To investigate the effect of constructional measures (including horizontal and vertical stiffeners, rebar cages, embedded steel tubes, and cavity welded steel plates) under high axial load ratios on the seismic performance of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns, quasi-static tests for six large-scale CFST columns with various constructional measures are performed. All specimens are subjected to identical axial forces. The failure mode, hysteresis characteristics, bearing capacity, stiffness degradation, ductility, and energy dissipation of specimens are analyzed. The study shows that the horizontal stiffener delays the occurrence and severity of column base buckling, the vertical stiffener improves the bending resistance capacity and initial stiffness of the member, the rebar cage improves the ductility, and the embedded circular steel tube significantly improves the member’s bearing capacity, ductility, and energy dissipation. When an internal circular steel tube and cavity welded steel plate are applied in tandem, the section steel ratio increases by 4.42% and the bearing capacity improves by 42.72%. A finite element model is created to verify test results, and simulation results match the test results well.

Abstract: 7 square steel tubular columns were tested to discuss the ultimate axial bearing capacity, ductility performance and the steel consumption under stiffened by steel belts and binding bars of different cross-sections. Test results indicate that only by increasing fewer amounts of steel usage, stiffened square CFST columns with binding bars can not only improve the overall effects of restraint and alleviate regional local buckling between the binding bars, but also improve the bearing capacity of concrete filled square steel tubular columns. The utility benefits and the economical benefit is considerable, deserving extensive use.

With the reinforcement project of a heavy-duty concrete-encased concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) column as the background, the mechanism of column reinforcement with supporting beams is proposed. The key mechanisms include the following: (1) designing the upper and lower corbel-shaped temporary support columns, (2) crack repairing the inner steel pipe using patch-shaped steel plates, and (3) replacing microwound concrete inside the steel pipe, which are all innovative and effective methods. Moreover, a system is developed for monitoring the safety during the reinforcement process and recovering the bearing capacity of the concrete-encased CFST column. The monitoring results indicate that the load conversion process of the temporary support columns lasts for 50 days, that the sum of the axial forces of the four supporting columns is 7,966.0 kN, accounting for 65% of the standard load, and that during the whole process, the structural components are safe and reliable. Finally, the construction simulation is in agreement with the field test results, which proves that the construction simulation developed based on the theory of slow time-dependent mechanics and the method of static nonlinear analysis is accurate.

Hollow rectangular reinforced concrete piers have been widely used in tall-column and long-span bridges. Two large-scale experimental models of the hollow reinforced concrete bridge piers were built to study the seismic performance of the piers subjected to biaxial bending under constant axial load. The objective is to evaluate seismic performances of the model piers and the factors affecting the seismic performance of the model piers by comparing their failure mechanism, bearing capacity, ductility, energy dissipation capacity, etc. The results show that the hollow rectangular specimen experienced flexural failure with plastic hinges formed at the bottom of the piers when subjected to combined axial load and biaxial bending. The bearing capacity of the specimen increases greatly and the ductility decrease insignificantly as the axial compression ratio increases from 0.1 to 0.2, while the energy dissipation capacity is increased by 121.8%, however, the absolute value of total cumulative hysteretic energy is not magnificent.

This paper investigates the axial behavior of slender reinforced concrete (RC) columns strengthened with concrete filled steel tube (CFST) jacketing technique. It is realized by pouring self-compacting concrete (SCC) into the gap between inner original slender RC columns and outer steel tubes. Nine specimens were prepared and tested to failure under axial compression: a control specimen without strengthening and eight specimens with heights ranging between 1240 and 2140 mm strengthened with CFST jacketing. Experimental variables included four different length-to-diameter (L/D) ratios, three different diameter-to-thickness (D/t) ratios, and three different SCC strengths. The experimental results showed that the outer steel tube provided confinement to the SCC and original slender RC columns and thus effectively improved the behavior of slender RC columns. The failure mode of slender RC columns was changed from brittle failure (concrete peel-off) into ductile failure (global bending) after strengthening. And, the load-bearing capacity, material utilization, and ductility of slender RC columns were significantly enhanced. The strengthening effect of CFST jacketing decreased with the increase of L/D ratio and D/t ratio but showed little variation with higher SCC strength. An existing expression of load-bearing capacity for traditional CFST columns was extended to propose a formula for the load-bearing capacity of CFST jacketed columns, and the predictions showed good agreement with the experimental results.

