This work is dedicated to the growth process and investigation of luminescent and scintillation properties of CeAlO3 single crystals and CeAlO3/CeAl11O18 metamaterials under e-beam and α-particles excitation. It has been shown that cathodoluminescence and radioluminescence spectra of CeAlO3 crystals contain two bands, peaking at 440 and 500 nm, and caused by the Ce3+ 5d–4f transitions into CeAl11O18 phase, which is present in these crystals as an admixture. Under 270 nm ultraviolet (UV) light excitation, a CeAlO3 crystal possesses complicated non-exponential luminescence decay, with the average decay time of 16 ns. The light yield of CeAlO3 crystals under α-particle excitation is about 16% and 12%, in respect to the standard Bi4Ge3O12 (BGO) crystal and Y3Al5O12:Ce (YAG:Ce) single crystalline film samples, respectively. The CeAlO3 scintillation decay is quite fast, with the decay time value t1/e in the 54–56 ns range.

ABSTRACTThis work is dedicated to the development of new type of UV phosphors based on single crystalline films (SCF) of aluminum garnet compounds grown by liquid phase epitaxy (LPE). The development of two types of UV emitting SCF scintillators is reported in this work: 1) Pr-doped SCF of Y-Lu-Al garnet having the intensive Pr3+ f-d luminescence in the 300-400 nm spectral ranges with a decay time of about 13-18 ns; 2) SCF of Y-Lu-Al-garnet doped with Sc3+ isoelectronic impurity emitting in the 290-400 nm range due to the formation of the ScY,Lu and ScAl centers with a luminescence decay time in the order of several hundred ns.

AbstractZnWO4 powders with grain size in range 20 nm–10 µm have been synthesized by a simple combustion method and subsequent calcinations. The photocatalytic activities of powders were tested by degradation of methylene blue solution under UV light. The luminescence spectra and luminescence decay kinetics were studied and luminescence decay time dependence on average powder-grain size was obtained. The correlation between self-trapped exciton luminescence decay time and photocatalytic activity of ZnWO4 powders was shown. A model explaining the excitonic luminescence decay time correlation with photocatalytic activity was proposed.

The scintillation properties of novel type of composite scintillator based on Lu3Al5O12:Pr (LuAG:Pr) single crystalline film (SCF) and LuAG:Sc substrate grown by the liquid-phase epitaxy method are considered in this work. The registration of α-particles and γ-quanta in such types of composites occurs by means of separation of the scintillation decay kinetics of SCF and crystal parts, respectively. Namely, under excitation by α-particles of 241Am (5.5 MeV) source and γ-quanta of 137Cs (662 keV) source, the large differences in the respective scintillation decay kinetics and decay time values tα and tγ are observed for the LuAG:Pr SCF/LuAG:Sc SC composite scintillator with various film thicknesses. Furthermore, the best tγ/tα ratio above 4.5 is achieved for such types of epitaxial structure with SCF and substrate thicknesses of 17 μm and about 0.5 mm, respectively. The development types of composite scintillators can be successfully applied for simultaneous registration of α-particles and γ-quanta in the mixed radiation fluxes.

Intense photoluminescence (PL) has been observed at room temperature from the polycrystalline SiC samples prepared from carbon-saturated Si melt at a temperature ranging from 1500 to 1650°C. Composition and structure of the samples have been confirmed by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. PL measurements with 325 nm UV light excitation revealed that the room temperature PL spectrum of the samples consists of 3 luminescent bands, the peak energies of which are 2.38 eV, 2.77 eV and 3.06 eV, respectively. The 2.38 eV band is much stronger than the others. It is suggested that some extrinsic PL mechanisms associated with defect or interface states would be responsible to the intensive PL observed at room temperature.

ABSTRACTCerium fluoride offers a reasonable compromise between parameters like the density, the light yield, the scintillation characteristics (particularly the decay time) and the radiation hardness, and is considered today as the best candidate for large electromagnetic calorimeters in future High Energy Physics experiments. Details on the performances of large crystals produced by different manufacturers all over the world and measured by the Crystal Clear collaboration will be shown and the usefulness of a good collaboration between the industry and the users will be highlighted by some examples on the light yield and radiation hardness improvement.

AbstractSingle crystals of two cesium rare-earth molybdates CsLn(MoO4)2(Ln=Eu, Tb) have been prepared using the high temperature molten salt (flux) method. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses reveal that they crystallize in the orthorhombic space groupPccm(No. 49) and features a 2D layer structure that is composed of [Ln(MoO4)2]∞and [Cs]∞layers. Under near-UV light excitation, emission spectrum of CsEu(MoO4)2consists of several sharp lines due to the characteristic electronic transitions of Eu3+ions, whereas CsTb(MoO4)2exhibits characteristic green emission of Tb3+ions.
