A series of copper-based systems containing two different nanocomposites (Cu2O/CuO and Cu2O/Cu) was synthesized by the egg white assisted auto-combustion route. This method was distinguished by the simplicity of its steps, low cost, one-pot synthesis process at low temperature and, short time. The characterization of the as prepared nanocomposites was carried out by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron micrograph (TEM), Energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) techniques. Surface and magnetic properties of the obtained systems were determined by using N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms at 77 K and the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) technique. XRD results confirmed the formation of Cu2O/CuO and Cu2O/Cu nanocomposites with different ratios of well crystalline CuO, Cu2O, and Cu phases. FTIR results of the combusted product displays the presence of both CuO and Cu2O, respectively. SEM/EDS and TEM results confirm the formation of a porous nanocomposite containing Cu, O, and C elements. The change in concentration of the oxygen vacancies at the surface or interface of both Cu2O/CuO and Cu2O/Cu nanoparticles resulted in different changes in their magnetization. Based on this study, it is possible to obtain nanocomposite-based copper with multiple valances by a simple and inexpensive route which can be suitable for the fabrication of different transition metal composites.

The multiferroic BiFeO3 powders with perovskite structure were synthesized by sol-gel auto-combustion and conventional sol-gel methods, respectively. As-prepared powders were characterized by XRD, SEM and VSM techniques to investigate phase structure, microstructure and magnetic properties. The results show that the pure phase BiFeO3 powders are obtained successfully by sol-gel auto-combustion after calcining at 650°C for 2h and leaching by HNO3. Compared with conventional sol-gel method which got pure phase BiFeO3 powders at 800°C for 3h, the sol-gel auto-combustion technique can get more pure powders at low temperature, short time and low cost. The particle sizes of the BiFeO3 powders are smaller and well distributed by the sol-gel auto-combustion method than that of the conventional sol-gel method. Furthermore, the magnetic properties at room temperature prepared by the sol-gel auto-combustion methods are significant higher than that of conventional sol-gel method.

A novel one pot synthesis approach in oleic acid medium was employed to obtain monophasic ZnSe quantum dots (QD) of average size 3.7nm. The QDs were well crystalline in hexagonal phase as revealed by x-ray diffraction and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) studies. The ZnSe QDs exhibit sharp emission peak in the blue (465nm) with 385picosecond fluorescence decay time. The theoretical band gap corresponding to 3.7nm ZnSe QDs matched well with the measured 3.11eV band gap of synthesized QDs which thus showed quantum confinement effect.

A do-it-yourself silver particle-free ink is presented, which shows good stability, low cost and excellent printability. The ink is formulated in selected alcohols. Highly conductive silver patterns were printed on both glass and flexible substrates.

S-aryl thioacetates can be prepared by reaction of inexpensive potassium thioacetate with both electron-rich and electron-poor aryl iodides under a base-free copper/ligand catalytic system. CuI as copper source affords S-aryl thioacetates in good to excellent yields, by using 1,10-phenanthroline as a ligand in toluene at 100 °C after 24 h. Under microwave irradiation the time was drastically reduced to 2 h. Both procedures are simple and involve a low-cost catalytic system. This methodology was also applied to the “one-pot” synthesis of target heterocycles, such as 3H-benzo[c][1,2]dithiol-3-one and 2-methylbenzothiazole, alkyl aryl sulfides, diaryl disulfides and asymmetric diaryl sulfides in good yields.
