The behavior of reinforced concrete beams containing fibers made of waste plastic straws (WPSs) under the three point bending test is examined. The effect of WPS fiber addition on the compressive and split tensile strength is reported. Four concrete mixes were prepared. The control mix PS-0 had a proportion of 1 cement: 1 sand: 2 coarse aggregate and a water cement ratio of 0.4. In the other three mixes PS-0.5, PS-1.5 and PS-3, 0%, 0.5%, 1.5% and 3% of WPS fiber (by volume) was added respectively. The results show that at 0.5% WPS, there is slight increase in compressive strength. However, beyond 0.5% addition, a decrease in compressive strength is observed. The split tensile strength shows a systematic increase with the addition of WPS fibers. The reinforced concrete beams containing WPS fibers show higher ductility as demonstrated by the larger ultimate tensile strain and ductility index (Δu/Δy). There is a tendency to have more fine cracks with the presence of WPS fibers.

The present Investigation is aimed at utilizing low cost material Dolomite powder and waste material Quarry dust as partial replacement of cement and sand in concrete. This experimental investigation is carried out in three stages. In 1st stage M25 grade of concrete is produced by replacing cement by 0%, 6%, 12% and 18% of Dolomite Powder. In 2nd Stage concrete is produced by keeping the optimum 12% of dolomite powder as constant and sand is replaced by quarry dust in the percentage of 0%, 25%, 35% and 45%. In 3rd stage the optimum percentage of Dolomite Powder and Quarry Dust (DP+QD) Concrete are used to determine the compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength of concrete and to check the flexural behavior of RCC beams. It is found that the concrete made of low cost material dolomite powder and waste material quarry dust increases the compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength of concrete when compared to that of normal concrete. It also concluded that the first crack load and ultimate load of dolomite powder and quarry dust reinforced concrete beams increases when compared with normal reinforced concrete beams. From study it is concluded that the low cost material Dolomite powder & Quarry dust can be used in construction works which results in construction cost. By using natural resources the environment is protected.

Aims: The aim of this paper is to investigate the influence of the volume fraction of fibres, the depth of the beam and the shear span-to-depth ratio on the shear strength of steel fibre reinforced concrete beams. Background: Concrete is a material widely used in structures, as it has high compressive strength and stiffness with low cost manufacturing. However, it presents low tensile strength and ductility. Therefore, through years various materials have been embedded inside it to improve its properties, one of which is steel fibres. Steel fibre reinforced concrete presents improved flexural, tensile, shear and torsional strength and post-cracking ductility. Objective: A better understanding of the shear performance of SFRC could lead to improved behaviour and higher safety of structures subject to high shear forces. Therefore, the influence of steel fibres on shear strength of reinforced concrete beams without transverse reinforcement is experimentally investigated. Methods: Eighteen concrete beams were constructed for this purpose and tested under monotonic four-point bending, six of which were made of plain concrete and twelve of SFRC. Two different aspect ratios of beams, steel fibres volume fractions and shear span-to-depth ratios were selected. Results: During the experimental tests, the ultimate loading, deformation at the mid-span, propagation of cracks and failure mode were detected. From the tests, it was shown that SFRC beams with high volume fractions of fibres exhibited an increased shear capacity. Conclusion: The addition of steel fibres resulted in a slight increase of the compressive strength and a significant increase in the tensile strength of concrete and shear resistance capacity of the beam. Moreover, these beams exhibit a more ductile behaviour. Empirical relations predicting the shear strength capacity of fibre reinforced concrete beams were revised and applied successfully to verify the experimental results obtained in this study.

This paper reports experimental data on the structural performance of disturbed regions in reinforced concrete beams with corrosion damage to the embedded steel stirrups. A total of 15 reinforced concrete beams were constructed and tested. The test beams were 350 mm deep, 125 mm wide, and 1850 mm long. The beams were tested in three-point bending under a simply supported span of 1500 mm. Nine beams had the embedded stirrups subjected to accelerated corrosion. The test variables were the corrosion damage level and the shear span-to-depth ratio. The test results indicated that the corroded beams exhibited reduced shear strength in comparison to the uncorroded control specimens. The shear strength reduction was up to 53%. Furthermore, the reduction in shear strength due to the corrosion was found to be greater at smaller shear span-to-depth ratios.

This paper investigates the effects of different parameters on the live load carrying capacity of concrete beams reinforced with FRP bars. The author performed a parametric study utilizing an innovative numerical approach to inspect the effects of multiple variables such as reinforcement ratio, concrete compressive strength, span to depth ratio, FRP type, and bar diameter on load carrying capacity of FRP reinforced concrete beams. This study concluded that unless the span to height ratio is smaller than 8, tension-controlled sections are impractical as they do not meet code requirements for serviceability. In addition, it is recommended to use higher reinforcement ratios when using larger span to depth ratios and/or when using CFRP reinforcing bars. Moreover, larger number of bars with small diameter is more practical than fewer large diameter bars. Furthermore, this research suggests that increasing the concrete compressive strength is associated with a significant increase in the ultimate flexural capacity of FRP reinforced beams.

