Organic derivatives of boron, such as boronic esters and acids, are important precursors for a wide range of environmental, energy, and health applications. Several catalytic methods for their synthesis have been reported, even though with the use of toxic and structurally complex ligands. Herein, we demonstrate preliminary studies envisaging the synthesis of boronic esters from an inexpensive catalytic system based on Cu/Al layered double hydroxides (LDH) in the presence of Na2PdCl4. The Cu/ Al LDHs were prepared according to coprecipitation method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) (with Rietveld refinement) to evaluate the contamination with malachite and other phases. Preliminary catalytic results suggest that pure Cu/Al LDH has potential for the borylation of aryl iodides/ bromides in the absence of base. Indeed, a synergic effect between copper and palladium is possibly related to the catalytic efficiency.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been widely investigated in a wide range of applications in health, in the pharmaceutical industry and in the material of biotechnology industries. This material can be considered as a group of promising materials in the development of new health applications. The combination of phosphonic acid with LDHs material create a new hybrid material with new properties. In this work the synthesis of Zn/Al double lay-ered hydroxides by chemical co-precipitation method (molar ration 2) and grafted with Diamino Dodecyl Phosphonic Acid (DDPA) via anion-exchange mechanism. The samples were characterized and confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the presence of diamino dodecyl phosphonic acid (DDPA ) was verified by Elemental analysis, BET analysis, and infrared spec-troscopy. Both of the samples were found to be showing antibacterial activ-ity. The zone diameters of Zn-Al- LDH were 40 mm and 25 mm for Esche-richia coli(ATCC 25922) and Streptococcus (ATCC 25922)and 20 mm for bacillus (ATCC 25922) whereas the same for hybrid LDH (Zn-Al-DDPA)were43 mm , 32 mm and 25 mm for the same bacteria showing stronger antibacterial activity of the grafted material over the material itself. The experimental results confirm the application of Zn-Al-DDPA in the field of antibacterial activities and may offer a promising antibacterial elucidation to the society.

In recent years, the search for solutions for the treatment of water pollution by toxic compounds such as phenols and chlorophenols has been increasing. Phenols and their derivatives are widely used in the manufacture of pesticides, insecticides, paper, and wood preservers, among other things. Chlorophenols are partially biodegradable but not directly photodegradable by sunlight and are extremely toxic—especially 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, which is considered to be potentially carcinogenic. As a viable proposal to be applied in the treatment of water contaminated with 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, this paper presents an application study of the thermally activated Mg/Fe layered double hydroxides as photocatalysts for the mineralization of this contaminant. Activated Mg/Fe layered double hydroxides were characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, N2 physisorption, and scanning electron microscopy with X-ray dispersive energy. The results of the photocatalytic degradation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol in aqueous solution showed good photocatalytic activity, with an efficiency of degradation of up to 93% and mineralization of 82%; degradation values which are higher than that of TiO2-P25, which only reached 18% degradation. The degradation capacity is attributed to the structure of the MgO–MgFe2O4 oxides derived from double laminate hydroxide Mg/Fe. A path of degradation based on a mechanism of superoxide and hollow radicals is proposed.

This work establishes a simple method for synthesising layered double hydroxides (LDHs) powders with coprecipitation. The characteristics of the samples were investigated y X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and spectrophotometer UV–Vis (DRS). Non-uniform distribution was shown for LDHs samples by SEM. Photocatalytic efficiencies were tested using methylene blue (MB) dye as a model contaminant under UV irradiation. In particular, Zn–Al-Ti LDH exhibited an excellent performance towards MB degradation compared with commercial TiO2 nanoparticles. Methylene blue removal percentage was reached at almost 100%, whereas commercial TiO2 reached a removal rate of only 66% under the same conditions within 20 min. The aim of the current work is to prepare Zn-Al-Ti layered double hydroxides nanocomposite and to evaluate their photocatalytic activity in the removal of methylene blue under UV irradiation.

