In this study, we proposed a method to improve the safety level of control software (CSW) by managing the CSW’s design information and safety analysis results, and combining failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and fault tree analysis (FTA). Here, the CSW is developed using structured analysis and design methodology. In the upper stage of the CSW’s development process, as the input of the preliminary design information (data flow diagrams (DFDs) and control flow diagrams (CFDs)), the causes of undesirable events of the CSW are clarified by FMEA, and the countermeasures are reflected in the preliminary design information. In the lower stage of the CSW’s development process, as the inputs of the detailed design information (DFDs and CFDs in the lower level) and programs, the causes of the specific undesirable event are clarified by FTA, and the countermeasures are reflected in the detailed design specifications and programs. The processes are repeated until the impact of undesirable events become the acceptable safety level. By applying the proposed method to the CSW installed into a communication control equipment on the space system, we clarified several undesirable events and adopted adequate countermeasures. Consequently, a safer CSW is developed by applying the proposed method.

The use of Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) techniques at the preliminary design phase (PMDO) of a gas turbine engine allows investing more effort at the pre-detailed phase in order to prevent the selection of an unsatisfactory concept early in the design process. Considering the impact of the turbine tip clearance on an engine’s efficiency, an accurate tool to predict the tip gap is a mandatory step towards the implementation of a full PMDO system for the turbine design. Tip clearance calculation is a good candidate for PMDO technique implementation considering that it implies various analyses conducted on both the rotor and stator. As a first step to the development of such tip clearance calculator satisfying PMDO principles, the present work explores the automation feasibility of the whole analysis phase of a turbine rotor preliminary design process and the potential increase in the accuracy of results and time gains. The proposed conceptual system integrates a thermal boundary conditions automated calculator and interacts with a simplified air system generator and with several conception tools based on parameterized CAD models. Great improvements were found when comparing this work’s analysis results with regular pre-detailed level tools, as they revealed to be close to the one generated by the detailed design tools used as target. Moreover, this design process revealed to be faster than a common preliminary design phase while leading to a reduction of time spent at the detailed design phase. By requiring fewer user inputs, this system decreases the risk of human errors while entirely leaving the important decisions to the designer.

Abstract In this paper, we consider the problem of accelerating commercial product development by overlapping adjacent functions. We formulate an approach, called iterative overlapping, in which downstream development activities start with preliminary design information and incorporate upstream design changes in subsequent iterations. In the absence of careful control, iterative overlapping could cause excessive downstream rework and result in an increase in development time. We develop models of iterations and design change to help decide when upstream design information should be committed for downstream iterations. When applied to an automobile door panel development process at a US automaker, the models suggest improvements that would reduce development time by 27%.

In this paper, we discuss the problem of reducing product development lead time by overlapping coupled development activities through the exchange of preliminary design information. We present an approach, called iterative overlapping, in which downstream development activities begin with unfinalized upstream design information and accommodate design changes in subsequent iterations. In the absence of careful control, iterative overlapping could involve excessive downstream rework leading to an increase in lead time. We formulate the iterative overlapping problem and model iterations and design changes to determine how to overlap the activities for lead time reduction. The model is illustrated with application to an automobile door panel development process.

Практика показывает, что для сварных конструкций, эксплуатируемых в условиях Крайнего Севера необходимо уделять внимание работоспособности сварных соединений при низких температурах. Металл сварных соединений в процессе воздействия обработки изменяет свои свойства, снижается ударная вязкость, образуется гетерогенная структура с большой степенью разнозернистости. Чтобы оценивать и иметь возможность правильно контролировать термическое воздействие и последствия сварочного процесса, требуется решить задачу аналитического определения ударной вязкости для всех зон сварного соединения. В настоящей статье представлен инженерный метод оценки ударной вязкости, применимый для любой зоны сварного соединения, в которой имеется острый или особый концентратор напряжений – трещина. Разработанный аналитический метод расчета ударной вязкости отражает качественную и количественную картину взаимосвязи структурно-механических характеристик и работы развития трещины в диапазоне температур 77…300 К. Предложенная схематизация зависимости критического коэффициента интенсивности напряжений от температуры позволила найти коэффициенты, характеризующие свойства материала, и выполнить расчеты изменения предела текучести и предела прочности от температуры эксплуатации. Построены графики зависимости работы развития трещины от температуры эксплуатации для сталей 15ГС и 17ГС, сравнение которых с экспериментальными данными показывает удовлетворительное согласование. Найдено, что при напряжениях предела выносливости отношение работы развития трещины к критической длине трещины постоянно, не зависит от температуры и для сталей 15ГС и 17ГС равно около 10. For welded structures under operation in the Far North, attention must be paid to the performance of welded joints at low temperatures. The properties of metal of welded joints are changed in the process of treatment, its toughness decreases, and a heterogeneous structure with a large range of different grain sizes is formed. In order to evaluate and be able to correctly control the thermal effect and the consequences of the welding process, it is necessary to solve the problem of analytical determination of impact strength for all zones of the welded joint. The paper presents an engineering method for evaluation of the impact strength applicable to any area of the welded joint in which there is a sharp or super sharp stress concentrator – a crack. The developed analytical method for calculating the impact strength reflects a qualitative and quantitative codependency of structural and mechanical characteristics and the process of crack development in the temperature range of 77–300 K. The proposed schematization of dependence of the critical coefficient of stress intensity on the temperature made it possible to find coefficients characterizing the properties of the material and to perform calculations of changes in yield strength and tensile strength on operating temperature. Graphs of the crack development process dependency on the operating temperature for 15ГС and 17ГС steels were constructed, and their comparison with experimental data displays satisfactory agreement. It was found that at endurance limit stresses, the ratio of the crack development process to the critical crack length is constant, non-dependent on temperature, and is equal to 10 for 15ГС and 17ГС steels. The main contribution of this paper is the development of the job-family incivility scale. This paper seeks to explore the complex inter-relationships between workplace incivility and family incivility dimensions of job-family incivility by examining the dynamic processes by which job-family incivility is initiated and sustained using a scale development approach. In doing so, the paper highlights the absence of valid and reliable measures that estimate the compound effect of workplace incivility and family incivility – referred to as job-family incivility. A scale development process introduced by Quazi et al. (2016) is presented and stages in the construction of the scale are discussed including measures of validity and reliability. The findings of the study demonstrate the validity and reliability of the job-family incivility scale developed by the current researchers. The main aims of this research are to emphasize the impact of workplace incivility and family incivility on the employees in the work environment, and to discuss the techniques that can be used to mitigate such detrimental activities.

