Material extrusion (ME), an additive manufacturing technique, can fabricate parts almost without geometrical limitations. With the growing application of ME parts, especially in actual working conditions, the dynamic characteristics are needed to be studied to accurately determine their reliability. This study provides an experimental validation of the theoretical model for predicting the dynamic characteristics of ME plates fabricated with three different key processing parameters, i.e., extrusion width, layer height and build direction. The model is set up based on the bidirectional beam function combination method, and a series of experimental tests are performed. It is found that different processing parameters result in the material properties of the samples to vary, thus leading to different dynamic characteristics. Through the comparison between predictions and measurements, it is shown that the influencing trend of the processing parameters is predicted precisely. The theoretical model gives reliable predictions in dynamic characteristics of ME plates. The natural frequency discrepancy is below 13.4%, and the predicted mode shapes are the same as the measured ones. This present work provides theoretical basis and technical support for further research in improving the dynamic performance of ME products, and helps extend the applications of this technique.

The head frame is a key component which plays a supportive and accommodative role in the spindle system of CNC machine tool. Improving the static and dynamic characteristics has profound significance to the development of machine tool and product performance. The simplified finite element modal is established with ANSYS to carry out the static and modal analysis. The results showed that the maximum deformation of the head frame was 0.0066mm, the maximum stress was 3.94Mpa, the deformation of most region was no more than 0.0007mm, which all verified that the head frame had a good stiffness and deforming resistance; several improvement measures for dynamic performance were also proposed by analyzing the mode shapes, and the 1st order natural frequency increased 7.33% while the head frame mass only increased 1.58% applying the optimal measure, which improved the dynamic characteristics of the head frame effectively.

Abstract This paper presents a comprehensive study of the dynamic behavior of small vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) based on local fabricated Savonius VAWTs, which is suitable for countries that have moderate wind speed. The merits of this design are cleanliness, silent, start-up under low wind speed, independent wind directions, adaptability and ease of manufacturing. Also, this paper presents an experimental validation study for the optimized Savonius VAWT. Four verification test configurations of the optimized VAWT composite blades are designed, simulated and fabricated of Glass – Polyester with different stacking sequence layout for each. Modified mechanical parameters are introduced to improve the scalability, reliability, and accuracy of the developed models. Based on wind energy conversion system basics, aerodynamic characteristics (tip speed ratio (λ) and coefficient of power (Cp)), dynamic characteristics (natural frequencies and mode shapes) of Savonius-rotor models are presented and simulated within SOLIDWORKS Simulation 2020 software. The dynamic characteristics such as frequency, mode shape and damping factor are extensively investigated using Fast Fourier Transformer (FFT) analyzer. The results show that the role of composite material blades in improving the dynamic performance of a wind turbine is significant.

Abstract The dynamic characteristics of elastic joints strongly affect the dynamic performance of a jointed structure. In order to study the performance of elastically jointed structure, a theoretical model of elastic joints has been developed based on the concept of dynamic contacts, in which the joint friction and clearance effects are included. A stochastic simulation technique is used to evaluate the system characteristics of jointed structures. In this paper, a time-domain system identification method is presented, which is applied to estimate the dynamic contact parameters of elastic joints and the eigenvalues of jointed structures. The identification system may use the data generated by using the theoretical model, or from experimental tests. The joint contact stiffness and contact damping are identified to be directional dependence of contact angles. The system natural frequencies and damping ratios are varied upon joint clearance variations. The simulation and experiment results are presented in this paper, and show comparisons.

Dynamic characteristics of the Confederation Bridge were determined from recorded accelerograms of vibrations due to traffic and wind. Natural frequencies of four vertical and five transverse modes of the bridge were identified from the Fourier amplitude spectra of the accelerograms. By appropriate filtering and processing of the accelerograms, displacement time histories of vibrations associated with each of these modes were computed, which were used to determine the mode shapes of the bridge. These characteristics are essential for investigations of the dynamic performance of the bridge. The computed natural frequencies are significantly larger than those of the finite element model used in the design of the bridge. Since the dynamic effects due to traffic, wind, and seismic loads depend on the natural frequencies of the bridge, an evaluation study of these effects is needed using the natural frequencies and mode shapes obtained from measured vibrations.Key words: bridge, acceleration, displacement, record, vibration, filtering, frequency, mode, Fourier spectrum.

