Currently, the seismic designs of reinforced concrete (RC) bridges with tall piers are often accomplished following the ductility-based seismic design method. Though the collapses of the RC bridges with tall piers can be avoided, they are likely to experience major damage and loss of functionality when subjected to strong near-fault ground motions. The objectives of this study are to put forward an innovative design concept of a tall-pier system and its application in tall-pier bridges. The concept of the innovative tall-pier system is derived from the principle of earthquake-resilient structures, and is to improve the seismic performances of the tall-pier bridges under strong near-fault ground motions. The proposed tall-pier system has a box section and is composed of four concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns and energy dissipating mild steel plates (EDMSPs). Trial design of a bridge with the new composite tall-pier system is performed based on a typical continuous rigid frame highway bridge with conventional RC box section tall piers. Both static analysis and nonlinear time history analysis of both the bridges with the new composite tall piers and conventional RC tall piers under the near-fault velocity pulse-type ground motions were conducted in Midas Civil2019 and ABAQUS. The results show that: under the design-based earthquake (DBE), the CFST columns and connecting steel beams remain elastic in the bridge with the new composite tall piers, while the damage is found in the replaceable EDMSPs which help dissipate the seismic input energy. The displacement responses of the new bridge are significantly smaller than those of the conventional bridge under DBE. It is concluded that the bridge with the new composite tall piers is seismic resilient under near-fault ground motions.

This paper focuses on the seismic isolation design of near-fault bridges under the seismic excitations of near-fault ground motions in high-intensity earthquake zones and proposes a combined control system using lead rubber bearings (LRBs) and cable displacement restrainers (CDRs) along with ductility seismic resistance for the reinforced concrete piers. As part of the performance-based seismic design framework, this study provides the quantitative design criteria for multilevel performance-based objectives of a combined control system under conditions of frequent earthquake (E1), design earthquake (medium earthquake), and rare earthquake (E2). Moreover, in this study, a preliminary performance-based seismic isolation design for a near-fault actual highway bridge in high-intensity earthquake zones (basic peak of ground acceleration 0.4 g) was developed. Using nonlinear time-history analysis of the actual bridge under near-fault ground motions, the feasibility of a performance-based design method was validated. Furthermore, to ensure the predicted performance of the isolated bridges during a strong earthquake, a relatively quantitative design in structural details derived from the stirrup ratio of piers, expansion joints gap, supported length of capping beams, and limited vertical displacement response was obtained.

Nonlinear time-history analysis conducted as part of a performance-based seismic design approach often require that the ground motion records are selected and then scaled to a specified level of seismic intensity. In such analyses, besides an adequate structural model, a set of acceleration time-series is needed as the most realistic representation of the seismic action. In this paper, the effects of scaling procedure on seismic demands of steel frames are investigated. To this, two special steel moment-resisting frames with considerable higher mode effects, and two sets of ground motions, including near-fault and far-fault motions are considered. Moreover, three scaling procedures are introduced for performing nonlinear dynamic time-history analysis of structures. Among different demands, lateral roof displacement and interstory drift are selected as seismic demands. The height-wise distribution of demands shows that the inelastic seismic demands of the near-fault pulse-like ground motions differ considerably from those of far-fault ones. These results show that the story drifts are mostly larger for far-fault motions in the upper story levels in comparison to near-fault records and in the lower floors, the reverse is true. Thus, the scaling procedures directly affect the results of seismic demands and choosing different methods would result in varying responses. Moreover, a low-cost and fairly effective procedure is proposed to estimate the target displacement demands of buildings from response-spectrum analyses, considering near-fault effects. The precision of this method is verified by nonlinear time-history analysis results, as the benchmark solution, and acceptable improvements have been achieved.

The seismic response of the base-isolated structure can be reduced significantly in the far-field region compared to the conventional seismic structure. However, near-fault ground motions with velocity pulse may cause the adverse influence on the seismic performance of the base-isolation building, which needs to be investigated deeply. In this paper 6 ground motions with velocity pulse are selected as the input, and the seismic response of a 9 layers conventional seismic RC frame building and comparative base-isolation building with lead-core rubber bearings are obtained by nonlinear time history analysis. The result indicates that base-isolation building with lead-core rubber bearings are of good aseismic performance under the near-fault ground motions with velocity pulse.

