The popular and widely reported lithium-ion battery model is the equivalent circuit model (ECM). The suitable ECM structure and matched model parameters are equally important for the state-of-charge (SOC) estimation algorithm. This paper focuses on high-accuracy models and the estimation algorithm with high robustness and accuracy in practical application. Firstly, five ECMs and five parameter identification approaches are compared under the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) working condition in the whole SOC area, and the most appropriate model structure and its parameters are determined to improve model accuracy. Based on this, a multi-model and multi-algorithm (MM-MA) method, considering the SOC distribution area, is proposed. The experimental results show that this method can effectively improve the model accuracy. Secondly, a fuzzy fusion SOC estimation algorithm, based on the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and ampere-hour counting (AH) method, is proposed. The fuzzy fusion algorithm takes advantage of the advantages of EKF, and AH avoids the weaknesses. Six case studies show that the SOC estimation result can hold the satisfactory accuracy even when large sensor and model errors exist.

In this paper, a novel model parameter identification method and a state-of-charge (SOC) estimator for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are proposed to improve the global accuracy of SOC estimation in the all SOC range (0–100%). Firstly, a subregion optimization method based on particle swarm optimization is developed to find the optimal model parameters of LIBs in each subregion, and the optimal number of subregions is investigated from the perspective of accuracy and computation time. Then, to solve the problem of a low accuracy of SOC estimation caused by large model error in the low SOC range, an improved extended Kalman filter (IEKF) algorithm with variable noise covariance is proposed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed methods are verified by experiments on two kinds of batteries under three working cycles, and case studies show that the proposed IEKF has better accuracy and robustness than the traditional extended Kalman filter (EKF) in the all SOC range.

With the development of new energy vehicle technology, battery management systems used to monitor the state of the battery have been widely researched. The accuracy of the battery status assessment to a great extent depends on the accuracy of the battery model parameters. This paper proposes an improved method for parameter identification and state-of-charge (SOC) estimation for lithium-ion batteries. Using a two-order equivalent circuit model, the battery model is divided into two parts based on fast dynamics and slow dynamics. The recursive least squares method is used to identify parameters of the battery, and then the SOC and the open-circuit voltage of the model is estimated with the extended Kalman filter. The two-module voltages are calculated using estimated open circuit voltage and initial parameters, and model parameters are constantly updated during iteration. The proposed method can be used to estimate the parameters and the SOC in real time, which does not need to know the state of SOC and the value of open circuit voltage in advance. The method is tested using data from dynamic stress tests, the root means squared error of the accuracy of the prediction model is about 0.01 V, and the average SOC estimation error is 0.0139. Results indicate that the method has higher accuracy in offline parameter identification and online state estimation than traditional recursive least squares methods.

As the core component of electric vehicle, lithium-ion battery needs to adopt effective battery management method to prolong battery life and improve the reliability and safety. The accurate estimation of the battery SOC can be used to prevent the battery over charge and over discharge, reduce damage to the battery and improve battery performance, which plays a vital role in the battery management system. The study of battery SOC estimation mainly focused on the battery model construction and SOC estimation algorithm. Aiming at the problem that the state of charge (SOC) of electric vehicle is difficult to be accurately estimated under complex operating conditions, based on the parameter identification of the equivalent circuit of a ternary polymer lithium-ion battery, an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) algorithm was used to estimate the SOC of the ternary polymer lithium-ion battery. Simulation and experimental results show that the estimation of SOC can be carried out by using the EKF algorithm under the conditions of China Passenger Car Condition (Chinacar) and new European driving cycle (NEDC) Compared with the coulomb counting method, the average error of SOC estimation can be realized is 1.042% and 1.138% respectively, the maximum error within 4%. Application of this algorithm to achieve SOC estimation has good robustness and convergence

AbstractAn accurate state of charge (SOC) estimation in battery management systems (BMS) is of crucial importance to guarantee the safe and effective operation of automotive batteries. However, the BMS consistently suffers from inaccuracy of SOC estimation. Herein, we propose a SOC estimation approach with both high accuracy and robustness based on an improved extended Kalman filter (IEKF). An equivalent circuit model is established, and the simulated annealing-particle swarm optimization (SA-PSO) algorithm is used for offline parameter identification. Furthermore, improvements have been made with noise adaptation, a fading filter and a linear-nonlinear filtering based on the traditional EKF method, and rigorous mathematical proof has been carried out accordingly. To deal with model mismatch, online parameter identification is achieved by a dual Kalman filter. Finally, various experiments are performed to validate the proposed IEKF. Experimental results show that the IEKF algorithm can reduce the error to 2.94% under dynamic stress test conditions, and robustness analysis is verified with noise interference, hence demonstrating its practicability for extending to state estimation of battery packs applied in real-world operating conditions.

Many battery state of charge (SOC) estimation methods have been studied for decades; however, it is still difficult to precisely estimate SOC because it is nonlinear and affected by many factors, including the battery state and charge–discharge conditions. The extended Kalman filter (EKF) is generally used for SOC estimation, however its accuracy can decrease owing to the uncertain and inaccurate parameters of battery models and various factors with different time scales affecting the SOC. Herein, a SOC estimation method based on the EKF is proposed to obtain robust accuracy, in which the errors are compensated by a long short-term memory (LSTM) network. The proposed approach trains the errors of the EKF results, and the accurate SOC is estimated by applying calibration values corresponding to the condition of the battery and its load profiles with the help of LSTM. Furthermore, a multi-LSTM structure is implemented, and it adopts the ensemble average to guarantee estimation accuracy. SOC estimation with a root mean square error of less than 1% was found to be close to the actual SOC calculated by coulomb counting. Moreover, once the EKF model was established and the network trained, it was possible to predict the SOC online.

Abstract Accurate estimation of battery state of charge (SOC) is the basis of battery management system. the fractional order theory is introduced into the second-order resistance-capacitance (RC)model of lithium battery and adaptive genetic algorithm is used to identify the parameters of the second-order RC model based on fractional order. Considering the changes of internal resistance and battery aging during battery discharge, the battery health state (SOH) is estimated based on unscented Kalman filter (UKF), and the values of internal resistance and maximum capacity of the battery are obtained. Finally, a novel estimation algorithm of lithium battery SOC based on SOH and fractional order adaptive extended Kalman filter (FOAEKF) is proposed. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, an experimental system is set up and the proposed method is compared with the existing SOC estimation algorithms. The experimental results show that the proposed method has higher estimation accuracy, with the average error lower than 1% and the maximum error lower than 2%.

This paper analyses the application of Kalman Filter (KF) in Power Lithium-ion Battery SOC (State of Charge) estimation algorithm. After the analysis of two popular SOC estimate algorithm based on KF, an improved KF-SOC algorithm is proposed. The main advance of this improved algorithm is the introduction of parameter-rectification. The parameter-rectification which based on analysis of battery electrochemical principle and battery terminal voltage response curve is also achieved by KF. The main algorithm of improved KF-SOC is generated by the combination of KF and Ampere-hour integrated method. Later the simulations proved the new algorithm with high accuracy.
