Compound fault diagnosis is challenging due to the complexity, diversity and non-stationary characteristics of mechanical complex faults. In this paper, a novel compound fault separation method based on singular negentropy difference spectrum (SNDS) and integrated fast spectral correlation (IFSC) is proposed. Firstly, the original signal was de-noised by SNDS which improved the noise reduction effect of singular difference spectrum by introducing negative entropy. Secondly, the de-noised signal was analyzed by fast spectral correlation. Finally, IFSC took the fourth-order energy as the index to determine the resonance band and separate the fault features of different single fault. The proposed method is applied to analyze the simulated compound signals and the experimental vibration signals, the results show that the proposed method has excellent performance in the separation of rolling bearing composite faults.

It is challenging to extract weak impulse features from vibration signals corrupted by strong noise in mechanical fault diagnosis. Due to its simple calculation, fast convergence and easy implementation, K-singular value decomposition (K-SVD) has been widely used in rolling bearing fault diagnosis. However, it fails to consider the influence of noise and harmonics on atoms learning from impulse characteristics, which results in many irrelevant atoms, and then increases the difficulty of extracting the impulse features in bearing fault signals. Therefore, a clustering K-SVD-based sparse representation method is proposed in this paper and it is combined with the particle swarm optimisation (PSO)-based time-varying filter empirical mode decomposition (TVF-EMD) for rolling bearing fault diagnosis. The PSO-based TVF-EMD is developed to automatically decompose the original signal to eliminate the impact of noise and harmonics on the impulses in the signal. Then, the clustering K-SVD method is applied to perform dictionary learning on the sensitive component containing impulses to obtain a redundant dictionary of atoms with obvious impulse patterns. Finally, the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm is introduced to extract the fault features from rolling bearing vibration signals. The experimental results show that the proposed method can improve the robustness of the dictionary atoms to noise and achieve the extraction of rolling bearing fault features.

Rolling bearings are important parts of mechanical equipment. However, the early failures of the bearing are usually masked by heavy noise. This brings about difficulties to the extraction of its fault features. Therefore, there is a need to develop a reliable method for early fault detection of the bearing. Considering this issue, a novel fault diagnosis method using the improved wavelet threshold denoising and fast spectral correlation (Fast-SC) is proposed. First, to solve the discontinuity of the hard threshold function and avoid the constant deviation triggered by the soft threshold function, a piecewise continuous threshold function is proposed by using a new threshold selection rule to denoise the original signal. In the new threshold function, the adjuster α is introduced to improve the traditional wavelet denoising algorithm, so as to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the original signal more effectively. Then, the denoised signal is analysed by Fast-SC to identify the rolling bearing fault features. Finally, simulation analysis and experimental data demonstrate that the proposed approach is effective for rolling bearing fault detection compared with Fast-SC and the combined method based on traditional wavelet threshold and Fast-SC.

In order to process the vagueness in vibration fault diagnosis of rolling bearing, a new correlation coefficient of simplified neutrosophic sets (SNSs) is proposed. Vibration signals of rolling bearings are acquired by an acceleration sensor, and a morphological filter is used to reduce the noise effect. Wavelet packet is applied to decompose the vibration signals into eight subfrequency bands, and the eigenvectors associated with energy eigenvalue of each frequency are extracted for fault features. The SNSs of each fault types are established according to energy eigenvectors. Finally, a correlation coefficient of two SNSs is proposed to diagnose the bearing fault types. The experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively diagnose the bearing faults.

Fault vibration signals of gear box are faint shock and are hardly extracted, which bring a big difficulty for diagnosis. This paper mainly introduces the basic principle of the resonance demodulation technique and its application study in the gear box’s fault diagnosis. The developed resonance demodulation technique can effectively extract the fault features from complex vibration signals through the resonance demodulation technique according to the vibration features of the gear box, and improve the equipments’ fault diagnosis precision.

