A turbulent Couette flow over a wavy surface is subject to a detailed parametric study in which three parameters—Aspect Ratio, Wave Slope and Reynolds number—are independently varied over an order of magnitude to investigate their influence on the flow. Stdk−ε turbulence model with enhanced wall functions is used to simulate all cases in the study and the results are validated against experimental data as well as analytical theories pertaining to flow over wavy surfaces. Gross flow properties such as mean velocity profiles, mass flow rate, shear stress and pressure on the walls, as well as turbulent flow characteristics such as inner-wall coordinates, log-law fit, eddy viscosity profiles and turbulence kinetic energy across the domain, are presented and their corroboration with existing literature is discussed. The effect of the three parameters on the flow variables is investigated. It is observed that while all response flow variables scale monotonically with a progressive change in the parameters, there are certain flow characteristics that can be ascribed exclusively to one of the three parameters. The study also discusses the influence of the top plate, a much-needed discussion that seems to be absent in most literature pertaining to Couette flow in wavy channels.

Transition characteristics of a boundary layer on a NACA0012 airfoil are investigated by measuring unsteady velocity using hot wire anemometry. The airfoil is installed in the incoming wake generated by an airfoil aligned in tandem with zero angle of attack. Reynolds number based on the airfoil chord varies from 2.0×105 to 6.0×105; distance between two airfoils varies from 0.25 to 1.0 of the chord length. To measure skin friction coefficient identifying the transition onset and completion, an extended wall law is devised to accommodate transitional flows with pressure gradient and nonuniform inflows. Variations of the skin friction are quite similar to that of the flat plate boundary layer in the uniform turbulent inflow of high intensity. Measured velocity profiles are coincident with families generated by the modified wall law in the range up to y+=40. Turbulence intensity of the incoming wake shifts the onset location of transition upstream. The transitional region becomes longer as the airfoils approach one another and the Reynolds number increases. The mean velocity profile gradually varies from a laminar to logarithmic one during the transition. The maximum values of rms velocity fluctuations are located near y+=15-20. A strong positive skewness of velocity fluctuation is observed at the onset of transition and the overall rms level of velocity fluctuation reaches 3.0–3.5 in wall units. The temporal evolution of small three-dimensional disturbances on viscous flows between parallel walls is studied. The initial-value problem is formally solved by using Fourier–Laplace transform techniques. The streamwise velocity component is obtained as the solution of a forced problem. As a consequence of the three-dimensionality, a resonant response is possible, leading to algebraic growth for small times. It occurs when the eigenvalues of the Orr–Sommerfeld equation coincide with the eigenvalues of the homogeneous operator for the streamwise velocity component. The resonance has been investigated numerically for plane Couette flow. The phase speed of the resonant waves equals the average mean velocity. The wavenumber combination that leads to the largest amplitude corresponds to structures highly elongated in the streamwise direction. The maximum amplitude, and the time to reach this maximum, scale with the Reynolds number. The aspect ratio of the most rapidly growing wave increases with the Reynolds number, with its spanwise wavelength approaching a constant value of about 3 channel heights.

AbstractTorque measurements in Taylor–Couette flow, with large radius ratio and large aspect ratio, over a range of velocities up to a Reynolds number of 24 000 are presented. Following a specific procedure, nine states with distinct numbers of vortices along the axis were found and the aspect ratios of the vortices were measured. The relationship between the speed and the torque for a given number of vortices is reported. In the turbulent Taylor vortex flow regime, at relatively high Reynolds number, a change in behaviour is observed corresponding to intersections of the torque–speed curves for different states. Before each intersection, the torque for a state with a larger number of vortices is higher. After each intersection, the torque for a state with a larger number of vortices is lower. The exponent, from the scaling laws of the torque, always depends on the aspect ratio of the vortices. When the Reynolds number is rescaled using the mean aspect ratio of the vortices, only a partial collapse of the exponent data is found.

We conducted systematic numerical investigations of the flow characteristics within the entrance region of rectangular microchannels. The effects of the geometrical aspect ratio and roughness on entrance lengths were analyzed. The incompressible laminar Navier–Stokes equations were solved using finite volume method (FVM). In the simulation, hydraulic diameters ( D h ) ranging from 50 to 200 µm were studied, and aspect ratios of 1, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75, and 2 were considered as well. The working fluid was set as water, and the Reynolds number ranged from 0.5 to 100. The results showed a good agreement with the conducted experiment. Correlations are proposed to predict the entrance lengths of microchannels with respect to different aspect ratios. Compared with other correlations, these new correlations are more reliable because a more practical inlet condition was considered in our investigations. Instead of considering the influence of the width and height of the microchannels, in our investigation we proved that the critical role is played by the aspect ratio, representing the combination of the aforementioned parameters. Furthermore, the existence of rough elements obviously shortens the entrance region, and this effect became more pronounced with increasing relative roughness and Reynolds number. A similar effect could be seen by shortening the roughness spacing. An asymmetric distribution of rough elements decreased the entrance length compared with a symmetric distribution, which can be extrapolated to other irregularly distributed forms.

The objective of this study is to expound on the deliverables of a steady-state RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes) simulation in one of the simplest flows, Couette flow, at a very high Reynolds number. To that end, a process to perform better grid sensitivity testing is introduced. Three two-equation turbulence models ( , , and ) are compared against each other as well as pitted against formal literature on the subject and core flow velocities, slopes, wall-bounded velocities, shear stresses and kinetic energies are analyzed.  applied with enhanced wall functions is consistently found to be in better agreement with previous studies. Finally, plane turbulent Couette flow at  51,099, the range at which it has not been studied experimentally, numerically or analytically in former studies, is simulated. The results are found to be consistent with the trends asserted by literature and preliminary computations of this study.

