Troops.
