scholarly journals Beyond Commuting: Ignoring Individuals’ Activity-Travel Patterns May Lead to Inaccurate Assessments of Their Exposure to Traffic Congestion

This research examines whether individual exposures to traffic congestion are significantly different between assessments obtained with and without considering individuals’ activity-travel patterns in addition to commuting trips. We used crowdsourced real-time traffic congestion data and the activity-travel data of 250 individuals in Los Angeles to compare these two assessments of individual exposures to traffic congestion. The results revealed that individual exposures to traffic congestion are significantly underestimated when their activity-travel patterns are ignored, which has been postulated as a manifestation of the uncertain geographic context problem (UGCoP). The results also highlighted that the probability distribution function of exposures is heavily skewed but tends to converge to its average when individuals’ activity-travel patterns are considered when compared to one obtained when those patterns are not considered, which indicates the existence of the neighborhood effect averaging problem (NEAP). Lastly, space-time visualizations of individual exposures illustrated that people’s exposures to traffic congestion vary significantly even if they live at the same residential location due to their idiosyncratic activity-travel patterns. The results corroborate the claims in previous studies that using data aggregated over areas (e.g., census tracts) or focusing only on commuting trips (and thus ignoring individuals’ activity-travel patterns) may lead to erroneous assessments of individual exposures to traffic congestion or other environmental influences.

Urban scholars increasingly contend that local police departments play a central role in facilitating neighbourhood change. Recent critics warn that ‘order maintenance’ policing and other low-level law enforcement tactics are deployed in gentrifying areas to displace ‘disorderly’ populations. Despite influential qualitative case studies, there remains scant quantitative research testing this relationship, and few studies that evaluate the link between policing, displacement and gentrification. We address this lacuna, drawing on new citation data from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and employing a measure of neighbourhood change that focuses on the displacement of low-income residents. Examining policing patterns in 978 US Census tracts in Los Angeles over four years, our analysis reveals that tracts experiencing gentrification – defined as the simultaneous increase in non-poor residents and decrease in the number of people in poverty – experience a greater number of citations compared with other tract types. Similar patterns emerge in our analysis of citations that explicitly target homelessness and extreme poverty. In post-hoc analyses, we found that Census tracts characterised by a decrease in the number of people in poverty experienced greater numbers of total police citations and of citations targeting homeless individuals, compared with other tract types. These findings carry important theoretical implications for understanding the divergent manifestations of, and potential mechanisms driving, order maintenance policing. Methodologically, we contend that police citations provide a more precise measure of order maintenance policing compared with previous studies, and that classifying neighbourhoods in terms of relative displacement of residents in poverty provides much-needed interpretive clarity.

A methodology and its application to measure total, recurrent, and nonrecurrent (incident related) delay on urban freeways are described. The methodology used data from loop detectors and calculated the average and the probability distribution of delays. Application of the methodology to two real-life freeway corridors in Los Angeles, California, and one in the San Francisco, California, Bay Area, indicated that reliable measurement of congestion also should provide measures of uncertainty in congestion. In the three applications, incident-related delay was found to be 13% to 30% of the total congestion delay during peak periods. The methodology also quantified the congestion impacts on travel time and travel time variability.

