The influence of roll diameter on the strain distribution, shape change, contact pressure, and damage value of a workpiece was investigated during wire flat rolling to control the material properties of the flattened wire. The flattened wires fabricated by the four different rolls were compared using finite element analysis. The strain inhomogeneity of the flat-rolled wire increased with the roll diameter; thus, the macroscopic shear bands were strengthened as the roll diameter increased during wire flat rolling. The contact width and lateral spreading of the flattened wire increased with the roll diameter; therefore, the reduction in area decreased with the roll diameter. The contour of the normal contact pressure on the wire surface exhibited a similar pattern regardless of the roll diameter. The contact pressure showed higher values at the entry, edge, and exit zones in the contact area. The distribution of the damage value varied with the roll diameter. The free surface region tended to have the peak damage value during the process; however, the center region exhibited the maximum damage value with the roll diameter. From the perspective of the damage value, the optimum roll diameter was in existence during wire flat rolling. The underlying cause of the different strain distributions, shape changes, and damage values of the flat-rolled wire was the different contact lengths originating from the different roll diameters during wire flat rolling.

Abstract During vehicle braking and cornering, the tire's footprint region may see high normal contact pressures and in-plane shear stresses. The corresponding resultant forces and moments are transferred to the wheel. The optimal design of the tire bead area and the wheel requires a detailed knowledge of the contact pressure and shear stress distributions at the tire/rim interface. In this study, the forces and moments obtained from the simulation of a vehicle in stationary braking/cornering conditions are applied to a quasi-static braking/cornering tire finite element model. Detailed contact pressure and shear stress distributions at the tire/rim interface are computed for heavy braking and cornering maneuvers.

Based on the finite element method, the elastic contact problem of a layered semi-infinite solid compressed by a rigid surface is solved numerically. The case of a surface layer stiffer than the substrate is considered, and general solutions for the subsurface stress and deformation fields are presented for relatively thin, intermediate, and thick layers. Additionally, the stresses in a compressed homogeneous half-space having the substrate properties have been obtained for comparison. The significance of the layer thickness relative to the size of the half-contact width, the friction coefficient at the contact zone, and the stiffness of the layer are critically examined and the conditions under which the layer is beneficial are addressed. Furthermore, the mechanisms of microcrack initiation at the layer surface or interface, layer debonding, and onset of plastic flow in the layered solid are explained qualitatively, in light of the governing stresses, and the regimes of their prevalence are approximately determined.

In multi-wire flat rolling process, the error of the rolled wires in thickness was due to the roller deflection and the spring back of the rolled wire. In order to control the dimension accuracy, to know the quantity of thickness error precisely is very important. In this study, the DEFORM-3D finite element analysis software was used to simulate the multi-wire flat rolling process with the elastic-plastic deformation model, supposed the rollers as elastic body and the wires as elastic-plastic body through the rolling process. From the computer simulation results, it can be found that, the deflection of roller has the biggest effect on the dimension accuracy of wire. To control the deflection value of roller, besides roller material and the roller length, the choice of roller diameter is also very important.

As lined, higher transmission ratio drives system will have uneven stresses in the root region of the pinion and wheel. To enrich this agility of uneven stresses in normal-contact ratio (NCR) gearing system, an enhanced system is desirable to be industrialized. To attain this objective, it is proposed to put on the idea of modifying the correction factor in such a manner that the bending strength of the gearing system is improved. In this work, the correction factor is modified in such a way that the stress in the root region is equalized between the pinion and wheel. This equalization of stresses is carried out by providing a correction factor in three circumstances: in pinion; wheel and both the pinion and the wheel. Henceforth performances of this S+, S0 and S- drives are evaluated in finite element analysis (FEA) and compared for balanced root stresses in parallel shaft spur gearing systems. It is seen that the outcomes gained from the modified drive have enhanced performance than the standard drive.

In the process of oil and gas well production, tubing connection stand the axial alternating load during open well, shut well and fluid flow. In order to know premium connection seal ability under the loading, two types of P110 88.9mmx6.45mm premium tubing connections which called A connection and B connection are performed with finite element analysis, in which contact pressures and their the regularities distribution on sealing surface are analyzed. The results show that with the increasing of cycle number, the maximum contact pressures on sealing surface of both A connection and B connection are decreased. The decreasing of the maximum contact pressures on B connection is greater than those on A connection. With the increasing of cycle number of axial alternating compression load, the maximum contact pressure on sealing surface of A connection is decreased, and the maximum contact pressure on sealing surface of B connection remains constant. Compared the result, it shows that the seal ability of A connection is better than B connection under axial alternating tension load, while the seal ability of B connection is better than type A connection under axial alternating compression load.

AbstractContact of random machined two-process steel textures with a smooth, flat steel surface is discussed in this paper. Two-process surfaces were machined by vapour blasting followed by lapping. An elastic-plastic contact model was applied, assuming distributed radius of asperities. Calculation procedures allowed the mean surface separation, contact pressure, and area fraction to be computed as functions of sampling intervals. Parameters characterizing the summits important in contact mechanics were calculated for different sampling intervals. Plasticity index of two-process textures was calculated using the modified procedure. It was found that the influence of sampling interval on normal contact depended on the rough surface ability to plastic deformation. The use of a traditional method of calculation overestimated the plasticity index. Peaks from plateau surface region governed contact characteristics of two-process surfaces.

The most important factor for the leakage problem of pipe flange connections is considered to be contact pressure distribution at the gasket bearing surface in service. In this study, the mechanical behaviors of the pipe flange connection are evaluated using FEM as a three-dimensional contact problem, in which a gasket is modeled as a nonlinear one-dimensional gasket element. Here, the contact pressure distributions at the gasket bearing surface and the variations of the bolt stress are estimated under uniform bolt preloads or nonuniform ones due to the elastic interaction during bolting up. The numerical procedure proposed here can successively deal with the processes of bolt-up, applying inner pressure and applying bending moment. The analytical objects are pipe flanges specified in JIS B 2238 with compressed asbestos sheet gaskets being inserted. The validity of the numerical method is ascertained by experiment.
