The transition to oxy-fuel combustion power cycles is a prospective way to decrease carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere from the energy sector. To identify which technology has the highest efficiency and the lowest emission level, a thermodynamic analysis of the semiclosed oxy-fuel combustion combined cycle (SCOC-CC), the E-MATIANT cycle, and the Allam cycle was carried out. The modeling methodology has been described in detail, including the approaches to defining the working fluid properties, the mathematical models of the air separation unit, and the cooled gas turbine cycles’ calculation algorithms. The gas turbine inlet parameters were optimized using the developed modeling methodology for the three oxy-fuel combustion power cycles with CO2 recirculation in the inlet temperature at a range of 1000 to 1700 °C. The effect of the coolant flow precooling was evaluated. It was found that a decrease in the coolant temperature could lead to an increase of the net efficiency up to 3.2% for the SCOC-CC cycle and up to 0.8% for the E-MATIANT cycle. The final comparison showed that the Allam cycle’s net efficiency is 5.6% higher compared to the SCOC-CC cycle, and 11.5% higher compared with the E-MATIANT cycle.

Oxy-fuel combustion coal-fired power plants can achieve significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, but at the cost of lowering their efficiency. Research and development are conducted to reduce the efficiency penalty and to improve their reliability. High-pressure oxy-fuel combustion has been shown to improve the overall performance by recuperating more of the fuel enthalpy into the power cycle. In our previous papers, we demonstrated how pressurized oxy-fuel combustion indeed achieves higher net efficiency than that of conventional atmospheric oxy-fuel power cycles. The system utilizes a cryogenic air separation unit, a carbon dioxide purification/compression unit, and flue gas recirculation system, adding to its cost. In this study, we perform a techno-economic feasibility study of pressurized oxy-fuel combustion power systems. A number of reports and papers have been used to develop reliable models which can predict the costs of power plant components, its operation, and carbon dioxide capture specific systems, etc. We evaluate different metrics including capital investments, cost of electricity, and CO2 avoidance costs. Based on our cost analysis, we show that the pressurized oxy-fuel power system is an effective solution in comparison to other carbon dioxide capture technologies. The higher heat recovery displaces some of the regeneration components of the feedwater system. Moreover, pressurized operating conditions lead to reduction in the size of several other critical components. Sensitivity analysis with respect to important parameters such as coal price and plant capacity is performed. The analysis suggests a guideline to operate pressurized oxy-fuel combustion power plants in a more cost-effective way.

Abstract Thermal power plants operating on fossil fuels emit a considerable amount of polluting gases including carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Several technologies have been developed or under development to avoid the emissions of, mainly, CO2 that are formed as a result of air-fuel combustion. While post-combustion capture methods are viable solutions for reduction of CO2 in the existing power plants, implementation of the concept of oxyfuel combustion in future power cycles appears to be a promising technique for clean power generation from fossil fuels. A novel power cycle that employs oxyfuel combustion method has been developed by NET Power. Known as the Allam cycle, it includes a turbine, an air separation unit (ASU), a combustor, a recuperator, a water separator, CO2 compression with intercooling and CO2 pump. (Over 90% of the supercritical CO2 flow is recycled back to the cycle as the working fluid, and the rest is extracted for further processing and storage. The present paper introduces a simplified thermodynamic analysis of the Allam power cycle. Analytical expressions are derived for the net power output, optimum turbine inlet temperature (TIT), and the molar flowrate of the recycled CO2 flow. The study aims to provide a theoretical framework to help understand the functional relationships between the various operating parameters of the cycle. The optimum TIT predicted by the presented expression is 1473 K which is fairly close to that reported by the cycle developers.

Abstract In the paper the results of analysis of an integrated gasification combined cycle IGCC polygeneration system, of which the task is to produce both electricity and synthesis gas, are shown. Assuming the structure of the system and the power rating of a combined cycle, the consumption of the synthesis gas for chemical production makes it necessary to supplement the lack of synthesis gas used for electricity production with the natural gas. As a result a change of the composition of the fuel gas supplied to the gas turbine occurs. In the paper the influence of the change of gas composition on the gas turbine characteristics is shown. In the calculations of the gas turbine the own computational algorithm was used. During the study the influence of the change of composition of gaseous fuel on the characteristic quantities was examined. The calculations were realized for different cases of cooling of the gas turbine expander’s blades (constant cooling air mass flow, constant cooling air index, constant temperature of blade material). Subsequently, the influence of the degree of integration of the gas turbine with the air separation unit on the main characteristics was analyzed.

