To study the influence of turbulence on the wind pressure and aerodynamic behavior of smooth circular cylinders, wind tunnel tests of a circular cylinder based on wind pressure testing were conducted for different wind speeds and turbulent flows. The tests obtained the characteristic parameters of mean wind pressure coefficient distribution, drag coefficient, lift coefficient and correlation of wind pressure for different turbulence intensities and of Reynolds numbers. These results were also compared with those obtained by previous researchers. The results show that the minimum drag coefficient in the turbulent flow is basically constant at approximate 0.4 and is not affected by the turbulence intensity. When the Reynolds number is in the critical regime, the lift coefficient increased sharply to 0.76 in the smooth flow, indicating that flow separation has an asymmetry; however, the asymmetry does not appear in the turbulent flow. Drag coefficient decreases sharply at a lower critical Reynolds number in the turbulent flow than in the smooth flow. In the smooth flow, the separation point is about 80° in the subcritical regime; it suddenly moves backwards in the critical regime and remains almost unchanged at about 140° in the supercritical regime. However, the angular position of the separation point will always be about 140° for turbulent flow for the Reynolds number in these three regimes. Turbulence intensity and Reynolds number have a significant effect on the correlation of wind pressures around the circular cylinder. Turbulence will weaken the positive correlation of the same side and also reduce the negative correlation between the two sides of the circular cylinder.

Three-dimensional numerical simulations of laminar flow around a circular cylinder with sinusoidal variation of cross-section along the spanwise direction, named ‘wavy cylinder’, are performed. A series of wavy cylinders with different combinations of dimensionless wavelength (λ/Dm) and wave amplitude (a/Dm) are studied in detail at a Reynolds number of Re = U∞Dm/ν = 100, where U∞ is the free-stream velocity and Dm is the mean diameter of a wavy cylinder. The results of variation of mean drag coefficient and root mean square (r.m.s.) lift coefficient with dimensionless wavelength show that significant reduction of mean and fluctuating force coefficients occurs at optimal dimensionless wavelengths λ/Dm of around 2.5 and 6 respectively for the different amplitudes studied. Based on the variation of flow structures and force characteristics, the dimensionless wavelength from λ/Dm = 1 to λ/Dm = 10 is classified into three wavelength regimes corresponding to three types of wake structures. The wake structures at the near wake of different wavy cylinders are captured. For all wavy cylinders, the flow separation line varies along the spanwise direction. This leads to the development of a three-dimensional free shear layer with periodic repetition along the spanwise direction. The three-dimensional free shear layer of the wavy cylinder is larger and more stable than that of the circular cylinder, and in some cases the free shear layer even does not roll up into a mature vortex street behind the cylinder. As a result, the mean drag coefficients of some of the typical wavy cylinders are less than that of a corresponding circular cylinder with a maximum drag coefficient reduction up to 18%. The r.m.s. lift coefficients are greatly reduced to practically zero at optimal wavelengths. In the laminar flow regime (60 ≤ Re ≤ 150), the values of optimal wavelength are Reynolds number dependent.

Abstract The influence of oscillation and heat transfer on the lift and drag coefficients over a circular cylinder is numerically studied in this work. Temperature difference of 300, 600 and 900 K is used between the cylinder wall and the incoming fluid flow for Reynolds number of 100. Air is used as the fluid and the temperature dependent properties of air are used for the analysis as a significant change in the properties of air incurred. Numerical simulation is done on Ansys/fluent with O-type mesh and the vibration in the circular cylinder is induced using user defined function. The vibration of the cylinder in streamwise direction is induced at a frequency ratio of 0.5, 1, and 2, with the natural frequency of the cylinder being 2.5 Hz marking its Strouhal number. It is observed that for all the induced frequencies, the forcing function interacts with the natural frequency of the system, and the beating phenomenon spectrum is observed, where two distinct frequencies appear which correspond to the sum and difference between the natural and the forcing frequency. At the frequency ratio of 0.5 (1.25 Hz), the spectrum of lift coefficient is characterized with three peaks centered at 2.5 Hz (natural frequency), 3.75 Hz (sum) and 1.25 Hz (difference). Oscillating the isothermal cylinder at a frequency ratio of 0.5 caused a negligible increase in the rms value of the lift coefficient by 2.13%, drag coefficient by 0.17%, and had no effect on the natural frequency of the system, however at a frequency ratio of 2, a drastic increase in the rms value of lift coefficient by 137.4% and drag coefficient by 13.9% occurred, indicating the lock-on regime. As compared to the stationary isothermal cylinder, heating the cylinder 300K above the incoming flow, decreased the rms value of the lift coefficient by 62.7% and the natural frequency by 16%, while increased the drag coefficient by 7.3%. The results show that heating of cylinder in cross-flow is equivalent to running the flow at a reduced Reynolds number and in the laminar region, this is associated with lower Strouhal number and lower amplitude of lift but a higher drag.

Abstract The two-dimensional flow around a stationary heated circular cylinder at low Reynolds numbers of 50 < Re < 210 is investigated numerically using the FLUENT commercial software package. The dimensionless vortex shedding frequency (St) reduces with increasing temperature at a given Reynolds number. The effective temperature concept was used and St-Re data were successfully transformed to the St-Reeff curve. Comparisons include root-mean-square values of the lift coefficient and Nusselt number. The results agree well with available data in the literature.