By studying dynamic characteristics of the leaf spring system, a new elastic component is designed to reduce the working load and to a certain extent to ensure the linearity as well as increase the amplitude in the vertical and horizontal directions in vibration screen. The modal parameters, amplitudes, and amplification factors of the leaf spring system are studied by simulation and experiment. The modal results show that the leaf spring system vibrates in horizontal and vertical directions in first and second mode shapes, respectively. It is conducive to loosening and moving the particles on the vibration screen. In addition, it is found that the maximum amplitude and amplification factor in the horizontal direction appear at 300 r/min (5 Hz) while those in the vertical direction appear at 480 r/min (8 Hz), which are higher than those in the disc spring system. Moreover, the amplitude of the leaf spring system increases proportionally with the increase of exciting force while the amplification factors are basically the same under different exciting forces, indicating the good linearity of the leaf spring system. Furthermore, the minimum exciting force occurs in the leaf spring system under the same amplitude by comparing the exciting force among different elastic components. The above works can provide guidance for the industrial production in vibration screen.

This work presents an innovative system that allows the oriented deposition of continuous fibers or long fibers, pre-impregnated or not, in a thermoplastic matrix. This system is used in an integrated way with the filamentary fusion additive manufacturing technology and allows a localized and oriented reinforcement of polymer components for advanced engineering applications at a low cost. To demonstrate the capabilities of the developed system, composite components of thermoplastic matrix (polyamide) reinforced with pre-impregnated long carbon fiber (carbon + polyamide), 1 K and 3 K, were processed and their tensile and flexural strength evaluated. It was demonstrated that the tensile strength value depends on the density of carbon fibers present in the composite, and that with the passage of 2 to 4 layers of fibers, an increase in breaking strength was obtained of about 366% and 325% for the 3 K and 1 K yarns, respectively. The increase of the fiber yarn diameter leads to higher values of tensile strength of the composite. The obtained standard deviation reveals that the deposition process gives rise to components with anisotropic mechanical properties and the need to optimize the processing parameters, especially those that lead to an increase in adhesion between deposited layers.

A virtual prototype model of Machine Tool has been constructed by using the Pro/E software and the ANSYS software. Considering the effects of contact surfaces, dynamic analyses of Machine Tool are studied. The effects of contact surfaces on the dynamic characteristics of machine tool are studied. So that the purpose predicting and evaluating synthetically the machine tool dynamic performance without a physical sample can be achieved.

As a general trend, in order to reduce material consumption or to reduce the mass of the structures, composite floor slabs solutions are used to achieve large spans floor slabs. This solutions led to floors sensitive to vibrations induced generally by human activities. As a verification of the design concepts of the composite floors, usually, it is recommended a further examination of the floor after completion by experimental tests. Although the experimental values of the dynamic response of the floor are uniquely determined, the processing can take two directions of evaluation. The first direction consist in determining the dynamic characteristics of the floor and their comparison with the design values. Another way that can be followed in the processing of the experimental results is to consider the human perception and comfort to the vibration on floors. The paper aims to present a case study on a composite floor, with steel beams and concrete slab, tested on-site. Both aspects of data processing are analyzed, in terms of the structural element, and in terms of the effect on human perception and comfort. Experimentally obtained values for the dynamic characteristics of the floor are compared with numerical values from finite element analysis, while the second type of characteristic values are compared with various human comfort threshold values found in international standards.

In this paper, the reduction in the natural frequencies of a pump-turbine impeller prototype when submerged in water has been investigated. The impeller, with a diameter of 2.870m belongs to a pump-turbine unit with a power of around 100MW. To analyze the influence of the added mass, both experimental tests and numerical simulations have been carried out. The experiment has been performed in air and in water. From the frequency response functions the modal characteristics such as natural frequencies and mode shapes have been obtained. A numerical simulation using FEM (Finite Elements Model) was done using the same boundary conditions as in the experiment (impeller in air and surrounded by a mass of water). The modal behaviour has also been calculated. The numerical results were compared with the available experimental results. The comparison shows a good agreement in the natural frequency values both in air and in water. The reduction in frequency due to the added mass effect of surrounding fluid has been calculated. The physics of this phenomenon due to the fluid structure interaction has been investigated from the analysis of the mode-shapes.
