Broad-leaved evergreen trees create urban forests for mitigation of climate warming and adsorption of particulate matter (PM). This study was performed to identify the species suitable for urban greening by examining the adsorption capacity of the evergreen species in urban areas in Korea, the adsorption points and the elemental composition of PM in the adsorbed tree. Leaf sampling was carried out four times (period of seven months from October 2017 to May 2018) and used after drying (period 28 to 37 days). Particulate matter (PM) was classified and measured according to size PM2.5 (0.2–2.5 μm), PM10 (2.5–10 μm), PM100 (10–100 μm). The total amount of PM adsorbed on the leaf surface was highest in Pinus densiflora (24.6 μg∙cm−2), followed by Quercus salicina (47.4 μg∙cm−2). The composition of PM adsorbed by P. densiflora is 4.0% PM2.5, 39.5% PM10 and 56.5% PM100, while those adsorbed by Q. salicina are evergreen at 25.7% PM2.5, 27.4% PM10 and 46.9% PM100. When the amount of PM adsorbed on the leaf was calculated by LAI, the species that adsorbed PM the most was P. densiflora, followed by Q. salicina, followed by Q. salicina in the wax layer, then P. densiflora. As a result of this study, the amount of PM adsorbed per unit area of leaves, and the amount of PM calculated by LAI, showed a simpler pattern. The hardwoods had a high adsorption rate of PM2.5. The adsorption ratio of ultra-fine PM2.5 by evergreen broad-leaved trees was greater than that of coniferous trees. Therefore, broad-leaved evergreens such as Q. salicina are considered very suitable as species for adsorbing PM in the city. PM2.5 has been shown to be adsorbed through the pores and leaves of trees, indicating that the plant plays an important role in alleviating PM in the atmosphere. As a result of analyzing the elemental components of PM accumulated on leaf leaves by scanning electron microscopy (SEM)/ energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) analysis, it was composed of O, C, Si, and N, and was found to be mainly generated by human activities around the road. The results of this study provide basic data regarding the selection of evergreen species that can effectively remove aerial PM. It also highlights the importance of evergreen plants for managing PM pollution during the winter and provides insights into planning additional green infrastructure to improve urban air quality.

City-scale urban greening is expanding wildlife habitat in previously less hospitable urban areas. Does this transformation also prompt a reckoning with the longstanding idea that cities are places intended to satisfy primarily human needs? I pose this question in the context of one of North America's most ambitious green infrastructure programmes to manage urban runoff: Philadelphia's Green City, Clean Waters. Given that the city's green infrastructure plans have little to say about wildlife, I investigate how wild animals fit into urban greening professionals' conceptions of the urban. I argue that practitioners relate to urban wildlife via three distinctive frames: 1) animal control, 2) public health and 3) biodiversity, and explore the implications of each for peaceful human-wildlife coexistence in 'greened' cities.

Planning green infrastructure in the cities is a challenging task for planners and city managers. Developing multifunctional green space systems provide many benefits including: increasing water retention, mitigating urban heat island effect, microclimate regulation, reducing air, water and noise pollution and conservation biodiversity. The greenery in the city also have an impact on human health. The paper presents the possibilities of using LiDAR data mapping vegetation density in urban areas on the example of Gorzów Wielkopolski (Poland). Maps made as a result of processing the point clouds obtained from airborne laser scanning represents the most accurate, comprehensive and detailed assessment of Gorzów Wielkopolski vegetation cover to date and establishes the baseline for greenery governance and planning of green infrastructure in the city.

Anthropogenic land use has led to the loss and fragmentation of native habitats and disruption to ecosystem processes, resulting in a decline in landscape connectivity and biodiversity. Here, in order to find the potentials of improvements in ecological connectivity, we provide a spatial analysis to present differences in ecological connectivity based on land cover maps and urban habitat maps in Suwon city, Republic of Korea. We generated two permeability maps for use in a network analysis, one being land cover and the other urban habitat, including a 5-km buffer area from the city boundary. We then determined the current-flow betweenness centrality (CFBC) for each map. Our results indicate that forests are typically the most highly connected areas in both maps. However, in the land cover map results, nearly all high-priority areas were in the mountainous region (CFBC value: 0.0100 ± 0.0028), but the urban habitat indicated that grasslands and rivers within the city also significantly contribute to connectivity (CFBC value: 0.0071 ± 0.0022). The CFBC maps developed here could be used as a reference when introducing green infrastructure in cities. Before establishing ecological networks for urban areas, future work should integrate the land use and ecological data of different administrative districts with continuous ecological connection.

