The Curiosity rover has landed on Mars since 2012. One of the instruments onboard the rover is a pair of multispectral cameras known as Mastcams, which act as eyes of the rover. In this paper, we summarize our recent studies on some interesting image processing projects for Mastcams. In particular, we will address perceptually lossless compression of Mastcam images, debayering and resolution enhancement of Mastcam images, high resolution stereo and disparity map generation using fused Mastcam images, and improved performance of anomaly detection and pixel clustering using combined left and right Mastcam images. The main goal of this review paper is to raise public awareness about these interesting Mastcam projects and also stimulate interests in the research community to further develop new algorithms for those applications.

A multi-agent architecture for a Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) solution is presented and evaluated. The underlying rationale for such an architecture is that each agent (load event detection, feature extraction, and classification) outperforms others of the same type in particular scenarios; hence, by combining the expertise of these agents, the system presents an improved performance. Known NILM algorithms, as well as new algorithms, proposed by the authors, were individually evaluated and compared. The proposed architecture considers a NILM system composed of Load Monitoring Modules (LMM) that report to a Center of Operations, required in larger facilities. For the purposed of evaluating and comparing performance, five load event detect agents, five feature extraction agents, and five classification agents were studied so that the best combinations of agents could be implemented in LMMs. To evaluate the proposed system, the COOLL and the LIT-Dataset were used. Performance improvements were detected in all scenarios, with power-ON and power-OFF detection improving up to 13%, while classification accuracy improved up to 9.4%.

Stereo vision has become an attractive topic research in the last decades. Many implementations such as the autonomous car, 3D movie, 3D object generation, are produced using this technique. The advantages of using two cameras in stereo vision are the disparity map between images. Disparity map will produce distance estimation of the object. Distance measurement is a crucial parameter for an autonomous car. The distance between corresponding points between the left and right images must be precisely measured to get an accurate distance. One of the most challenging in stereo vision is to find corresponding points between left and right images (stereo matching). This paper proposed distance measurement using stereo vision using Semi-Global Block Matching algorithm for stereo matching purpose. The object is captured using a calibrated stereo camera. The images pair then optimized using WLS Filter to reduce noises. The implementation results of this algorithm are furthermore converted to a metric unit for distance measurement. The result shows that the stereo vision distance measurement using Semi-Global Block Matching gives a good result. The obtained best result of this work contains error of less than 1% for 1m distance

The consequences of plastic debris in the marine environment were reviewed, and possible solutions were presented. The extent of marine plastic debris-related problems surpasses many other marine problems, as plastics may be transported globally and no unaffected areas seem to exist. Many animal species are in risk, most commonly studied are the effects on marine mammals and seabirds. Marine plastic debris creates new concerns such as entanglement, ghost fishing, and impaction of digestive tracts in animals. It also increases the severity of already existing concerns such as transport, exposure and uptake of organic pollution, with reduced fitness and impaired reproduction and increased mortality rates as consequences. To alleviate the problems, reducing the extent of marine plastic pollution is critical. Possible methods were identified as collecting and incentivizing recycling of marine plastic debris; redirecting production from petroleum plastics to biodegradable varieties; increase public awareness to reduce marine littering; stricter enforcement of current legislation as well as implementation of stricter legislation and harsher penalties for breaking it.Asian J. Image mosaicing is one of the most important subjects of research in computer vision at current. Image mocaicing requires the integration of direct techniques and feature based techniques. Direct techniques are found to be very useful for mosaicing large overlapping regions, small translations and rotations while feature based techniques are useful for small overlapping regions. Feature based image mosaicing is a combination of corner detection, corner matching, motion parameters estimation and image stitching. Furthermore, image mosaicing is considered the process of obtaining a wider field-of-view of a scene from a sequence of partial views, which has been an attractive research area because of its wide range of applications, including motion detection, resolution enhancement, monitoring global land usage, and medical imaging. Numerous algorithms for image mosaicing have been proposed over the last two decades. In this paper the authors present a review on different approaches for image mosaicing and the literature over the past few years in the field of image masaicing methodologies. The authors take an overview on the various methods for image mosaicing. This review paper also provides an in depth survey of the existing image mosaicing algorithms by classifying them into several groups. For each group, the fundamental concepts are first clearly explained. Finally this paper also reviews and discusses the strength and weaknesses of all the mosaicing groups.
