As a critical infrastructure, the modern electrical network is faced with various types of threats, such as accidental natural disaster attacks and deliberate artificial attacks, thus the power system fortification has attracted great concerns in the community of academic, industry, and military. Nevertheless, the attacker is commonly assumed to be capable of accessing all information in the literature (e.g., network configuration and defensive plan are explicitly provided to the attacker), which might always be the truth since the grid data access permission is usually restricted. In this paper, the information asymmetry between defender and attacker is investigated, leading to an optimal deception strategy problem for power system fortification. Both the proposed deception and traditional protection strategies are formulated as a tri-level mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem and solved via two-stage robust optimization (RO) framework and the column-and-constraint generation (CCG) algorithm. Comprehensive case studies on the 6-bus system and IEEE 57-bus system are implemented to reveal the difference between these two strategies and identify the significance of information deception. Numerical results indicate that deception strategy is superior to protection strategy. In addition, detailed discussions on the performance evaluation and convergence analysis are presented as well.

<span lang="EN-US">This paper presents a study of the optimal power flow (OPF) for a large scale power system. A metaheuristic search method based on the Ant Lion Optimizer (ALO) algorithm is presented and has been confirmed in the real and larger scale Algerian 114-bus system for the OPF problem with and without static VAR compensator (SVC) devices. To get the highest impact of SVC devices in terms of improving the voltage profile, minimize the total generation cost and reduction of active power losses, the ALO algorithm was applied to determine the optimal allocation of SVC devices. The results obtained by the ALO method were compared with other methods in the literature such as DE, GA-ED-PS, QP, and MOALO, to see the efficiency of the proposed method. The proposed method has been tested on the Algerian 114-bus system with objective functions is the minimization of total generation cost (TGC) with two different vectors of variables control.</span>

Power imbalances such as power shortfalls and photovoltaic (PV) curtailments have become a major problem in conventional power systems due to the introduction of renewable energy sources. There can be large power shortfalls and PV curtailments because of PV forecasting errors. These imbalances might increase when installed PV capacity increases. This study proposes a new scheduling method to reduce power shortfalls and PV curtailments in a PV integrated large power system with a battery energy storage system (BESS). The model of the Kanto area, which is about 30% of Japan’s power usage with 60 GW grid capacity, is used in simulations. The effect of large PV power integration of 50 GW and 100 GW together with large BESS capacity of 100 GWh and 200 GWh has been studied. Mixed integer linear programming technique is used to calculate generator unit commitment and BESS charging and discharging schedules. The simulation results are shown for two months with high and low solar irradiance, which include days with large PV over forecast and under forecast errors. The results reveal that the proposed method eliminates power shortfalls by 100% with the BESS and reduce the PV curtailments by 69.5% and 95.2% for the months with high and low solar irradiance, respectively, when 200 GWh BESS and 100 GW PV power generation are installed.

<p>This paper solves an optimal reactive power scheduling problem in the deregulated power system using the evolutionary based Cuckoo Search Algorithm (CSA). Reactive power scheduling is a very important problem in the power system operation, which is a nonlinear and mixed integer programming problem. It optimizes a specific objective function while satisfying all the equality and inequality constraints. In this paper, CSA is used to determine the optimal settings of control variables such as generator voltages, transformer tap positions and the amount of reactive compensation required to optimize the certain objective functions. The CSA algorithm has been developed from the inspiration that the obligate brood parasitism of some Cuckoo species lay their eggs in nests of other host birds which are of other species. The performance of CSA for solving the proposed optimal reactive power scheduling problem is examined on standard Ward Hale 6 bus, IEEE 30 bus, 57 bus, 118 bus and 300 bus test systems. The simulation results show that the proposed approach is more suitable, effective and efficient compared to other optimization techniques presented in the literature.</p>

The integrated power and natural gas energy system (IPGES) is of great significance to promote the coordination and complementarity of multi-energy flow, and it is an important carrier to increase the proportion of wind power accommodation and achieve the goal of carbon emission reduction. In this paper, firstly, the reward and punishment ladder-type carbon trading model is constructed, and the impact of the carbon trading mechanisms on the carbon emission sources in the power system is comparatively analyzed. Secondly, in order to achieve a reasonable allocation of carbon resources in IPGES, a bi-level optimization model is established while taking into account the economics of dispatching and the requirements of carbon emission reduction. Among them, the outer layer is the optimal carbon price solution model considering carbon trading; in the inner layer, considering the power system constraints, natural gas system constraints, and coupling element operation constraints, a stochastic optimal dispatching model of IPGES based on scenario analysis is established. Scenario generation and reduction methods are used to deal with the uncertainty of wind power, and the inner model is processed as a mixed integer linear programming problem. In the MATLAB environment, program the dichotomy and call the Gurobi optimization solver to complete the interactive solution of the inner and outer models. Finally, case studies that use an integrated IEEE 39-bus power system and Belgian 20-node gas system demonstrate the effectiveness and scalability of the proposed model and optimization method.

Fault analysis study is the important parameter of economic, reliable and secure power system planning and operation. Power system studies are important during the planning and conceptual design stages of the project. This paper presents the fault analysis on IEEE-9 bus system. The line to ground fault is created on bus 5th and analyzed the variation in Voltage, Real power, Reactive power on different buses. The fault at 5th bus of IEEE-9 bus system is analyzed on PSCAD software.

Reliability of network is need of the hour in the present power system market and is constrained by capability of the network. The network calculations are performed using accurate and high efficient strategies. In order to perform power transactions in the system, the computation of available transfer capability is essential which a metric of capability of the system. Generally, effect wattless power is not taken into account in the methodologies for computation of linear available transfer capability. In this paper, a methodology which considers the reactive power flows for enhancement of linear ATC is presented. In order to perform analysis theoretically, a standard IEEE 3 bus system is considered. Another case study i.e., 14 bus system available in IEEE test systems is used for simulation analysis. FACTS technology is incorporated in the existing system in order to enhance capability of the network. To facilitate transfer maximum power in the system, an optimal power-flow-based ATC enhancement model is formulated and presented along with simulation results. Studies based on the IEEE 3-bus system and 14-bus systems with TCSC demonstrate the effectiveness of FACTS control on ATC enhancement.

The cumulative number of historical and recent power system outages substantiates the fact that further studies are necessary for an improved solution to the issue of voltage instability on the grid and the subsequent system collapse. Voltage collapse is a serious reliability issue which inhibits the objective of running a reliable and secure power system network. In this study, a new line stability index (NLSI_1) for predicting voltage collapse is presented.  The new index considers a switching logic which is derived from the difference of voltage angle between the two load buses. The index is deployed for performance analysis using the 28-bus, 330-kV Nigeria National Grid (NNG).  The simulation implemented in MATLAB shows that the index gives the same results as Line stability index (Lmn) and Fast Voltage Stability Index (FVSI) indices. The base case and the contingency scenarios were considered during the simulation. The base case analysis using the NNG values of all the three indices FVSI, Lmn, and NLSI_1 for simulation generates a value less than one for the entire lines which implies that the NNG is stable in this mode. The values of the three indices are almost the same, which confirms the accuracy of the novel index developed. The analysis for the contingency case reveals that the load bus 16 (Gombe) which has the lowest, maximum permissible reactive load of 139.5MVAR is the weakest; also power line 16-19 is identified as the critical line. The result of the simulation confirms that the accuracy was improved by using NLSI_1.