Today, there is such a significant anthropogenic impact on nature all over the world that natural compensatory processes can not to deal with its harmful effects, especially in urban areas. Therefore, it is necessary to solve the current issues of urboecology and urban greening. Lawn is a multifunctional plant formation, an integral elements of urban landscapes, the basis of compositional solutions for urban greening and the main buffer element in the city. The lawn is the most important element of landscaping in any type of greenery, which plays a sanitary role. The analysis of the state of multifunctional lawns in cities and the development its ecological and biological standards for creating stable sward in urban areas is relevant. The authors present the results of the assessment of decorative effect and quality of the structure of lawn coverings for different functional purpose in the city Brovary. We chose on the territory of Brovary different lawns for multifunctional purpose: park “Peremoha”, park named after T.G. Shevchenko, park “Sosnovyi”, cemetery “Stare”, school territory № 9, boulevard “Nezalezhnosti”, stadium “Spartak”, stadium near school № 7, stadium of Brovary Higher School of Physical Culture. Determination of turf grass and weed vegetation we carried out in accordance with the “Determinant of higher plants of Ukraine” (1987). The actual weed-infested determined by the survey method and evaluated in points. For the Latin names of plants, we use The Plant List. The assessment of lawn decorative effect (general decorativeness) carried out with the 5-point scale (Laptev, 1983). We analyzed the quality of the structure of the lawn culture phytocenosis with 6-point scale of Laptev, which consists from the number of units of shoots per area of 100 cm2. Thus, we can group the experimental lawn coverings by qualitative characteristics of the state, where 5 objects from 9 experimental (park “Sosnovyi”, cemetery “Stare”, school territory № 9, boulevard “Nezalezhnosti”, stadium of Brovary Higher School of Physical Culture) evaluated in the lowest indicators and need a complete renovation. On the territory of the cemetery “Stare” lawn we found the largest number of weed species and we noted such species as: Taraxacum officinale (L.) Weber ex FH Wigg., Plantago major L., Galinsoga parviflora Cav., Capsella bursa-pastoris L. Medik., Elytrigia repens L. (Nevski), Poa annua L., Chenopodium album L., Amaranthus retroflexus L., Fallopia convolvulus (L.) Á.Löve. Indicators of the general decorativeness of lawns in the park “Peremoha” and the stadium near the school № 7 were the same, but the results of quality analysis of the structure of lawn indicate low shoot-forming ability of turf grasses, which is essential indicator for sport lawns for formation of a resistant turf to various types of loading. The lawns on the territory of park “Peremoha”, stadium “Spartak” and stadium near school № 7 characterized by good and mediocre quality of sward and require such agronomic operations as aeration, grounding and fertilization. Sport lawns in the city Brovary characterized by high indicators of weed-infested (3 points) that in turn influences both on decorative effect and complex estimation indicators of a lawn covering. It should also be noted that the frequency of fertilization for sports lawns is higher than for other types. The research results show that the lawn on the territory boulevard “Nezalezhnosti” estimated in 3 points by general decorativeness, because the projective cover was mosaic-group (Laptev, 1983) and 2 points – the quality of the structure of the lawn. In our opinion, such low rates are probably caused by anthropogenic load, as the research object located right next to the highway, but studies of this nature need to be continued. According to the results, it is established that the condition of the lawns in Brovary for different functional purpose differs greatly in quality indicators (Laptev, 1983): sports – mediocre condition, decorative – satisfactory (except for the park “Sosnovyi”), special purpose – unsatisfactory condition. The authors propose agro-technical operations to improve the quality and decorative effect of lawns in the city. However, areas of lawn coverings with "bad" grass quality indicators require restoration.

Urban air quality is continuing to deteriorate. If we want to do something about this problem, we need to know the cause of the pollution. The big problem, not only in Europe, is the high concentrations of particulate matter (PM) in the urban environment. The origin of these particles can be different, including combustion, transport, industry, natural resources, etc. Particulate matter includes a large amount of the finest PM fractions, which can remain in the air for a long time, easily enter respiratory tracks, and damage human health. Particulate matter is also produced by the abrasion of different parts of roads and vehicle fleets and from resuspension road dust, which concerns matter with larger aerodynamic diameters. For this reason, we carried out a series of measurements at various measuring stations in Žilina, Slovakia, during different measuring seasons. The main objective was to find out the diversity of particulate matter sources in Žilina. The search for the particulate matter origin was carried out by particulate matter measurements, determination of the particulate matter fraction concentrations (PM10, PM2.5, and PM1), an investigation on the effect of secondary factors on the particulate matter concentrations, chemical analyses, and multivariate statistical analyses. Varied behavior of the particulate matter with respect to the measurement station and the measurement season was found. Differences in the concentrations of investigated chemical elements contained in the PM were found. Significant changes in the concentrations of particulate matter are caused not only by primary sources (e.g., road traffic in the city of Žilina), but mainly by the negative events (combination of air pollution sources and meteorological conditions). Maximum concentrations of particulate matter PM10 were measured during the winter season at the measuring station on Komenského Street: PM10 126.2 µg/m3, PM2.5 97.7 µg/m3, and PM1 90.4 µg/m3 were obtained using the gravimetric method. The coarse fraction PM2.5-10 was mainly represented by the chemical elements Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Cr, Fe, and Ba, and the fine fraction PM2.5 was represented by the chemical elements K, S, Cd, Pb, Ni, and Zn. Road transport as a dominant source of PM10 was identified from all measurements in the city of Žilina by using the multivariate statistical methods of principal component analysis (PCA) and factor analysis (FA).

