The field of gifted and talented studies has its origins in the intelligence quotient research of the late 19th and early 20th century. These psychological foundations remain a strong influence even though the field has since expanded to include other paradigms and greater diversity in conceptions of giftedness and talent. Some researchers argue that the field could benefit from greater interdisciplinary engagement, especially in studies of gifted and talented girls, which tend to include a focus on how gifted girls’ external environments influence their emotional worlds. This article proposes that concepts developed by critical sociologist Pierre Bourdieu are useful for expanding and deepening understandings of the internal and external worlds of gifted and talented girls. It offers evidence from a recent qualitative study with academically gifted and talented teenaged girls in New Zealand. The results highlighted the marginalised position of the gifted and talented identity and the privileging of identities that were based on dispositions versus innate ability. The study also identified a hierarchy of valued forms of capital within the teenage girl social landscape and a resulting theorisation of an empowered gifted and talented girl habitus. This article demonstrates how Bourdieu’s work is a constructive addition to the field.

Working in professional kitchens, women chefs face multiple challenges including gender segregation and stereotyping, unfair human-resource policies and procedures, exclusion from professional networks, lack of work–life balance and lack of support [1]. Under these circumstances, it is not surprising that few women chefs progress to prime positions in professional kitchens. Although many leave the industry, some women chefs have persevered and succeeded in attaining executive roles. These women’s success stories, and how they have been achieved, are worth examining in order to benefit the growth of the chef sector. The aim of the research reported in this article [2] was to explore the life histories of women executive chefs in order to understand how it has influenced their careers. Previous studies have described the working environments of chefs but have not captured women’s perspectives [3, 4]. This study therefore aimed to understand how women chefs progress in the profession, what their experiences have been, and what influences their professional trajectories. The study adopted a life-history research approach to allow participants’ lives and experiences to be made visible [5]. The interview participants were 23 women executive chefs who were, or had been, managing commercial kitchens in New Zealand, with professional responsibilities including financial control, menu design, food production, and leading a team of kitchen staff. The participants had been in the industry between seven and more than 40 years. Most were executive chefs at their own establishments; six were employees of chained establishments or fine-dining restaurants; and three had since moved on to other paths in the industry, such as education or owning a food-related business. When examining the women’s trajectories into an executive chef position, a notable finding was that family was found to have strong influence on their career journeys, including changes in career direction and career length. Out of the 23 participants, 21 (91%) mentioned the influence of their family of origin on their career choices. It was clear that parents’ opinions about the chef profession and families’ expectations and needs had been a strong influence on the women’s interest in becoming a chef and their resulting professional pathways. Further, participants particularly valued the support from their family throughout their professional careers. Being a chef is demanding, and the participants considered support from family had helped sustain their professional advancement. Changes in family circumstances, such as getting married or becoming partnered, also influenced the women’s career progression. In this research, having children was identified as the main obstacle to women chefs’ career advancement and the main cause of women leaving the chef profession. Furthermore, many participants expressed concerns about conflict between work and family responsibilities because, on top of the long hours and demands of their work environments, they were also the primary caregivers in their families and performed most of the household tasks. Different strategies were applied by the participants to resolve work–family conflicts. Some sought childcare help from family or professional services; in search of more flexible work schedules, some had left their jobs to work in other establishments in the hospitality industry or opened their own establishments; and some took a break from the kitchen to focus on childcare and domestic responsibilities. This finding explains the predominance in the participant profiles, mentioned above, of women executive chefs either owning their own establishments or having left their executive roles. By revealing women executive chefs’ stories, this research has contributed new insights into the challenges they encounter during their careers. The importance of parental support in the development and growth of women chefs in the professional kitchen is emphasised. At the same time, the study urges food and beverage establishments to provide a family-friendly environment and to develop policies and procedures that allow work–life balance for women within the industry. <p>This research investigates how young Somali women are navigating through the resettlement process while negotiating their own identities in Wellington, New Zealand. It is important as it addresses two main research gaps: 1) it focuses on research with young Somali women at university and 2) it offers a strength-based analysis. The research also addresses important development concerns about how former refugees can better contribute into their host societies. Employing the use of participatory methods within a feminist qualitative methodology, I created a project that enabled the young women to voice their opinions regarding identity construction, cultural maintenance and their goals for the future.  I conducted approximately 150 hours of ethnographic research at organisations that catered to former refugee needs. I found a young female Somali student who worked as my Cultural Advisor and enhanced my credibility and access within the Somali community. I then conducted a focus group and five individual interviews with young Somali women to hear their narratives about their resettlement experience and their advice on how to improve the process for others. I conducted five interviews with key informants at organisations that provide support services for former refugees. The key informants gave the policy perspective on refugee resettlement as well as advice on how support services and the government can approve the transition for former refugees.  The results of this study revealed that the young women did feel tension at times negotiating their Somali culture and that of their host society but found benefits in both. The importance of the family resettling successfully was vital for the young women especially the wellbeing of their mothers and other female elders. The key informants echoed these sentiments and voiced the necessity for more women-focused support services. The young women also will be facing a second resettlement process through their emigration to Australia as they search for more job opportunities and a better Somali cultural connection.</p>

