In pedestrian dynamics, individual-based models serve to simulate the behavior of crowds so that evacuation times and crowd densities can be estimated or the efficiency of public transportation optimized. Often, train systems are investigated where seat choice may have a great impact on capacity utilization, especially when passengers get in each other’s way. Therefore, it is useful to reproduce passengers’ behavior inside trains. However, there is surprisingly little research on the subject. Do passengers distribute evenly as it is most often assumed in simulation models and as one would expect from a system that obeys the laws of thermodynamics? Conversely, is there a higher degree of order? To answer these questions, we collect data on seating behavior in Munich’s suburban trains and analyze it. Clear preferences are revealed that contradict the former assumption of a uniform distribution. We subsequently introduce a model that matches the probability distributions we observed. We demonstrate the applicability of our model and present a qualitative validation with a simulation example. The model’s implementation is part of the free and open-source Vadere simulation framework for pedestrian dynamics and thus available for further studies. The model can be used as one component in larger systems for the simulation of public transport.

Transportasi dan angkutan umum merupakan suatu persoalan yang selalu dihadapi oleh pemerintah di berbagai daerah di tanah air ini, terutama daerah yang memiliki suasana kota yang yang ramai karena  padatnya penduduk serta tingginya intensitas masyarakatnya diikuti dengan tidak sesuainya jumlah moda transportasi umum serta belum seimbangnya luas ruas jalan antar kota dalam propinsi yang  mempunyai struktur serta aktifitas penduduk sudah tergolong sagat tinggi. Regulasi kebijakan pemerintah propinsi Jawa Timur yang tertuang dalam Peraturan Gubernur Jawa Timur No. 27 Tahun 2016. Dinas perhubungan sebagai implementor, melakukan sosialisasi kepada masyarakat, serta menyediakan sarana sebagai pendukung dalam system transportasi di Jawa Timur. Dalam penelitian ini kami menggunakan metode kualitatif yang menghasilkan gambaran (deskripsi) mengenai hal-hal yang berkaitan dengan apa yang diteliti. Kualitatif sendiri merupakan wujud kata-kata dari pada deretan angka-angka. Pendekatan metode deskriptif dapat diartikan sebagai pemecahan masalah dengan menggambarkan atau melukiskan keadaan subjek atau objek penelitian, baik perilaku individu, kelompok masyarakat, lembaga-lembaga dan lain-lain sebagainya.Kata kunci : Implementasi, Pelayanan PublikABSTRACT. Public transportation and transportation is a problem that is always faced by the government in various regions in this country, especially areas that have a bustling city atmosphere due to overcrowding and high intensity of the community followed by mismatching the number of modes of public transportation and the imbalance of the size of roads inter-city in the province which has a structure and activity of the population is already classified as very high. East Java provincial government policy regulations contained in East Java Governor Regulation No. 27 of 2016. Transportation Agency as an implementor, conducts socialization to the community, and provides facilities as a support in the transportation system in East Java. In this study we used a qualitative method that produced a description (description) of matters relating to what was studied. Qualitative itself is a form of words rather than a row of numbers. Descriptive method approach can be interpreted as problem solving by describing or describing the state of the subject or object of research, both the behavior of individuals, community groups, institutions and so forth.Keywords: Implementation, Public Services

AbstractA nonparametric stochastic model is developed and tested for the simulation of tropical cyclone tracks. Tropical cyclone tracks demonstrate continuity and memory over many time and space steps. Clusters of tracks can be coherent, and the separation between clusters may be marked by geographical locations where groups of tracks diverge as a result of the physics of the underlying process. Consequently, their evolution may be non-Markovian. Markovian simulation models, as are often used, may produce tracks that potentially diverge or lose memory quicker than happens in nature. This is addressed here through a model that simulates tracks by randomly sampling track segments of varying length, selected from historical tracks. For performance evaluation, a spatial grid is imposed on the domain of interest. For each grid box, long-term tropical cyclone risk is assessed through the annual probability distributions of the number of storm hours, landfalls, winds, and other statistics. Total storm length is determined at birth by local distribution, and movement to other tropical cyclone segments by distance to neighbor tracks, comparative vector, and age of track. The model is also applied to the conditional simulation of hurricane tracks from specific positions for hurricanes that were not included in the model fitting so as to see whether the probabilistic coverage intervals properly cover the subsequent track. Consequently, tests of both the long-term probability distributions of hurricane landfall and of event simulations from the model are provided.