Optimization of the recreational potential of the green zone of urban areas affects the aesthetics and ecology of space, the logistics of holiday flows on the basis of a well-thought-out transport network. In the development of urban planning plans in Saratov in the 30-80-ies of the twentieth century, green spaces were given a prominent place in the city's complex. Green massifs of a particular functional purpose are an organic part of the city, both within the boundaries of the building and beyond. Socio-economic changes in the country were making adjustments to the use of green area objects, incl. forests and forest park "Kumysnaya Polyana". The aim is to assess the recreational potential of the green zone of Saratov and to develop ways to optimize it using the example of the forest park Kumysnaya Polyana. A lack of areas within the green zone intended for recreation has been identified. The estimation of recreational potential of forest park "Kumysnaya Polyana" is given taking into account the existing functional division of its territory. Models of the dynamics of recreational loads in functional zones are obtained. The recreation potential of the territory of the forest park "Kumysnaya Polyana" ranges from 65% to 84.38% of the maximum values. The existing functional zoning does not fully guarantee the preservation of indigenous types of plantations and landscapes and at the same time does not provide the maximum recreational capacity. Revealing the specificity of optimization of recreational capacity shows that changing the boundaries of functional zones, carrying out works on improvement and expansion of the road-tropic network will enable to increase the potential recreational capacity to 117.4 thousand people. Measures are proposed to increase the recreational capacity of the green zone and its resistance to high recreational loads. It is recommended to carry out sanitary and landscape cutting of the tree stand, develop a network of footpaths, bicycles, improve the level of landscaping, using methods and techniques of landscape design and make changes in the functional zoning of the forest park Kumysnaya Polyana. The validity and reliability of the research results is provided and subject to comprehensive research using computer processing of the data obtained.

Container gardens are used in cities around the world where access to soil at ground level is limited. They represent artificial ecosystems but often provide the only vegetation in some highly urbanized locations, and have been used in vertical and horizontal forms of living architecture. Although there are many container gardens in urban areas, container gardening as a component of more broadly considered green infrastructure seems to be unappreciated. The aim of this review is to elucidate potential ecosystem services provided by container gardening. The ultimate goal of this review is to recognize the value of container gardens in order to promote them as part of green infrastructure in urban areas. The ecosystem services which container gardens provide were sorted into the following categories (1) Provisioning (food production and security); (2) Regulating (stormwater management, improvement of air quality, energy savings and thermal comfort); (3) Habitat/Supporting (plant biodiversity and creation of animal habitats); (4) Cultural (aesthetic and improvement of visible green ratio, communication and environmental education, material reuse). Container gardens deserve serious attention as a form of urban greening that can provide many direct and indirect benefits to people living in cities. Moreover, it is important for citizens, local authorities and academics to be aware of the ecosystem services associated with container gardening to promote further development of its potential.

Species composition, quantity participation and spreading of ornamental bushes in current system of Novosibirsk green areas are determined. Upper zone (“Verkhnyaya zona”) of Academgorodok is not taken into research as far as it is a cultural heritage site and a significant site of landscape architecture of the 20th century. Special attention is given to participation of lilac species and cultivars (Syringa vulgaris L., Syringa amurensis Rupr., Syringa josikaea J. Jacq. ex Rchb.). It is pointed out that 62 species of bushes are used in the city, including 3 species of lilac, however their quantity participation is not enough and does not satisfy regulatory limits. Twenty six cultivars from the collection Syringa vulgaris L. of the Central Siberian Botanical Garden SB RAS are recommended additionally. Three cultivars, ‘Nadezhda’, ‘Pamyat’ o S. M. Kirove’ and ‘Olimpiada Kolesnikova’, successfully tested in urban environment are highly recommended. Besides, it is recommended to use wider Syringa amurensis Rupr., and to introduce late-flowering Preston hybrids (Syringa x prestoniae Mc. Kelvey (S. reflexa x S. villosa)), curretly absent in green urban areas, in urban greening in Siberia.