<p>Pertumbuhan jumlah kendaraan yang semakin meningkat setiap tahunnya mengakibatkan volume kendaraan yang melintasi ruas jalan semakin padat yang kerap mengakibatkan kemacetan lalu lintas. Kemacetan lalu lintas dapat menjadi beban biaya yang signifikan terhadap kegiatan ekonomi masyarakat. Informasi lalu lintas yang dinamis seperti informasi kondisi lalu lintas secara langsung <em>(real time)</em> akan membantu mempengaruhi aktivitas masyarakat pengguna lalu lintas untuk melakukan perencanaan dan penjadwalan aktivitas yang lebih baik. Penelitian ini mengusulkan model pengamatan kondisi lalu lintas berbasis data GPS pada <em>smartphone</em>, untuk informasi kondisi lalu lintas secara langsung. GPS <em>Receiver</em> pada <em>smartphone</em> menghasilkan data lokasi secara instan dan bersifat mobile sehingga dapat digunakan untuk pengambilan data kecepatan kendaraan secara langsung. Kecepatan kendaraan diperoleh berdasarkan jarak perpindahan koordinat kendaraan dalam satuan detik selanjutnya di konversi menjadi satuan kecepatan (km/jam) kemudian data kecepatan kendaraan di proses menjadi informasi kondisi lalu lintas. Secara menyeluruh model pengamatan berfokus pada tiga tahapan, yaitu akuisisi data kecepatan kendaraan berbasis GPS pada <em>smartphone</em>, pengiriman data kecepatan dan visualisasi kondisi lalu lintas berbasis GIS. Pengujian dilakukan pada ruas jalan kota Denpasar telah mampu mendapatkan data kecepatan kendaraan dan mampu menunjukkan kondisi lalu lintas secara langsung dengan empat kategori keadaan lalu lintas yaitu garis berwarna hitam menunjukkan lalu lintas macet dengan kecepatan kendaraan kurang dari 17 km/jam, merah menunjukkan padat dengan kecepatan kendaraan 17 km/jam sampai 27 km/jam, kuning menunjukkan sedang dengan kecepatan kendaraan 26 km/jam sampai 40 km/jam dan hijau menunjukkan lancar dengan kecepatan kendaraan diatas 40 km/jam.</p><p> </p><p><em><strong>Abstract</strong></em></p><p class="Abstract"><em>The growth in the number of vehicles that is increasing every year has resulted in the volume of vehicles crossing the road increasingly congested which often results in traffic congestion. Traffic congestion can be a significant cost burden on economic activities. Dynamic traffic information such as information on real time traffic conditions will help influence the activities of the traffic user community to better plan and schedule activities. This study proposes a traffic condition observation model based on GPS data on smartphones, for information on real time traffic conditions. The GPS Receiver on the smartphone produces location and coordinate data instantly and is mobile so that it can be used for direct vehicle speed data retrieval. Vehicle speed is obtained based on the displacement distance of the vehicle's coordinates in units of seconds and then converted into units of speed (km / h), the vehicle speed data is then processed into information on traffic conditions. Overall, the observation model focuses on three stages, namely GPS-based vehicle speed data acquisition on smartphones, speed data delivery and visualization of GIS-based traffic conditions. Tests carried out on the Denpasar city road segment have been able to obtain vehicle speed data and are able to show traffic conditions directly with four categories of traffic conditions, namely black lines indicating traffic jammed with vehicle speeds of less than 17 km / h, red indicates heavy with speed vehicles 17 to 27 km / h, yellow indicates medium speed with vehicles 26 km/h to 40 km / h and green shows fluent with vehicle speeds above 40 km / h.</em></p><p><em><strong><br /></strong></em></p>

In recent years, traffic congestion prediction has led to a growing research area, especially of machine learning of artificial intelligence (AI). With the introduction of big data by stationary sensors or probe vehicle data and the development of new AI models in the last few decades, this research area has expanded extensively. Traffic congestion prediction, especially short-term traffic congestion prediction is made by evaluating different traffic parameters. Most of the researches focus on historical data in forecasting traffic congestion. However, a few articles made real-time traffic congestion prediction. This paper systematically summarises the existing research conducted by applying the various methodologies of AI, notably different machine learning models. The paper accumulates the models under respective branches of AI, and the strength and weaknesses of the models are summarised.

With the rapid expansion of sensor technologies and wireless network infrastructure, research and development of traffic associated applications, such as real-time traffic maps, on-demand travel route reference and traffic forecasting are gaining much more attention than ever before. In this paper, we elaborate on our traffic prediction application, which is based on traffic data collected through Google Map API. Our application is a desktop-based application that predicts traffic congestion state using Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA). In addition to ETA, the prediction system takes into account various features such as weather, time period, special conditions, holidays, etc. The label of the classifier is identified as one of the five traffic states i.e. smooth, slightly congested, congested, highly congested or blockage. The results demonstrate that the random forest classification algorithm has the highest prediction accuracy of 92 percent followed by XGBoost and KNN respectively.