The present study has a dual aim of supporting magnetic nanoparticles over the nanolayers of LDHs and designing two-dimensional magnetic nano-nets of cobalt ferrite. In this trend, nanoparticles of CoFe2O4 were prepared and supported by Co-Fe LDH through urea hydrolysis. The nanolayered structures of Co-Fe LDH were confirmed by X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, FT-IR spectra, thermal analyses, and transmission electron microscopy. In addition, they indicated that 13.2% CoFe2O4 were supported over Co-Fe LDH. Transformation of the nanolayered structures of Co-Fe LDH to nano-nets was achieved by the catalytic effect of the supported CoFe2O4 nanoparticles through solvent thermal technique. X-ray diffraction patterns and transmission electron microscopy images confirmed the transformation of the supported Co-Fe LDH to nano-nets of cobalt ferrite. In order to indicate the effect of the LDH for designing the nano-nets, nanoparticles of cobalt ferrite were prepared by the same technique without LDH. The magnetic behavior of the nano-nets and the supported Co-Fe LDH were measured and compared with the nanoparticles through vibrating sample magnetometer technique. The magnetic parameters indicated that the prepared nano-nets have ferromagnetic behavior and high coercivity. However, the prepared nanoparticles revealed a superparamagnetic state and low coercivity. The experimental results concluded that the incorporation of nanoparticles with nanowires into nano-net structures has been found to be an efficient way to improve their magnetic properties and prevent their agglomerations. Finally, layered double hydroxides are an important source for constructing magnetic nanolayered structures and nano-nets.

Abstract Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are one of the nano ordered layered compounds. The importance of layered compound is based on their ability to retain chemical species with electrical charges compatible to those of the layers. They may be used in areas such as catalysis, industry, medicine, environmental protection, construction etc. Layered double hydroxides are anionic clays comprising positively charged layers with anions and water molecules intercalated in the interlayer region. The aim of this work was to obtain Cu and/or Ni substituted layered double hydroxides with different micromorphology characteristics. The obtained results pointed out that the relationship between LDHs composition and their textural properties can be controlled. The layered double hydroxides samples were fabricated by using direct coprecipitation method. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses were used to study the textural characteristics and the structural characteristics of the samples.

We have successfully intercalated 2-aminoethanesulfonate, a well-known biomolecule taurine, into calcium-containing layered double hydroxides via optimized solid phase intercalation. According to X-ray diffraction patterns and infrared spectroscopy, it was revealed that the intercalated taurine molecules were each directly coordinated to other calcium cation and arranged in a zig-zag pattern. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the particle size and morphology of the LDHs were not affected by the solid phase intercalation, and the surface of intercalates was covered by organic moieties. From ninhydrin amine detection tests, we confirmed that most of the taurine molecules were well stabilized between the calcium-containing LDH layers.

Abstract[Zn-Al] layered double hydroxides (LDH) with cationic molar ratios of R = Zn/Al 1–5 were synthesized by the coprecipitation method at constant pH = 10. The samples synthesized and their derived forms obtained after calcination at 500°C and at 900°C (denoted Zn-Al-R, Zn-Al-R-500 and Zn-Al-R-900, respectively), were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasmamass spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and nitrogen physisorption at −196°C. The XRD study showed: (1) the presence of accessory ZnO with the LDH in samples synthesized with R ≥ 3; and (2) the lamellar structure was destroyed at 500°C which made room for a poorly ordered ZnO phase, while calcination at 900°C yielded well crystallized ZnO and ZnAl2O4. The photocatalytic activity of the calcined and the unheated samples was evaluated for the decolourization of methylene blue. The photocatalytic activity was dependent on the cationic ratio R and on the calcination temperature. The sample Zn-Al-3 displayed maximum photocatalytic activity. Calcination at 500 and 900°C improved the photocatalytic activity of LDH synthesized at R = 1 and 2.

Zn/Al and Zn/Fe layered double hydroxides has successfully synthesized by co-precipitation methods with molar ration 3:1. The samples were characterized using X-Ray Diffraction, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Surface Area using BET method. In this study, Zn/Al and Zn/Fe layered double hydroxides were used to remove direct yellow dye in aqueous solution. The experiments were carried out time variations with the aim of observing the kinetic studies. The results showed that the adsorption of direct yellow onto Zn/Al and Zn/Fe layered double hydroxides based on co-efficient correlation kinetic models more fit using pseudo-second-order than pseudo-first-order.