Over the next 35 years, the population of Switzerland is expected to grow by 25%. One possible way to accommodate this larger population is to transform smaller cities in Switzerland through the direct intervention of urban planners. In this work, we integrate agent-based simulation models of people flow, mobility and urban infrastructure with models of the electricity and gas systems to examine the increase of the density of existing residential zones and the creation of new workplaces and commercial activities in these urban areas. This novel simulation framework is used to assess, for the year 2050, two different scenarios of urbanization in a region with small urban areas. It is shown that a densification scenario, with a preference for multi-dwelling buildings, consumes 93% less land than a sprawl scenario, with a preference for single-family houses. The former scenario also accommodates 27% more people than the latter scenario, as there is a higher penetration of battery electric vehicles – and therefore reduced air pollution from the transportation sector – and also a larger shift of commuters to the use of public transport. However, in the former scenario, the commuting time is 20% longer. The outcome of this work demonstrates how this novel simulation framework can be used to support the formulation of policies that can direct the transformation of urban areas.

There is a large number of tools for the simulation of traffic and routes in public transport systems. These use different simulation models (macroscopic, microscopic, and mesoscopic). Unfortunately, these simulation tools are limited when simulating a complete public transport system, which includes all its buses and routes (up to 270 for the London Underground). The processing times for these type of simulations increase in an unmanageable way since all the relevant variables that are required to simulate consistently and reliably the system behavior must be included. In this paper, we present a new simulation model for public transport routes’ simulation called Masivo. It runs the public transport stops’ operations in OpenCL work items concurrently, using a multi-core high performance platform. The performance results of Masivo show a speed-up factor of 10.2 compared with the simulator model running with one compute unit and a speed-up factor of 278 times faster than the validation simulator. The real-time factor achieved was 3050 times faster than the 10 h simulated duration, for a public transport system of 300 stops, 2400 buses, and 456,997 passengers.

The early evaluation of a proposed function structure for a product and also, the possibility to expose the potential failures related to this provides that the design process can be modeled in its entirety. However, so far there are no existed suitable models for the early phase of design process. This article presents an integrated approach aimed to explore the behaviors of concept designs in the early design phase. The approach is founded on a combination of Petri net, π-numbers, qualitative physics principles and Design Structure Matrix. The final aim is to implement this method on the SysML modeling language to integrate a simulation approach that is initially not standardized in the language. A second interest of the approach is to provide a coherent simulation framework that can be used as a reference to verify the coherency of other simulation models further in the design process.

The company then plans to share its capacity with another dying industry. Both the companies plan to cooperate and share resources. Simulation is a very useful tool for predicting supply chain performance. Because there are no standard simulation elements that represent accurately the activities in a supply chain, there exist a variety of approaches for developing supply chain simulation models. To improve this situation, this paper describes a novel supply chain simulation framework that follows the Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) model. This framework has been used for building powerful simulation models that integrate discrete event simulation and spreadsheets. The simulation models are hierarchical and use submodels that capture activities specific to supply chains. The SCOR framework provides a basis for defining the level of detail in a way as to include as many features as possible, while not making them industry specific. This approach enables the reuse of submodels, which reduces development time. The paper describes the implementation of the simulation models and how the submodels interact during execution.

Pedestrian dynamics is an interdisciplinary field of research. Psychologists, sociologists, traffic engineers, physicists, mathematicians and computer scientists all strive to understand the dynamics of a moving crowd. In principle, computer simulations offer means to further this understanding. Yet, unlike for many classic dynamical systems in physics, there is no universally accepted locomotion model for crowd dynamics. On the contrary, a multitude of approaches, with very different characteristics, compete. Often only the experts in one special model type are able to assess the consequences these characteristics have on a simulation study. Therefore, scientists from all disciplines who wish to use simulations to analyze pedestrian dynamics need a tool to compare competing approaches. Developers, too, would profit from an easy way to get insight into an alternative modeling ansatz. Vadere meets this interdisciplinary demand by offering an open-source simulation framework that is lightweight in its approach and in its user interface while offering pre-implemented versions of the most widely spread models.

AbstractThe degree of order versus randomness in mammalian cortical circuits has been the subject of much discussion. Previous reports showed that at a large scale there is smooth tonotopy in mouse auditory cortex, while at the single neuron level the representation is the traditional “salt and pepper” configuration attributed to rodent cortex. Here we show that at the micro columnar scale we find a large variety of response profiles, but neurons tend to share similar preference in terms of frequency, bandwidth and latency. However, this smooth representation was fractured and large differences were possible between neighbouring neurons. Despite the tendency of most groups of neurons to operate redundantly, high information gains were achieved between cells that had a high signal correlation. Connectivity between neurons was highly non-random, in agreement with a previous in-vitro report from layer five. Our results suggest the existence of functional clusters, connecting neighbouring mini-columns. This supports the idea of a “salt and pepper” configuration at the level of functional clusters of neurons rather than single units.
