Radio frequency plasma is one of the means to modify the polymer surface namely in the activation of polypropylene membranes (PPM) with O2 plasma. Activated membranes were deposited with TiO2 nanoparticles by the dip coating method and the bare sample and modified sample (PPM5-TiO2) were irradiated by UV lamps for 20–120 min. Characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Attenuated total reflection technique- Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and water contact angle (WCA) measurements were applied to study the alteration of ensuing membrane surface properties which shows the nanoparticles on the sample surface including the presence of Ti on PPM. The WCA decreased from 135° (PPM) to 90° (PPM5-TiO2) and after UV irradiation, the WCA of PPM5-TiO2 diminished from 90° to 40°.

ABSTRACTPhosphorylcholine glyceraldehyde (PCGA) was used as a phosphorylcholine (PC) group containing compound to graft onto the surface of polycarbonateurethane (PCU) film using 1,6-hexanediamine (HDA) or α,ω-diamino-poly(ethylene glycol) (APEG, Mn = 200) as a spacer, in order to introduce biomimetic structure onto the polymer surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis shows that PCGA has been covalently linked to the PCU surface. Water contact angle test suggests that the surface hydrophilicity has been improved after PCGA is grafted onto the surface of PCU film. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation of the modified PCU films after contacting with plasma-rich plasma demonstrates that platelets rarely adhere but a large number of platelets adhere to the original PCU surface. The hemocompatibility of the PC modified PCU film has been improved obviously after grafting with PCGA with PEG spacer.

Due to their unique physicochemical properties, polysilazanes exhibit excellent performance when combined with some resin matrixes, which had drawn great research attention. In this article, polyurethane (PU) was firstly prepared by polytetrahydrofuran glycol, isophorone diisocyanate, and 1,4-butanediol as main materials. Then, the prepared PU was blended with polysilazane by mixing the two solutions together, which was cured to films via dip-coating method at room temperature. The structure, thermal stability, and surface properties of the composite coatings were investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results demonstrated that after modification with polysilazane, the heat resistance, hydrophobicity, and mechanical property of the PU coatings were improved. When the content of polysilazane was 6 wt%, the mechanical property of the composite films was optimized, with a maximum tensile strength of 25.7 MPa and elongation at break of 797%. Meanwhile, the water contact angle of the composite film was 107° and the water absorption reached a minimum of 2.1%, which showed improved hydrophobicity and water resistance.

ABSTRACTChemical structures of native oxides formed during wet chemical treatments on NH4F treated Si(111) surfaces were investigated using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier Transformed Infrared Attenuated Total Reflection(FT-IR-ATR). It was found that the amounts of Si-H bonds in native oxides and those at native oxide/silicon interface are negligibly small in the case of native oxides formed in H2SO4-H2O2-H2O solution. Based on this discovery, it was confirmed that native oxides can be characterized by the amount of Si-H bonds in native oxides. Furthermore, it was found that the combination of various wet chemical treatments with the treatment in NH4OH-H2O2-H2O solution results in the drastic decrease in the amount of Si-H bonds in native oxides.

Abstract In this study, the easy-to-operate silver mirror reaction (SMR) was used for metallizing chromatography paper. The SMR-metallized paper was characterized by water contact angle measurements, a surface profiler, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electrical resistance measurement. The characterization results show that Ag was successfully synthesized on cellulose fibers and was electrically conductive after cyclic bending. Moreover, this SMR-metallized paper was used as electrodes for fabricating a supercapacitor. This SMR-metallized paper could be used for realizing cost-effective flexible electronics applied in on-site biochemical sensing in resource-limited settings.

Super-hydrophobic film with hierarchical micro/nano structures was prepared by galvanic replacement reaction process on the surface of galvanized steel. The effects of the etching time and copper nitrate concentration on the wetting property of the as-prepared surfaces were studied. Scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electrochemical technique were employed to characterize the surface morphology, chemical composition, and corrosion resistance. The stability and self-cleaning property of the as-fabricated super-hydrophobic film were also evaluated. The super-hydrophobic film can be obtained within 3 min and possesses a water contact angle of 164.3° ± 2°. Potentiodynamic polarization measurements indicated that the super-hydrophobic film greatly improved the corrosion resistance of the galvanized steel in 3.5 wt % NaCl aqueous solution. The highest inhibition efficiency was estimated to be 96.6%. The obtained super-hydrophobic film showed good stability and self-cleaning property.

In this study, We immobilized hydrogel material onto expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) film and used as an functional biomaterial. The material is a film containing titanium oxide onto polymer sheet. The hydrogel film is hydrophilic, bacterial inactivated and bio-compatible. In order to improve the ePTFE film biocompatibility, the cold plasma or γ-ray technology was used with acetic acid as monomer to deposit onto ePTFE film and then (N-isopropylacrylamide) was grafted onto the surface by radiation photo-grafting. The characteristics of the material surface were evaluated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), FTIR and water contact angle. It was found that the contact angle of water on the untreated ePTFE significantly decrease from125° to 72° after ePTFE film being treated with acetic acid plasma deposition procedure. Due to the hydrophilicity of poly (N-isopropylacrylamide), so the contact angle of water on the ePTFE-g-NIPAAm almost approached to 0°. This thermal sensitive ePTFE hydrogels can be applied to artificial guiding tube and wound dressing material.

In this study, we proposed a novel and facile method to modify the surface of TiO2 nanoparticles and investigated the influence of the surface-modified TiO2 nanoparticles as an additive in a polyurethane (PU) coating. The hyperbranched polymers (HBP) were grafted on the surface of TiO2 nanoparticles via the thiol-yne click chemistry to reduce the aggregation of nanoparticles and increase the interaction between TiO2 and polymer matrices. The grafting of HBP on the TiO2 nanoparticles surface was investigated by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). The thermal and mechanical properties of nanocomposite coatings containing various amounts of TiO2 nanoparticles were measured by dynamic mechanical thermal (DMTA) and tensile strength measurement. Moreover, the surface structure and properties of the newly prepared nanocomposite coatings were examined. The experimental results demonstrate that the incorporation of the surface-modified TiO2 nanoparticles can improve the mechanical and thermal properties of nanocomposite coatings. The results also reveal that the surface modification of TiO2 with the HBP chains improves the nanoparticle dispersion, and the coating surface shows a lotus leaf-like microstructure. Thus, the functional nanocomposite coatings exhibit superhydrophobic properties, good photocatalytic depollution performance, and high stripping resistance.

TiO2 nanoparticles containing 0.0, 1.0, 5.0, and 10.0 wt.% Mo were prepared by a reverse micelle template assisted sol–gel method allowing the dispersion of Mo atoms in the TiO2 matrix. Their textural and surface properties were characterized by means of X-ray powder diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms at −196 °C, energy dispersive X-ray analysis coupled to field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance UV–Vis spectroscopy, and ζ-potential measurement. The photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (under visible light and low irradiance) in water was used as a test reaction as well. The ensemble of the obtained experimental results was analyzed in order to discover the actual state of Mo in the final materials, showing the occurrence of both bulk doping and Mo surface species, with progressive segregation of MoOx species occurring only at a higher Mo content.

Few-layers graphene films (FLG) were grown by local solid phase epitaxy on a semi-insulating 6H-SiC substrate by annealing Ni films deposited on the Si and C-terminated faces of the SiC. The impact of the annealing process on the final quality of the FLG films is studied using Raman spectroscopy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to verify the presence of graphene on the sample surface. We also demonstrate that further device fabrication steps such as dielectric deposition can be carried out without compromising the FLG films integrity.
