Electropolishing is one of the most widely applied metal polishing techniques for passivating and deburring metal parts. Copper is often used as cathode electrode for electropolishing due to its low electrical resistance and low flow values. However, during the electropolishing process, elution of the cathode electrode caused by the electrolyte and remaining oxygen gas also causes critical water pollution and inhibits electropolishing efficiency. Therefore, to achieve an efficient and eco-friendly electropolishing process, development of a highly corrosion resistive and conductive electrode is necessary. We developed a highly oriented graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) electrode that minimizes water pollution in the electropolishing process. We functionalized GNP by a one-step mass-productive ball-milling process and non-covalent melamine functionalization. Melamine is an effective amphiphilic molecule that enhances dispersibility and nematic liquid crystal phase transformation of GNP. The functionalization mechanism and the material interaction were confirmed by Raman spectroscopy after high-speed shear printing. After the electropolishing process by melamine-functionalized GNP electrodes, 304 stainless steel samples were noticeably polished as copper electrodes and elution of carbon was over 50 times less than was the case when using copper electrodes. This electropolishing performance of a highly oriented GNP electrode indicates that melamine-functionalized GNP has great potential for eco-friendly electropolishing applications.

Background:Stenoloma chusanum (L.) Ching is a Chinese traditional medicinal fern with high total flavonoid and total phenolic content. Traditionally, phenolic compounds were separated by using column chromatography, which is relatively inefficient.

Objective: This study aims to use an efficient method to separate natural products from S. chusanum by Medium-Pressure Liquid Chromatography (MPLC) and High-Speed Counter-Current Chromatography (HSCCC).Methods:In the present research, firstly, a sample (2.5 g) from the dichloromethane extract of S. chusanum was separated by MPLC. Next, fraction P5 was purified by HSCCC with a two-phase solvent system composed of hexane-ethyl acetate-methanol-water (HEMWat) at a volume ratio of 2:4:1:4 (v/v/v/v).

Result: Four phenolic acids were obtained and their structures were identified by means of NMR and ESI-mass analysis. They were identified as: 1) protocatechuic acid (34 mg, purity 90.1%), 2) syringic acid (66 mg, purity 99.0%), 3) p-hydroxybenzoic acid (5 mg, purity 91.2%) and 4) vanillic acid (6 mg, purity 99.3%).Conclusion:The combination of MPLC and HSCCC is a high-efficiency separation method for natural products. This is the first report with regard to the separation of four phenolic acids in one step by MPLC and HSCCC from S. chusanum (L.) Ching.

Cavities are typical features in aeronautical structural parts and molds. For high-speed milling of multi-cavity parts, a reasonable processing sequence planning can significantly affect the machining accuracy and efficiency. This paper proposes an improved continuous peripheral milling method for multi-cavity based on ant colony optimization algorithm (ACO). Firstly, by analyzing the mathematical model of cavity corner milling process, the geometric center of the corner is selected as the initial tool feed position. Subsequently, the tool path is globally optimized through ant colony dissemination and pheromone perception for path solution of multi-cavity milling. With the advantages of ant colony parallel search and pheromone positive feedback, the searching efficiency of the global shortest processing path is effectively improved. Finally, the milling programming of an aeronautical structural part is taken as a sample to verify the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. Compared with zigzag milling and genetic algorithm (GA)-based peripheral milling modes in the computer aided manufacturing (CAM) software, the results show that the ACO-based methodology can shorten the milling time of a sample part by more than 13%.

Improving the cutting efficiency is the major factor for improving the processing of nickel-based alloys. The novelty of this research is the calibrated SiAlON ceramic tool dry milling nickel-based alloy process. Firstly, the nickel-based alloy dry milling process was analyzed through the finite element method, and the required milling force and temperature were deduced. Then, several dry milling experiments were conducted with the milling temperature, and the milling force was monitored. The change in cutting speeds was from 400 m/min to 700 m/min. Experimental results verified the reduction of the dry milling force hypothesized by the simulation. The experiment also indicated that with a cut depth of 0.3 mm, cut width of 6 mm, and feed per tooth of 0.03 mm/z, when milling speed exceeded 527.52 m/min, the milling force began to decrease, and the milling temperature exceeded the nickel-based alloy softening temperature. This indicated that easy cutting could be realized under high-speed dry milling conditions. The interpolation curve about average temperature and average milling forces showed similarity to the tensile strength reduction with the rise of temperature.

In this study, effect of machining parameters and wear mechanism in milling process of mold steel AISI-P20 and AISI-1050, using 10 mm twin flute type end mill diameter. The experimental results found that characteristics of milling surfaces and wear of the mill end were directly influenced by changes of parameters for all test conditions. As a result, the quality of milling surfaces also changed. However, mould steels which had the good quality surface is AISI-1050, with roughnesses of 2.120 μm. Quality milling surfaces were milled by using the most suitable parameter feed rate of 45 mm/min, a spindle speed of 637 rpm and a cut depth level of 3 mm, for both grades. Moreover, material removal rate and duration of the milling process, the milling end mills affect wear of the edge in every bite when the feed rate is low, high speed and level depth of cut at least. It was found that limited wear less will affect the surface roughness (Ra) represents the good quality surface.

Explosive loading techniques are applied to expand tubular cylinders, spherical shells and rings of 304 stainless steel to fragmentation, and the effects of wall thicknesses, explosive driver diameters and the constant proportionality of the in-plane biaxial stretching rates are investigated on the deformation and fracture behavior of three basic structures experimentally and numerically. In the cylinder tests, the driver is a column of high explosive PETN, inserted coaxially into the bore of a cylinder and initiated by exploding a fine wire bundle at the column axis using a discharge current from a high-voltage capacitor bank. In case of the ring tests, ring specimens are placed onto a single cylinder filled with the PETN as a expansion driver, and for sphere tests, specimens filled with the PETN are also initiated by exploding a fine copper wire line with small length located at the central point. Two types of experiments are conducted for every specimen and test condition. The first type uses high speed cameras to observe the deformation and crack generation of expanding specimens showing the final maximum in-plane stretching rate of above , and the second uses soft capturing system recovering typically most fragments successfully. The fragments are measured and investigated using a fragmentation model. The effects of test parameters on the deformation and fracture behavior for three types of structures are discussed in need of modified fragmentation model for shell structural elements.

High-speed machining gives much potential for increasing the efficiency of the milling operation, but it requires very careful preparation for the milling process to use this potential. A machining simulator has been developed that can analyse dynamic errors due to tool deflections and machine dynamic behaviour using a three-dimensional solid simulation model. This kind of simulator would be a useful tool to apply in high-speed machining where it is necessary to obtain very well prepared part programs considering dynamic errors as well as geometrical errors. In this short communication, an algorithm will be introduced to estimate the dynamic errors caused by machine dynamic behaviour. Specifically, this algorithm predicts real feed rates and tracking errors considering the limits of numerical controllers and machine tools. The efficiency of the algorithm has been verified through several experiments with various tool paths. In addition, the algorithm has been integrated into the machining simulator. Some results obtained from the machining simulator concerning the estimation of tracking errors will be reported.