Local buckling in steel tubes was observed to be capable of reducing the ultimate loads of thin-walled concrete-filled steel-tube (CFST) columns under axial compression. To strengthen the steel tubes, steel bars were proposed in this paper to be used as stiffeners fixed onto the tubes. Static-loading tests were conducted to study the compression behavior of square thin-walled CFST columns with steel bar stiffeners placed inside or outside the tube. The effect and feasibility of steel bar stiffeners were studied through the analysis of failure mode, load–displacement relationship, ultimate load, ductility, and local buckling. Different setting methods of steel bars were compared as well. The results showed that steel-bar stiffeners proposed in this paper can be effective in delaying local buckling as well as increasing the bearing capacity of the columns, but will decrease the ductility of the columns. In order to obtain a higher bearing capacity of columns, steel bars with low stiffness should be placed inside and steel bars with high stiffness should be placed outside of the steel tubes. The study is helpful in providing reference to the popularization and application of this new structural measure to avoid or delay the local buckling of thin-walled CFST columns.

Two columns of thin-walled concrete-filled steel tubes (CFSTs), in which tube seams are connected by self-tapping screws, are axial compression tested and FEM simulated; the influence of local buckling on the column compression bearing capacity is discussed. Failure modes of square thin-wall CFST columns are, first, steel tube plate buckling and then the collapse of steel and concrete in some corner edge areas. Interaction between concrete and steel makes the column continue to withstand higher forces after buckling appears. A large deflection analysis for tube elastic buckling reflects that equivalent uniform stress of the steel plate in the buckling area can reach yield stress and that steel can supply enough designing stress. Aiming at failure modes of square thin-walled CFST columns, a B-type section is proposed as an improvement scheme. Comparing the analysis results, the B-type section can address both the problems of corner collapse and steel plate buckling. This new type section can better make full use of the stress of the concrete material and the steel material; this type section can also increase the compression bearing capacity of the column.

This paper studies the effect of high-strength steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) on the axial compression behavior of rectangular-sectional SFRC-filled steel tube columns. The purpose is to improve the integrated bearing capacity of these composite columns. Nine rectangular-sectional SFRC-filled steel tube columns and one normal concrete-filled steel tube column were designed and tested under axial loading to failure. The compressive strength of concrete, the volume fraction of steel fiber, the type of internal longitudinal stiffener and the spacing of circular holes in perfobond rib were considered as the main parameters. The failure modes, axial load-deformation curves, energy dissipation capacity, axial bearing capacity, and ductility index are presented. The results identified that steel fiber delayed the local buckling of steel tube and increased the ductility and energy dissipation capacity of the columns when the volume fraction of steel fiber was not less than 0.8%. The longitudinal internal stiffening ribs and their type changed the failure modes of the local buckling of steel tube, and perfobond ribs increased the ductility and energy dissipation capacity to some degree. The compressive strength of SFRC failed to change the failure modes, but had a significant impact on the energy dissipation capacity, bearing capacity, and ductility. The predictive formulas for the bearing capacity and ductility index of rectangular-sectional SFRC-filled steel tube columns are proposed to be used in engineering practice.

In this study, two types of novel box connections were developed to connect precast concrete (PC) columns and to ensure load transfer integrity. Cyclic loading tests were conducted to investigate the seismic behavior of the PC columns with proposed connections as well as the feasibility and reliability of novel box connections. The failure mode, hysteretic behavior, bearing capacity, ductility, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation were obtained and discussed. The test results indicated that the all PC columns exhibited the ductile flexural failure mode and that the proposed connections could transfer the force effectively. The adoption of novel box connections could improve the deformation capacity and energy dissipation capacity of PC columns. A higher axial compression ratio could enhance the bearing capacity of PC column with proposed connection but would significantly deteriorate the ductility and energy dissipation capacity. Finite element models were developed and the feasibility of the models was verified by the comparison with the test results.

In this paper, in order to investigate the shear mechanism and shear capacity of framework joints of steel-reinforced concrete-filled circular steel tube (SRCFCST), a numerical finite element model reflecting the mechanical behavior of framework joints of SRCFCST column-reinforced concrete beam is established through simulating concrete by the damage plastic constitutive model and simulating steel by the ideal elastic-plastic material, and its effectiveness is verified by experimental data. On account of uniform distribution of circular steel reinforced around the section and without definite flange and web, the shear mechanism of the framework joints of SRCFCST is analyzed on the basis of equivalent circular steel tube (CST) to the rectangular steel tube. The method for calculating the superposed shear bearing capacities of the joint core area is proposed, which is composed of four parts, i.e., concrete inside tube, concrete outside tube, hooping and steel-reinforced web; and the corresponding formulas for calculating shear bearing capacity are established. The comparative analysis of joints’ shear bearing capacity indicates that the results of numerical simulation and shear bearing capacity formulas coincide well with the experimental values, which can provide reference for the nonlinear analysis and engineering design of similar joints.
