The study is directed to the search of a simple effective catalyst for ethyl lactate obtained from fructose as renewable raw material. A series of SnO2-containing oxides prepared by impregnation of alumina were characterized by several techniques in order to determine their textural and acid-base properties. The transformation of a 13% fructose solution in 98% ethanol over SnO2/Al2O3 catalysts using autoclave rotated with 60 rpm at 160 °C for 3 h was studied. It was found that doping SnO2/Al2O3 samples with ZnO improves selectivity towards ethyl lactate. The supported SnO2-ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst provides 100% fructose conversion with 55% yield of ethyl lactate at 160 °C. A possible scheme of fructose transformation into ethyl lactate on L-acid IVSn4+ sites is discussed.

Two new compounds from the formazan series, viz. 1,3-diphenyl-5-(1H-tetrazol-2-yl)formazan and 1,3-diphenyl-5-(2H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)formazan, were prepared, and the dissociation constants and molar absorptivities of all of their acid-base species were determined spectrophotometrically employing the SPEKTFOT computer program.

Boron oxide in the Na2O.P2O5-x B2O3 system behaves as a Lux base. Its addition to Na2O.P2O5 brings about transformation of a Co(II) indicator from octahedral to tetrahedral configuration, increase in the optical basicity ΛPb(II), increase in the relative basicity of the melt as determined by means of a galvanic cell, and depolymerization reactions releasing PO43- ions. In the Na2O-B2O3 system free of P2O5, boron oxide behaves as a Lux acid. The amphoretic nature of B2O3 is explained in terms of Lux's acid-base theory extended in analogy with the protolysis theory. The theoretical optical basicity values do not indicate the amphoretic behaviour of B2O3 because in this approach boron oxide is a priori regarded as more acidic than Na2O.P2O5.

AbstractConversion of the abundant agricultural residual cotton stalk (CS) into useful chemicals or functional materials could alleviate the fossil fuels caused energy shortages and environmental crises. Although some advances have been achieved, less attention has been paid to the plant tissues effect. In this study, the plant tissue of CS was changed by part degradation of some components (hemicelluloses and lignin, for example) with the aid of acid/base (or both). The pretreated CS was transformed into hydrochar by hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) method. Morphological and chemical compositions of CS hydrochar were analyzed by various techniques, including elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), BET analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Methylene blue (MB) removal of prepared CS hydrochar was used to evaluate CS hydrochar pollutions adsorption capacity. Results reveal acid/base (or both) pretreatment is beneficial for CS raw material to prepare high-quality CS hydrochar. The effects of some parameters, such as initial MB concentration, temperature, pH value and recyclability on the adsorption of MB onto both acid and base-pretreated CS hydrochar (CS-H2SO4 + NaOH-HTC) were studied. The present work exhibits the importance of agricultural waste biomass material plant tissues on its derived materials, which will have a positive effect on the direct utilization of waste biomass.