<p>The sexual behaviour of young emergent adult women in New Zealand has become a target of media attention and commentary. Moralising language is prevalent in the public discourse, describing young women negatively with respect to character and psychology. Research investigating the increase of cultural artefacts such as hooking up or casual sex is often risk-focused, concentrating predominantly on detrimental impacts such as STIs, rape-risks, and depression. Some feminist analyses describe behaviour as postfeminist or as examples of false consciousness. Despite these positions, young New Zealand women are engaging in these and other non-relationship sexual activities in growing numbers, suggesting that current approaches are failing to capture salient explanatory information. Due to the negative impacts of social constraints such as the sexual double standard, traditional femininity and moralising social commentary on young women it is important to present a more holistic image of their behaviour so as to provide a deeper explanatory view which better accounts for young women’s experiences and motivations. In this study I utilise a mixed method research design to access a wide range of participants on a sensitive research topic. A self-selecting sample of 163 young women aged between 18 and 30, recruited from various university campuses around New Zealand, completed an online survey. From this group 18 heterosexually-identifying young women were selected to participate in instant messaging, email and face to face interviews, and an online discussion group. To analyse the material they provided I use a Third Wave feminist theoretical lens in order to give primacy not only to their voices but also their claims to agency and the importance of subjective positionality. I use Sexual Script Theory as a framework to illuminate the impact of cultural dialogues on individuals, and space was conceptualised as a way to illustrate performances and agency. Results suggest that young New Zealand women are strongly affected by risk-focused and moralising dialogues to the effect that they have internalised a risk-focused cultural script that guides their sexual interactions and behaviours within socio-sexual culture in constrained and avoidant ways. Other performed scripts such as ‘good girl’ femininity, traditional masculinity, and the normative performance of heterosex also presented as barriers to subjective sexual experience/development. However, many young women in this study were resistant to some of these scripts, as evidenced in their attempts to occupy traditionally masculine and/or social spaces where non-normative behaviours are (partially) permitted. Their behaviour suggests critical engagement with their socio-sexual environment and some awareness of script elements that dictate acceptable feminine behaviour, and how these constraints can be (at least temporarily) resisted as a means to not only developing sexual subjectivity but also to refashioning modern femininity.</p>

This article reports on the key findings of a recent study undertaken by Aya Shibata, exploring teachers' and counsellors' perceptions of gifted children and of gifted education policy in New Zealand and Japan. The study took the form of qualitative, comparative case studies, and involved semi-structured interviews with teachers and school counsellors in New Zealand and Japan. Key findings highlight a lack of official support for gifted education in Japan, while acknowledging the place of out-of-school, private programmes as a form of gifted education. The study offers insight into Japanese cultural concepts relevant to gifted and talented education, and suggests directions for future research.