In Aug 2004 the Zero Emission Norwegian Gas (ZENG) project team completed Phase-1: Concept and Feasibility Study for a 40 MW Pilot & Demonstration (P&D) Plant, that is proposed will be located at the Energy Park, Risavika, near Stavanger in South Norway during 2008. The power plant cycle is based upon implementation of the natural gas (NG) and oxygen fueled Gas Generator (GG) (1500°F/1500 psi) successfully demonstrated by Clean Energy Systems (CES) Inc. The GG operations was originally tested in Feb 2003 and is currently (Feb 2005) undergoing extensive commissioning at the CES 5MW Kimberlina Test Plant, near Bakersfield, California. The ZENG P&D Plant will be an important next step in an accelerating path towards demonstrating large-scale (+200 MW) commercial implementation of zero-emission power plants before the end of this decade. However, development work also entails having a detailed commercial understanding of the techno-economic potential for such power plant cycles: specifically in an environment where the future penalty for carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions remains uncertain. Work done in dialogue with suppliers during ZENG Project Phase-1 has cost-estimated all major plant components to a level commensurate with engineering pre-screening. The study has also identified several features of the proposed power plant that has enabled improvements in thermodynamic efficiency from 37% up to present level of 44–46% without compromising the criteria of implementation using “near-term” available technology. The work has investigated: i. Integration between the cryogenic air separation unit (ASU) and the power plant. ii. Use of gas turbine technology for the intermediate pressure (IP) steam turbine. iii. Optimal use of turbo-expanders and heat-exchangers to mitigate the power consumption incurred for oxygen production. iv. Improved condenser design for more efficient CO2 separation and removal. v. Sensitivity of process design criteria to “small” variations in modeling of the physical properties for CO2/steam working fluid near saturation. vi. Use of a second “conventional” pure steam Rankine bottoming cycle. In future analysis, not all these improvements need necessarily be seen to be cost-effective when taking into account total P&D program objectives; thermodynamic efficiency, power plant investment, operations and maintenance cost. However, they do represent important considerations towards “total” optimization when designing the P&D Plant. We observe that Project Phase-2: Pre-Engineering & Qualification should focus on optimization of plant size with respect to total capital investment (CAPEX); and identification of further opportunities for extended technology migration from gas turbine environment that could also permit raised turbine inlet temperatures (TIT).

The commercialization of Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) Power has been aided by concepts involving the integration of a cryogenic air separation unit (ASU) with the gas turbine combined-cycle module. Other processes, such as coal-based ironmaking and combined power/industrial gas production facilities, can also benefit from the integration. It is known and now widely accepted that an ASU designed for “elevated pressure” service and optimally integrated with the gas turbine can increase overall IGCC power output, increase overall efficiency, and decrease the net cost of power generation when compared to nonintegrated facilities employing low-pressure ASUs. The specific gas turbine, gasification technology, NOx emission specification, and other site specific factors determine the optimal degree of compressed air and nitrogen stream integration. Continuing advancements in both air separation and gas turbine technologies offer new integration opportunities to improve performance and reduce costs. This paper reviews basic integration principles and describes next-generation concepts based on advanced high pressure ratio gas turbines, Humid Air Turbine (HAT) cycles and integration of compression heat and refrigeration sources from the ASU. Operability issues associated with integration are reviewed and control measures are described for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of these facilities.

Abstract Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) is considered as one of the advanced clean coal power technologies. Here, we have investigated an IGCC with air separation unit (ASU) on the basis of exergy analysis, and clarified the distribution of exergy destruction in sub-systems including air separation unit, coal gasifier, coal gas clean-up unit, air compressor, combustor of gas turbine, gas turbine, heat recovery steam generation and steam turbine. Particularly, we have focused on the interaction between the ASU and the gas turbine (GT). The results obtained disclosed the significant role of the integration between air separation unit and air compressor in the GT, and the effect of nitrogen injection to the combustor on IGCC overall performance. The study also points out that larger exergy destruction take place in the processes of gasification, combustion in GT, and air separation, and so does the change of exergy destruction distribution with the air integration degree and the nitrogen injection ratio. We have demonstrated the potential for improving the IGCC system. This investigation will be valuable for the synthesis of next-generation IGCC.