A laboratory river model for the study of self-purification inhibition in a stream containing toxic substances is presented. It enables an engineering - technological prediction of the impact of toxic substances or wastewaters on dissolved oxygen (DO) profile in an organically polluted river downstream from the point of entry of toxic effluent thus providing rapidly and inexpensively significant design information to an environmental scientist or engineer. The method was applied to the toxicity evaluation of wastewaters from electroplating industry. The effects of copper, cyanide (representing two significant constituents of this type of wastewaters) and wastewater from electroplating industry on the biodegradation of organic municipal pollution in receiving stream were evaluated experimentally.

As the impact factors of the waste Not-In-My-Back Yard (NIMBY) crisis are complex, and the scenario evolution path of it is diverse. Once the crisis is not handled properly, it will bring adverse effects on the construction of waste NIMBY facilities, economic development and social stability. Consequently, based on ground theory, this paper takes the waste NIMBY crisis in China from 2006 to 2019 as typical cases, through coding analysis, scenario evolution factors of waste NIMBY crisis are established. Furtherly, three key scenarios were obtained, namely, external situation (E), situation state (S), emergency management (M), what is more, scenario evolution law of waste NIMBY crisis is revealed. Then, the dynamic Bayesian network theory is used to construct the dynamic scenario evolution network of waste NIMBY crisis. Finally, based on the above models, Xiantao waste NIMBY crisis is taken as a case study, and the dynamic process of scenario evolution network is visually displayed by using Netica. The simulation results show that the scenario evolution network of Xiantao waste NIMBY crisis is basically consistent with the actual incident development process, which confirms the effectiveness and feasibility of the model.

Several natural threats characterize hard coal mining in Poland. The coexistence of methane and rock-burst hazards lowers the safety level during exploration. The most dangerous are high-energy bumps, which might cause rock-burst. Additionally, created during exploitation, safety pillars, which protect openings, might be the reason for the formation of so-called gas traps. In this part, rock mass is usually not disturbed and methane in seams that form the safety pillars is not dangerous as long as they remain intact. Nevertheless, during a rock-burst, a sudden methane outflow can occur. Preventing the existing hazards increases mining costs, and employing inadequate measures threatens the employees’ lives and limbs. Using two longwalls as examples, the authors discuss the consequences of the two natural hazards’ coexistence. In the area of longwall H-4 in seam 409/4, a rock-burst caused a release of approximately 545,000 cubic meters of methane into the excavations, which tripled methane concentration compared to the values from the period preceding the burst. In the second longwall (IV in seam 703/1), a bump was followed by a rock-burst, which reduced the amount of air flowing through the excavation by 30 percent compared to the airflow before, and methane release rose by 60 percent. The analyses presented in this article justify that research is needed to create and implement innovative methods of methane drainage from coal seams to capture methane more effectively at the stage of mining.

The success of a software application is related to users’ willingness to keep using it. In this sense, evaluating User eXperience (UX) became an important part of the software development process. Researchers have been carrying out studies by employing various methods to evaluate the UX of software products. Some studies reported varied and even contradictory results when applying different UX evaluation methods, making it difficult for practitioners to identify which results to rely upon. However, these works did not evaluate the developers’ perspectives and their impacts on the decision process. Moreover, such studies focused on one-shot evaluations, which cannot assess whether the methods provide the same big picture of the experience (i.e., deteriorating, improving, or stable). This paper presents a longitudinal study in which 68 students evaluated the UX of an online judge system by employing AttrakDiff, UEQ, and Sentence Completion methods at three moments along a semester. This study reveals contrasting results between the methods, which affected developers’ decisions and interpretations. With this work, we intend to draw the HCI community’s attention to the contrast between different UX evaluation methods and the impact of their outcomes in the software development process.