In this article we address Labov's claim that sound changes that are not stigmatized are led especially by young women who are the “movers and shakers” in the community, people with energy and enterprise. Such young women, at the same time, are conservative with respect to sound changes or stable linguistic variables that are stigmatized. We investigated this claim by comparing the pronunciation of the non-stigmatized front vowels /I/, /ε/, and /æ/ with that of the stigmatized diphthongs /ai/ and /a[inverted omega]/ in New Zealand English. When we considered the pronunciation of each variable, the young women did not unequivocally support Labov's claim. However, when we examined the behavior of individual speakers across the two sets of variables, Labov's claim was supported. This result leads us to emphasize the importance of considering the behavior of individual speakers in a more holistic way rather than focusing only on the averaged data for single variables.

Centralization of the short /I/ vowel (as in KIT) is regarded by both linguists and lay observers as a defining feature of New Zealand English and even of national identity, especially when contrasted with the close front Australian realization. Variation in the KIT vowel is studied in the conversation of a sociolinguistic sample of 60 speakers of NZE, structured by gender, ethnicity (Maori and Pakeha [Anglo]) and age. KIT realizations are scattered from close front through to rather low backed positions, although some phonetic environments favour fronter variants. All Pakeha and most Maori informants use centralized realizations most of the time, but some older Maori speakers use more close front variants. This group is apparently influenced by the realization of short /I/ in the Maori language, as these are also the only fluent speakers of Maori in the sample. Close front realizations of KIT thus serve as a marker of Maori ethnicity, while centralization marks general New Zealand identity. Centralized /I/ appears to have been established in NZE by the early 20th century

In the literature of mainstream scientific psychology, German scholar William Stern has been known primarily (if at all) as the inventor of the intelligence quotient (IQ). In fact, however, Stern’s contributions to psychology were much greater and more consequential than this. In this all-inclusive article, I have sought to provide readers with a fuller appreciation for the breadth and depth of Stern’s work, and, in particular, for that comprehensive system of thought that he elaborated under the name “critical personalism.” Drawing frequently on translated quotations from Stern’s published works, and on his personal correspondence with the Freiburg philosopher Jonas Cohn, I have endeavored to show how Stern was much more than “the IQ guy.” During the first 20 years of his academic career, spent at the University of Breslau in what is now the Polish city of Wroclaw, Stern founded that sub-discipline of psychology that would be concentrated on the study of individual differences in various aspects of human psychological functioning. He also made major contributions to that sub-discipline referred to at the time as “child” psychology, and laid the foundations for a comprehensive system of thought that he would name “critical personalism.” After relocating to Hamburg in 1916, Stern continued his scholarly efforts in these domains, taught courses both in psychology and in philosophy at the university that opened its doors there in 1919, and played major administrative roles there in the institutional homes of both disciplines until forced to flee Nazi Germany in 1934. The present chapter highlights ways in which, over the course of his scholarly career, Stern boldly opposed certain trends within mainstream thinking that were ascendant during his time.

Acoustic analysis of word-list and sentence data from a database of spoken New Zealand English is used to address the suggestion that a number of vowel contrasts in this variety are moving towards a quantity-based distinction. Data from 73 speakers across three age groups and two sexes are analysed, for a total of almost 6,000 vowel tokens. The move to a quantity distinction is confirmed for thestrut‒startcontrast. In the case ofdressandfleece, younger and female speakers show greater overlap of the two vowels but also stronger diphthongisation offleece. The data also confirm the fronting offootaway fromthoughtand towardsgoose, but with no evident adjustment in durational contrasts or in the diphthongisation of either long vowel.Kitis becoming increasingly centralised, especially in the speech of young women, and is as a consequence becoming more distinct fromnurse. The findings are discussed in the context of the system of vowel contrasts in this variety.