Flow over bluff bodies produces vortex shedding in their wake regions, leading to structural failure from the flow-induced forces. In this study, a passive flow control method was explored to suppress the vortex shedding from a circular cylinder that causes many problems in engineering applications. Perforated shrouds were used to control the vortex shedding of a circular cylinder at Reynolds number, Re = 200. The shrouds were of non-uniform and uniform holes with 67% porosity. The spacing gap ratio between the shroud and the cylinder was set at 1.2, 1.5, 2, and 2.2. The analysis was conducted using ANSYS Fluent using a viscous laminar model. The outcomes of the simulation of the base case were validated with existing studies. The drag coefficient, Cd, lift coefficient, Cl and the Strouhal number, St, as well as vorticity contours, velocity contours, and pressure contours were examined. Vortex shedding behind the shrouded cylinders was observed to be suppressed and delayed farther downstream with increasing gap ratio. The effect was significant for spacing ratio greater than 2.0. The effect of hole types: uniform and non-uniform holes, was also effective at these spacing ratios for the chosen Reynolds number of 200. Specifically, a spacing ratio of 1.2 enhanced further the vortex intensity and should be avoided.

In this paper laminar forced convection associated with the cross-flow of micropolar fluid over a horizontal heated circular cylinder is investigated. The conservation equations of mass, linear momentum, angular momentum and energy are solved to give the details of flow and thermal fields. The flow and thermal fields are mainly influenced by Reynolds number, Prandtl number and material parameters of micropolar fluid. The Reynolds number is considered up to 200 while the Prandtl number is fixed at 0.7. The dimensionless vortex viscosity is the only material parameter considered in this study and is selected in the range from 0 to 5. The study has shown that generally the mean heat transfer decreases as the vortex viscosity increases. The results have also shown that both the natural frequency of vortex shedding and the amplitude of oscillating lift force experience clear reduction as the vortex viscosity increases. Moreover, the study showed that there is a threshold value for vortex viscosity above which the flow over the cylinder never responds to perturbation and stays symmetric without vortex shedding. Regarding drag coefficient, the results have revealed that within the selected range of controlling parameters the drag coefficient does not show a clear trend as the vortex viscosity increases.

In the present work, two dimensional flow simulations have been performed to study the effect of tangential blowing on the drag force for the case of flow around a circular cylinder only at Reynolds number (Re) 200. Blowing ports have been placed symmetrically with respect to the horizontal flow axis. The effect of blowing on the boundary layer has been studied with respect to the intensity of blowing as well as port position of blowing. For a particular intensity of blowing, oscillations of the front stagnation point and the separation point was studied. It was found that oscillation frequencies were identical with that of lift coefficient. It was also observed that with the increase of the intensity of the blowing the position of the separation point shifts downstream (separation delay)thus the wake becomes narrower resulting the decrease of drag. Strouhal number was found to increase with the intensity of blowing. It was observed that the Strouhal number as well as the position of the separation point is influenced by the position of the blowing port. Although, for a significant range of the blowing port positions the Strouhal number is observed to be constant. Drag was found to be influenced by the position of the blowing ports. Pressure drag was found to be more significant. Thus total drag is influenced primarily by the pressure drag. It was observed that in the range of 40° to about 110° for the position of the blowing port drag decreased. But beyond 110° it increased again.

Vortex-induced vibration is natural phenomena where an object is exposed to moving fluid caused vibration of the object. Vortex-induced vibration occurred due to vortex shedding behind the object. One of the offshore structures that experience this vortex-induced vibration is riser. The riser experience vortex-induced vibration due to vortex shedding caused by external load which is sea current. The effect of this vortex shedding to the riser is fatigue damage. Vortex-induced vibration of riser becomes the main concern in oil and gas industry since there will be a lots of money to be invested for the installation and maintenance of the riser. The previous studies of this vortex-induced vibration have been conducted by experimental method and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method in order to predict the vortex shedding behaviour behind the riser body for the determination of way to improve the riser design. This thesis represented the analysis of vortex induced vibration of rigid riser in two-dimensional. The analysis is conducted using Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations at Reynolds number at 40, 200, 1000, and 1500. The simulations were performed using Spalart-Allmaras turbulent model to solve the transport equation of turbulent viscosity. The simulations results at Reynolds number 40 and 200 is compared with the other studies for the validation of the simulation, then further simulations were conducted at Reynolds number of 1000 and 1500. The coefficient of lift and drag were obtained from the simulations. The comparison of lift and drag coefficient between the simulation results in this study and experiment results from the other studies showed good agreement. Besides that, the in-line vibration and cross-flow vibration at different Reynolds number were also investigated. The drag coefficient obtained from the simulation results remain unchanged as the Reynolds number increased from 200 to 1500. The lift coefficient obtained from the simulations increased as the Reynolds number increased from 40 to 1500.

The flow around a circular cylinder has been examined over the Reynolds number range 105 to 7·5 × 105, Reynolds number being based on cylinder diameter. Narrow-band vortex shedding has been observed up to a Reynolds number of 5·5 × 105, i.e. well into the critical régime. At this Reynolds number the Strouhal number reached the unusually high value of 0·46. Spectra of the velocity fluctuations measured in the wake are presented for several values of Reynolds number.

The oscillating lift and drag on circular cylinders are determined from measurements of the fluctuating pressure on the cylinder surface in the range of Reynolds number from 4 × 103 to just above 105.The magnitude of the r.m.s. lift coefficient has a maximum of about 0.8 at a Reynolds number of 7 × 104 and falls to about 0.01 at a Reynolds number of 4 × 103. The fluctuating component of the drag was determined for Reynolds numbers greater than 2 × 104 and was found to be an order of magnitude smaller than the lift.