There are mainly two problems with the current feature extraction methods used in the electrostatic monitoring of rolling bearings, which affect their abilities to identify early faults: (1) since noises are mixed in the electrostatic signals, it is difficult to extract weak early fault features; (2) traditional time and frequency domain features have limited ability to provide a quantitative indicator of degradation state. With regard to these two problems, a new feature extraction method for rolling bearing fault diagnosis by electrostatic monitoring sensors is proposed in this paper. First, the spectrum interpolation is adopted to suppress the power-frequency interference in the electrostatic signal. Then the resultant signal is used to construct Hankel matrix, the number of useful components is automatically selected based on the difference spectrum of singular values, after that the signal is reconstructed to remove background noises and random pulses. Finally, the permutation entropy of the denoised signal is calculated and smoothed using the exponential weighted moving average method, which is used to be a quantitative indicator of bearing performance state. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively remove noises and significantly bring forward the time when early faults are detected.

Rolling bearings are vital components in rotary machinery, and their operating condition affects the entire mechanical systems. As one of the most important denoising methods for nonlinear systems, local projection (LP) denoising method can be used to reduce noise effectively. Afterwards, high-order polynomials are utilized to estimate the centroid of the neighborhood to better preserve complete geometry of attractors; thus, high-order local projection (HLP) can improve noise reduction performance. This paper proposed an adaptive high-order local projection (AHLP) denoising method in the field of fault diagnosis of rolling bearings to deal with different kinds of vibration signals of faulty rolling bearings. Optimal orders can be selected corresponding to vibration signals of outer ring fault (ORF) and inner ring fault (IRF) rolling bearings, because they have different nonlinear geometric structures. The vibration signal model of faulty rolling bearing is adopted in numerical simulations, and the characteristic frequencies of simulated signals can be well extracted by the proposed method. Furthermore, two kinds of experimental data have been processed in application researches, and fault frequencies of ORF and IRF rolling bearings can be both clearly extracted by the proposed method. The theoretical derivation, numerical simulations, and application research can indicate that the proposed novel approach is promising in the field of fault diagnosis of rolling bearing.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to achieve an accurate intelligent fault diagnosis of rolling bearing. Design/methodology/approach To extract deep features of the original vibration signal and improve the generalization ability and robustness of the fault diagnosis model, this paper proposes a fault diagnosis method of rolling bearing based on multiscale convolutional neural network (MCNN) and decision fusion. The original vibration signals are normalized and matrixed to form grayscale image samples. In addition, multiscale samples can be achieved by convoluting these samples with different convolution kernels. Subsequently, MCNN is constructed for fault diagnosis. The results of MCNN are put into a data fusion model to obtain comprehensive fault diagnosis results. Findings The bearing data sets with multiple multivariate time series are used to testify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The proposed model can achieve 99.8% accuracy of fault diagnosis. Based on MCNN and decision fusion, the accuracy can be improved by 0.7%–3.4% compared with other models. Originality/value The proposed model can extract deep general features of vibration signals by MCNN and obtained robust fault diagnosis results based on the decision fusion model. For a long time series of vibration signals with noise, the proposed model can still achieve accurate fault diagnosis.

Deep learning-based intelligent fault diagnosis methods have attracted increasing attention for their automatic feature extraction ability. However, existing works are usually under the assumption that the training and test dataset share similar distributions, which unfortunately always violates real practice due to the variety of working conditions. In this paper, an end-to-end scheme of joint use of two-direction signals and capsule network (CN) is proposed for fault diagnosis of rolling bearing. With the help of the superior ability of CN in capturing the spatial position information between features, more valuable information can be mined. Aiming to eliminate the influence of different rotational speeds, vertical and horizontal vibration signals are fused as the input to CN, so that invariant features can be extracted automatically from the raw signals. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by experimental data of rolling bearing under different rotational speeds and compared with a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN). The results demonstrate that the proposed scheme is able to recognize the fault types of rolling bearing under scenarios of different rotational speeds.

The vibration signals of rolling element bearings are non-linear and non-stationary and the corresponding fault features are difficult to be extracted. EEMD (Ensemble empirical mode decomposition) is effective to detect bearing faults. In the present investigation, MEEMD (Modified EEMD) is presented to diagnose the outer and inner race faults of bearings. The original vibration signals are analyzed using IMFs (intrinsic mode functions) extracted by MEEMD decomposition and Hilbert spectrum in the proposed method. The numerical and experimental results of the comparison between MEEMD and EEMD indicate that the proposed method is more effective to extract the fault features of outer and inner race of bearings than EEMD.
