Background: While physical activity has been reported to positively affect stress and sleep quality, less is known about the potential relationships among them. The present study aimed to investigate the mediating effect of stress on the association between physical activity and sleep quality in Chinese college students, after controlling for age, nationality, and tobacco and alcohol use. Participants: The sample comprised 6973 college students representing three Chinese universities. Methods: Physical activity, perceived stress, and sleep quality were respectively measured using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire—Short Form (IPAQ-SF), Perceived Stress Scale—10 Items (PSS-10), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Results: Mediating effects of perceived stress on the association between physical activity and sleep quality were observed in males and females, with 42.4% (partial mediating effect) and 306.3% (complete mediating effect) as percentages of mediation, respectively. Conclusion: The results of this study may provide some suggestions that physical activity could improve sleep by aiding individuals in coping with stress and indicate that stress management might be an effective non-pharmaceutical therapy for sleep improvement.

Background and Study Aim. A global pandemic affected by COVID-19 resulted in restrictions to daily routines, including recreation activities, social skills, and academic and health quality of college students. This study aimed to evaluate the psychophysiological effect of coronavirus quarantine on physical activity and its’ relationship between sleep quality, mood states and musculoskeletal pain in college students. Material and Methods. A total of 392 (male = 150; female = 242; age = 22.9±5.5) college students completed an online survey. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF), the Brunel Mood Scale, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the Visual Analogue Scale for musculoskeletal pain (MSP) were used in this study. Results. Total physical activity significantly correlation with PSQI (p < 0.05, r = -.103), fatigue (p < 0.01, r = -.344), depression (p < 0.01, r = -.258), angry (p < 0.01, r = -.210), vigour (p < 0.01, r = -.344), neck and shoulder, upper and lower back (p < 0.01, r = -.225), neck and shoulder correlation (p < 0.01, r = -.230), upper and lower back (p < 0.01, r = -.209). Furthermore, a positive correlation was shown between PSQI and negative moods and a negative correlation with positive mood. Conclusions. During quarantine, decreased physical activity was associated with higher negative mood states and poor sleep quality and more MSP. The COVID-19 quarantine has considerably affected mental health-related crisis consists of desperation, self-consciousness and deficiency of physical capabilities in young adults, especially in college students.

Perceived stress, Internet addiction and procrastination are common issues among college students. Based on the Compensatory Internet Use (CIU) model and emotion regulation theory, this study aims to explore two possible mechanisms for the connection between perceived stress and Internet addiction: mediating effect of procrastination and moderating effect of flow experience on the Internet. Cross-sectional design and questionnaire survey were used in this study. Data were collected from 446 college students who voluntarily completed self-reporting of perceived stress, internet addiction, procrastination and flow. Potential relationship structure and moderation model between variables was calculated during the process. The results revealed that there were significant associations among perceived stress, Internet addiction, procrastination and flow. The results also showed that procrastination plays a mediating role between perceptual stress and Internet addiction, flow plays a moderating role between them. The results emphasized the importance of the intention behind college students’ overuse of the Internet. These results also provided a perspective of finding the possible causes of Internet addiction in college students, that is, individuals use the Internet to avoid stress and procrastinate, and the mobile experience on the Internet also affects the process.

Considering the significance of resilience in coping with adversity, how to improve college students’ resilience is worthy of attention. Previous studies have revealed that physical activity can promote resilience; however, few studies examined the mediating factors between them. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of physical activity on resilience, as well as the mediating effects of competence need, autonomy need, and relatedness need between physical activity and resilience. The study involved 2375 college students (1110 males and 1265 females), with an average age of 20.25 years (SD = 2.04). Participants completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form, Basic Needs Satisfaction in General Scale, and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. Results showed that physical activity was positively associated with resilience, and the three basic needs played significant mediating roles between physical activity and resilience. The indirect effect of competence need was significantly greater than that of autonomy need and relatedness need. To conclude, physical activity plays an important role in resilience among college students, and the satisfaction of competence, autonomy, and relatedness needs mediates the relationship between physical activity and resilience, among which, competence need appears as the strongest mediator.

Abstract Objectives To determine the relationships between physical activity, sleep behaviors, and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms during the current COVID-19 pandemic in college students. Methods College students (n = 459; aged 18–23) at a midwestern university participated in the study. Participants completed an online survey in mid-April 2020, which included the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form and amended versions of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Gastrointestinal Symptoms Questionnaires. Spearman rho correlation coefficients were used to analyze the data. Results Higher GI mean total scores were significantly related to higher vigorous and moderate intensity physical activity total minutes for the overall sample (rs = 0.112, P &lt; 0.05); and for participants identifying as female (rs = 0.134, P &lt; 0.05). Higher GI mean total scores were significantly related to longer sleep duration for the overall sample (rs = 0.111, P &lt; 0.05) and for participants identifying as male (rs = 0.258, P &lt; 0.01). In males, longer sleep duration was also significantly related to a decrease in sleep quality (rs = –.226, P &lt; 0.05). Conclusions The findings reveal a positive correlation between GI symptoms and vigorous and moderate-intensity activity. Moreover, GI symptoms were related to longer duration but decreased quality of sleep. Healthcare professionals and college campus resources could focus on promoting lower intensity exercise and improved sleep behaviors to decrease GI symptoms. Background: Academic procrastination (AP) has been a common problematic behavior in college students. While physical activity (PA) has been reported to increase self-efficacy and reduce AP, less is known about the potential relationships among them. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the mediating effect of self-efficacy on the relationship between PA and AP. Methods: 687 Chinese college students (51% males, 49% females) aged 17–23 years (M = 19.59, SD = 0.89) participated in the study. PA, self-efficacy, and AP were assessed using the Physical Activity Rating Scale-3 (PARS-3), the Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Procrastination Assessment Scale-Students (PASS), respectively. Pearson correlation analysis, linear regression analysis, and mediation analysis were used to analyze the data. Results: (1) PA has a significant and negative impact on college students’ AP, (2) PA has a significant and positive impact on college students’ self-efficacy; (3) self-efficacy has a significant and negative impact on AP in college students; and (4) self-efficacy significantly mediates the relationship between PA and AP. Conclusions: PA is an effective intervention for directly and indirectly decreasing college students’ AP. Therefore, more intervention efforts should focus on the promotion of PA in higher education to improve students’ self-efficacy and thus, to reduce AP among college students.

Nowadays, short-form video applications have become increasingly popular due to their strong appeal to people, especially among college students. With this trend, the phenomenon of short-form video application addiction (SVA) also become prominent, which is a great risk for individuals’ health and adaptation. Against this background, the present study aimed to examine the association between perceived stress and SVA addiction, as well as its mechanism—the mediating role of self-compensation motivation (SCM) and the moderating role of shyness. A total of 896 Chinese college students was recruited to complete a set of questionnaires on perceived stress (PS), SCM, shyness, and short-form video applications. The results show that PS was positively associated with SVA, and SCM partially mediated this association. In addition, both the direct association between PS and SVA and the indirect effect of SCM were moderated by shyness and were stronger for individuals with higher levels of shyness. The results could not only deepen our understanding of the underlying factors of SVA but also provide suggestions for relevant prevention and intervention procedures.
