For gait phase estimation, time-series data of lower-limb motion can be segmented according to time windows. Time-domain features can then be calculated from the signal enclosed in a time window. A set of time-domain features is used for gait phase estimation. In this approach, the components of the feature set and the length of the time window are influential parameters for gait phase estimation. However, optimal parameter values, which determine a feature set and its values, can vary across subjects. Previously, these parameters were determined empirically, which led to a degraded estimation performance. To address this problem, this paper proposes a new feature extraction approach. Specifically, the components of the feature set are selected using a binary genetic algorithm, and the length of the time window is determined through Bayesian optimization. In this approach, the two optimization techniques are integrated to conduct a dual optimization task. The proposed method is validated using data from five walking and five running motions. For walking, the proposed approach reduced the gait phase estimation error from 1.284% to 0.910%, while for running, the error decreased from 1.997% to 1.484%.

Software sensors are playing an increasingly important role in current vehicle development. Such soft sensors can be based on both physical modeling and data-based modeling. Data-driven modeling is based on building a model purely on captured data which means that no system knowledge is required for the application. At the same time, hyperparameters have a particularly large influence on the quality of the model. These parameters influence the architecture and the training process of the machine learning algorithm. This paper deals with the comparison of different hyperparameter optimization methods for the design of a roll angle estimator based on an artificial neural network. The comparison is drawn based on a pre-generated simulation data set created with ISO standard driving maneuvers. Four different optimization methods are used for the comparison. Random Search and Hyperband are two similar methods based purely on randomness, whereas Bayesian Optimization and the genetic algorithm are knowledge-based methods, i.e., they process information from previous iterations. The objective function for all optimization methods consists of the root mean square error of the training process and the reference data generated in the simulation. To guarantee a meaningful result, k-fold cross-validation is integrated for the training process. Finally, all methods are applied to the predefined parameter space. It is shown that the knowledge-based methods lead to better results. In particular, the Genetic Algorithm leads to promising solutions in this application.

This research aims to analyse the acceleration of population growth based on gender in West Nusa Tenggara Province (NTB) using the Forecasting system by constructing the winter's method in the shape of the Multiple Forecasting System (G-MFS) based on Matlab by calculating the period indicator for accuracy to find time series data in the year 2020-2029. At the simulation stage, researchers used the population and gender ratio data in NTB Province in 2009-2019. The method used in conducting research is to use the winter's method. The evaluation of Forecasting results is done by calculating the average error value using the Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) method. From this study obtained the most optimal parameter value on male data namely ʌ, β and γ sequential values of 0.9, 0.5 and 0.9 while in female data, the value of ʌ, β and γ respectively, 0.2, 0.1 and 0.5. Then with the value of the parameter obtained MAPE value in male data of 1.7785% and in female data of 0.89034%.

With an ageing society comes the increased prevalence of gait disorders. The restriction of mobility leads to a considerable reduction in the quality of life, because associated falls increase morbidity and mortality. Consideration of gait analysis data often alters surgical recommendations. For that reason, the early and systematic diagnostic treatment of gait disorders can spare a lot of suffering. As modern gait analysis systems are, in most cases, still very costly, many patients are not privileged enough to have access to comparable therapies. Low-cost systems such as inertial measurement units (IMUs) still pose major challenges, but offer possibilities for automatic real-time motion analysis. In this paper, we present a new approach to reliably detect human gait phases, using IMUs and machine learning methods. This approach should form the foundation of a new medical device to be used for gait analysis. A model is presented combining deep 2D-convolutional and LSTM networks to perform a classification task; it predicts the current gait phase with an accuracy of over 92% on an unseen subject, differentiating between five different phases. In the course of the paper, different approaches to optimize the performance of the model are presented and evaluated.

Anomaly detection techniques can extract a wealth of information about unusual events. Unfortunately, these methods yield an abundance of findings that are not of interest, obscuring relevant anomalies. In this work, we improve upon traditional anomaly detection methods by introducing Isudra, an Indirectly Supervised Detector of Relevant Anomalies from time series data. Isudra employs Bayesian optimization to select time scales, features, base detector algorithms, and algorithm hyperparameters that increase true positive and decrease false positive detection. This optimization is driven by a small amount of example anomalies, driving an indirectly supervised approach to anomaly detection. Additionally, we enhance the approach by introducing a warm-start method that reduces optimization time between similar problems. We validate the feasibility of Isudra to detect clinically relevant behavior anomalies from over 2M sensor readings collected in five smart homes, reflecting 26 health events. Results indicate that indirectly supervised anomaly detection outperforms both supervised and unsupervised algorithms at detecting instances of health-related anomalies such as falls, nocturia, depression, and weakness.

In this paper, an optimization procedure for path generation synthesis of the slider-crank mechanism will be presented. The proposed approach is based on a hybrid strategy, mixing local and global optimization techniques. Regarding the local optimization scheme, based on the null gradient condition, a novel methodology to solve the resulting non-linear equations is developed. The solving procedure consists of decoupling two subsystems of equations which can be solved separately and following an iterative process. In relation to the global technique, a multi-start method based on a genetic algorithm is implemented. The fitness function incorporated in the genetic algorithm will take as arguments the set of dimensional parameters of the slider-crank mechanism. Several illustrative examples will prove the validity of the proposed optimization methodology, in some cases achieving an even better result compared to mechanisms with a higher number of dimensional parameters, such as the four-bar mechanism or the Watt’s mechanism.

The hydro generation scheduling problem has a unit commitment sub-problem which deals with start-up/shut-down costs related hydropower units. Hydro power is the only renewable energy source for many countries, so there is a need to find better methods which give optimal hydro scheduling. In this paper, the different optimization techniques like lagrange relaxation, augmented lagrange relaxation, mixed integer programming methods, heuristic methods like genetic algorithm, fuzzy logics, nonlinear approach, stochastic programming and dynamic programming techniques are discussed. The lagrange relaxation approach deals with constraints of pumped storage hydro plants and gives efficient results. Dynamic programming handles simple constraints and it is easily adaptable but its major drawback is curse of dimensionality. However, the mixed integer nonlinear programming, mixed integer linear programming, sequential lagrange and non-linear approach deals with network constraints and head sensitive cascaded hydropower plants. The stochastic programming, fuzzy logics and simulated annealing is helpful in satisfying the ramping rate, spinning reserve and power balance constraints. Genetic algorithm has the ability to obtain the results in a short interval. Fuzzy logic never needs a mathematical formulation but it is very complex. Future work is also suggested.