A study of flow in two stationary models of two-pass internal coolant passages is presented, which focuses on the flow characteristics in the 180-deg bend region, and downstream of the bend, where the flow is redeveloping. A stereoscopic digital PIV system measured all three velocity components simultaneously to obtain mean velocity, and turbulence quantities of the flow field. The coolant passage model consisted of two square passages, each having a 20 hydraulic diameter length, separated by a rounded-tip web of 0.2 passage widths, and connected by a sharp 180-deg bend with a rectangular outer wall. Ribs were mounted on the bottom and top walls of both legs, with a staggered arrangement, and at 45 deg to the flow. The rib height and spacing were 0.1 and 1.0 passage heights, respectively. The measurements were obtained for a flow condition, with a Reynolds number of 50,000. The geometries are similar in both sections except for one, which is equipped with extraction holes to simulate holes for film cooling. Two series of holes are placed solely in the bottom wall, four holes are located in the bend, and 12 in the downstream leg. The global extraction through the holes was set to 50% of the inlet massflow. This paper presents new measurements of the flow in the straight legs, as well as in the bend of the passage equipped with holes, detailed comparison of the flow upstream, inside and downstream of the bend region between both configurations, and the effects of extraction inside the cooling channels.

An experimental study is carried out to investigate the effects of microglass fiber suspensions in the non-Newtonian fluids in a gap between an inner rotating sphere and an outer whole stationary sphere. In the experiments, the microglass fibers with different aspect ratios are mixed with a macromolecule polymeric fluid to obtain different suspension fluids. For comparison, a Newtonian fluid and the non-Newtonian polymeric fluid are also studied. The stationary torques of the inner sphere that the test fluids acted on are measured under conditions of various concentric spherical gaps and rotational Reynolds numbers. It is found that the polymeric fluid could be governed by the Couette flow at a gap ratio of less than 0.42 and the Reynolds number of less than 100, while the fiber-suspended polymeric fluids could expand the Couette flow region more than the Reynolds number of 100 at the same gap ratios.

Turbulence measurements under the influence of a transverse magnetic field have been made at Purdue University's Magneto-Fluid-Mechanic Laboratory in a high aspect ratio channel. The Reynolds number range covered was 25000 ≤ Re 282000; the geometry and experimental conditions were such that the experiment approximated turbulent Hartmann flow. The aspect ratio of the channel was 5·8:1, its walls were electrically insulated and the working fluid was mercury. Measurements in the presence of a magnetic field were made of the skin friction coefficient, the mean velocity profiles, the turbulence intensity profiles (both u’ and v’) and the Reynolds stress profiles.A sudden change in the damping of the Reynolds stresses was manifested by a ‘hump’ in the curves of Cf versus M/Re taken with the Reynolds number held constant. This ‘hump’ occurs as a gentle rise and sudden drop to the Hartmann laminar line of the Cf data. Close examination of the $\overline{u^{\prime}v^{\prime}}$ data near the wall confirms this behaviour, indicating that the turbulent contribution to the shear stress is the controlling factor in this behaviour of Cf. The Reynolds stresses were completely suppressed to zero at high values of the magnetic field, though the turbulence intensities of u’ and v’ were not. The Reynolds stress data are fundamental in revealing the mechanisms which are at work during the suppression of turbulence by a magnetic field.It was also found that at high magnetic fields, when most of the turbulence was damped, the skin friction coefficient fell below the values predicted by Hartmann's (1937) laminar solution for high values of M/Re. This result was linked to the presence of ‘M-shaped’ velocity profiles in the direction perpendicular to both the magnetic field and the mean velocity vector. The presence of ‘M-shaped’ profiles has not previously been linked to a reduction in Cf.

ABSTRACTThe flow and heat transfer characteristics over a single dimple and an array of staggered dimples have been investigated using the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach. The objective is to determine how reliably RANS models can predict this type of complex cooling flows. Three classes of low-Reynolds number RANS models have been employed to represent the turbulence. These included a linear Eddy Viscosity Model (EVM), a Non-Linear Model (NLEVM) and a Reynolds Stress transport Model (RSM). Variants of the k-ε model have been used to represent the first two categories. Steady and time-dependent simulations have been carried out at a bulk Reynolds number of around 5,000 with dimple print diameter to channel height ratios of D/H = 1.0, 2.0 and ratios of dimple depth to channel height of δ/H = 0.2, 0.4. The linear EVM and the RSM tested both produce symmetric circulations in the dimples, while the NLEVM produces an asymmetric pattern. The mean velocity profiles predicted numerically are generally in good agreement with the data. The main flow characteristics are reproduced by the RANS models, but some predictive deviations from available data point to the need for further investigations. All models report an overall enhancement in heat transfer levels when using dimples in comparison to those of a plane channel.

In this work, numerical simulations are performed in order to study the effects of aspect ratio (AR) and Reynolds number (Re) on flow characteristics of three side-by-side rectangular cylinders for fixed spacing ratio ( g ), using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). The Reynolds number varies within the range 60 ≤ Re ≤ 180, aspect ratio is between 0.25 and 4, and spacing ratio is fixed at g  = 1.5. The flow structure mechanism behind the cylinders is analyzed in terms of vorticity contour visualization, time-trace analysis of drag and lift coefficients, power spectrum analysis of lift coefficient and variations of mean drag coefficient, and Strouhal number. For different combinations of AR and Re, the flow is characterized into regular, irregular, and symmetric vortex shedding. In regular and symmetric vortex shedding the drag and lift coefficients vary smoothly while reverse trend occurs in irregular vortex shedding. At small AR, each cylinder experiences higher magnitude drag force as compared to intermediate and large aspect ratios. The vortex shedding frequency was found to be smaller at smaller AR and increased with increment in AR.