Experimental tests were carried out to assess the failure model of steel fiber reinforced concrete beams. Experimental research was focused on observing changes in the behavior of the tested elements depending on the amount of shear reinforcement and the fiber. Model two-span beams with a cross-section of 80x180 mm and a length of 2000 mm were tested. The beams had varied stirrup spacing. The following amounts of steel fibres in concrete were used: 78.5 kg/m3 (1.0%) i 118 kg/m3 (1.5%). Concrete beams without fibres were examined at the same time. The beams were loaded in a five-point bending test until they were destroyed. Shear or bending capacity of the element was observed. Fibre reinforced concrete beams were not destroyed rapidly, but they kept their shape consistent under load. Larger number of diagonal cracks with a smaller width were observed in fibre reinforced concrete beams. Failure of concrete beams without fibres was rapid, with a characteristic brittle cracking. Steel fibres revealed the ability to transfer significant shear stress after cracking in comparison to plain concrete.

Externally bonded fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) plates and sheets for strengthening and rehabilitating existing reinforced concrete structures have recently received a great deal of attention within the civil engineering community. Many tests have shown the benefits of FRP, but more information is required on their behaviour in cold regions. Twenty-seven small-scale concrete beams (100 mm × 150 mm × 1220 mm) were strengthened with FRP in flexure (and in some cases also in shear), subjected to up to 200 freeze–thaw cycles, and tested to failure in four-point bending. Test results were compared with those predicted by theoretical models and reasonable agreement between the tests and the models was obtained. Current design guidelines for FRP-strengthened beams were compared against the test data and were found to be adequate for the artificially aged beams. The test data also indicated that no significant damage to the glass or carbon FRP-strengthened concrete beams had occurred because of freeze–thaw cycling.Key words: concrete, rehabilitation, fibre reinforced polymers, FRP, beams, freeze–thaw, cold region engineering, flexure, external strengthening.

The classic theory mentions that the assessment of deflection and crack width should be taken to minimize those two behaviors. This research itself has the objective to examine whether the additional fiber steel and increased reinforcement ratio has any significant impact on the deflection and existing crack width. This test used the reinforced concrete beams with a size of 15 cm x 25 cm x 180 cm which placed on a simple pedestal. The test was done gradually in every 108 kg until the reinforced yield reached. The fiber increased from 0%, 1.57%, 3.14% and 4.71% while the performance rebar ratio increased from 2 # 10, 2 # 12, and 2 # 14. The result shows that additional 4.71% of maximum fiber decrease compressive strength and rupture modulus while the tensile strength increased. The additional fiber reached a maximum in 4.71% and the additional diameter of 10 mm, 12 mm, and 14 mm increased the deflections and crack width.

Construction field has experienced a growing interest in Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) due to its various advantages. The disposal of industrial waste especially non biodegradable waste is creating a lot of problems in the environment. In the present investigation, an attempt has been made by using non biodegradable waste (polyester fibers) in the concrete to improve the crack resistance and strength. Concrete having compressive strength of 25MPa is used for this study. Samples were prepared by using various fiber contents starting from 0 to 6% of with an increment of 0.5% for finding Compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strengths. It is observed that, compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strengths of concretes is increasing as the fiber content is increased up to some extent.

An experimental study was carried out to evaluate the ductility of reinforced concrete beams longitudinally reinforced with hybrid FRP-Steel bars. The specimens were fourteen reinforced concrete beams with and without hybrid reinforcement. The test variables were bars position, the ratio of longitudinal reinforcement, and the type of FRP bars. The beams were loaded up to failure using a four-point bending test. The performance of the tested beams was observed using the load-deflection curve obtained from the test. Numerical analysis using the fiber element model was used to examine the growth of neutral axis depth due to the effect of test variables. The neutral axis curves were then used to further estimate the neutral axis angle and neutral axis displacement index. The test results show that the position of the reinforcement greatly influences the flexural behavior of the beam with hybrid reinforcement. It was observed from the test that the flexural capacity of beams with hybrid reinforcement is 4% to 50% higher than that of the beams with conventional steel bars depending on bars position and the ratio of longitudinal reinforcement. The ductility decreases as the hybrid reinforcement ratio (Af/As) increases. This study also showed that a numerical model developed can predict the flexural behavior of beams with hybrid reinforcement with reasonable accuracy.