The effect of injecting steam generated by exhaust gas waste heat into a gas turbine with 3060°R turbine inlet temperature has been analyzed. Two alternate steam injection cycles are compared with a combined cycle using a conventional steam bottoming cycle. A range of compression ratios (8, 12, 16, and 20) and water mass injection ratios (0 to 0.4) were analyzed to determine effect on net turbine power output per pound of air and cycle thermodynamic efficiency. A water/fuel cost tradeoff analysis is also provided. The results indicate promising performance and economic advantages of steam injected cycles relative to more conventional utility power cycles. Application to coal-fired configuration is briefly discussed.

An IGCC (integrated gasification combined cycle) plant couples a power block to a gasification block. The method of integrating a gas turbine with a gasification process is the major design option. Matching between the gas turbine and the air separation unit is especially important. This study analyzes the influences of IGCC design options on the operability and performance of the gas turbine. Another research focus is given to the estimation of the change of turbine metal temperature in the IGCC operating environment. For this purpose, a full off-design analysis of the gas turbine is used with the turbine blade cooling model. Four different syngas fuels are considered. As the integration degree becomes lower, the gas turbine power and efficiency increase. However, a lower integration degree causes a reduction of the compressor surge margin and overheating of the turbine metal. Only near 100% integration degree designs are almost free of those two problems. The syngas property also affects the gas turbine operation. As the heating value gets lower, the problems of surge margin reduction and metal overheating become more severe. Modifications of the compressor (adding a couple of stages) and the turbine (increasing gas path area) could solve the compressor surge problem. However, the turbine overheating problem still exists. In particular, the turbine modification is predicted to overheat turbine metal considerably.

This study aims to present various design aspects and realizable performance of the natural gas fired semi-closed oxy-fuel combustion combined cycle (SCOC-CC). Design parameters of the cycle are set up on the basis of component technologies of today’s state-of-the-art gas turbines with a turbine inlet temperature between 1400°C and 1600°C. The most important part in the cycle analysis is the turbine cooling which affects the cycle performance considerably. A thermodynamic cooling model is introduced to predict the reasonable amount of turbine coolant to maintain the turbine blade temperature of the SCOC-CC at the levels of those of conventional gas turbines. Optimal pressure ratio ranges of the SCOC-CC for two different turbine inlet temperature levels are searched. The performance penalty due to the CO2 capture is examined. Also investigated are the influences of the purity of oxygen provided by the air separation unit on the cycle performance. A comparison with the conventional combined cycle adopting a post-combustion CO2 capture is carried out taking into account the relationship between performance and CO2 capture rate.

Abstract Since the solid fuels like coal produce a lot of ash upon burning, the products of combustion can’t be expanded as it is in a Gas Turbine (GT). Hence, the operation of a combined cycle with solid fuels includes: (i) production of syngas from the coal to operate a gas turbine engine and (ii) using the leftover coal after gasification to produce steam and operate a steam turbine engine. To avoid the coal-gasification and to use the solid coal fuel as it is in a combined cycle power plant, a novel Air-Steam Combined Cycle (ASCC) is proposed in the present work. ASCC comprises a gas turbine cycle (operating by the Brayton cycle) with the air as the working fluid and a steam turbine cycle (operating by the Rankine cycle) with the steam as the working fluid. A fraction F of the air is compressed, regenerated and finally heated to an Air Turbine Inlet Temperature (ATIT) by the hot products of combustion produced upon burning of the bituminous coal in a combustor. The residual heat energy of products of combustion is then utilized in a Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) to generate the steam initially and subsequently to preheat the remaining fraction (1-F) of the air. After expansion in an air turbine, the hot air passes through a regenerator directly into a combustor along with the preheated air for burning the coal so as to utilize the energy of expanded air completely. ASCC is analyzed based on the first and second laws of thermodynamics and a computer code is developed in MATLAB to simulate the cycle performance at different compressor pressure ratios, ATITs, and HRSG pressures. The performance of ASCC is compared with that of Baseline Steam Turbine Cycle (BSTC) for the same flue gas (stack) temperature. It is found that the overall thermal efficiency of ASCC can go up to 33.0%–37.5% depending on the compressor pressure ratio, ATIT and HRSG pressure as against to 29.0%–29.5% of BSTC.