<p>The earthquake near Palu, Sulawesi (Indonesia) on September 28, 2018 with a magnitude of M7.4 was caused by a shallow strike-slip of Palu-Koro fault. The earthquake and the subsequent tsunami have caused the collapse of the Ponulele Bridge (Palu IV Bridge). The steel box bowstring arch bridge was located near-fault regions (within 1,5 km from fault line) that have not been identified during the design process. This bridge may have been damaged by the presence of fling-step pulses in the near-fault pulse-type ground motions that increases the damaging potential of such ground motions. This paper presents the failure simulation of the bridge subjected to the near fault pulse type time history with spatial variation ground motions applied on multiple bridge supports. From the simulation, it is concluded that the near fault effects and the spatial variation of the ground motion have increased significantly the seismic demand on the bridge. This increase causes the failure in the anchorage of the bridge bearing system.</p>

Many studies on the strength reduction factor mainly focused on structures with the conventional hysteretic models. However, for the self-centering structure with the typical flag-shaped hysteretic behavior, the corresponding study is limited. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the strength reduction factor of the self-centering structure with flag-shaped hysteretic behavior subjected to near-fault pulse-like ground motions by the time history analysis. For this purpose, the smooth flag-shaped model based on Bouc-Wen model which can show flag-shaped hysteretic behavior is first described. The strength reduction factor spectra of the flag-shaped model are then calculated under 85 near-fault pulse-like ground motions. The influences of the ductility level, vibration period, site condition, hysteretic parameter, and hysteretic model are investigated statistically. For comparison, the strength reduction factors under ordinary ground motions are also analyzed. The results show that the strength reduction factor from near-fault pulse-like ground motions is smaller. Finally, a predictive model is proposed to estimate the strength reduction factor for the self-centering structure with the flag-shaped model under near-fault pulse-like ground motions.

Experiences of previous earthquakes demonstrate that lifelines have no proper performance exposed to Near-Fault (NF) earthquakes. Due to considerable effects of NF earthquakes and recommendation of the related design codes such as FEMA, evaluating the effects of these earthquakes on the pipelines is so important. In this research, the optimal placement of the viscous dampers in the water pipeline network subjected to NF earthquakes has been studied using Genetic Algorithm (GA). For this purpose, the water pipeline network of a zone in Tehran city was selected as a case study and was modeled using the Finite Element Method (FEM). Then, the nonlinear time-history analysis was undertaken via seismic scaled records of NF earthquakes. The obtained results indicated the critical points of network which were failed due to applied seismic waves. However, due to economical and technical issues, the optimal damper placement at critical points is necessary; all of the mentioned points were considered for optimization procedure using GA. Then, the viscous dampers were installed in the acquired optimal points. Eventually, a statistical test demonstrated optimum performance of the water pipelines network equipped with viscous dampers under NF earthquakes.

Although the knowledge and technology of performance-based earthquake engineering have rapidly advanced in the past several decades, current seismic design codes simply ignore the effect of aftershocks on the performance of structures. Thus, the present paper investigated the effect of aftershocks on seismic responses of multispan reinforced concrete (RC) bridges using the fragility-based numerical approach. For that purpose, a continuous girder RC bridge class containing 8 bridges was selected based on the statistical analysis of the existing RC bridges in China. 75 recorded mainshock-aftershock seismic sequences from 10 well-known earthquakes were selected in this study. In order to account for the uncertainty of modeling parameters, uniform design method was applied as the sampling method for generating the samples for fragility analysis. Fragility curves were then developed using nonlinear time-history analysis in terms of the peak curvature of pier column and displacement of bearings. Finally, the system fragility curves were derived by implementing Monte Carlo simulation on multinormal distribution of two components. From the results of this investigation, it was found that, for the RC continuous bridges, the influence of aftershocks can be harmful to both bridge components and system, which increases both the component fragility of the displacement of bearings and seismic curvature of pier sections and system fragility.

A variety of research has focused on the inelastic displacement demand of a single degree of freedom (SDOF) system when subjected to near-fault pulse-like ground motions, in which the concerned ductility, μ, is typically lower than ten for normal structures. However, for seismic isolated structures that are more prone to large displacement, the corresponding research is limited. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the inelastic displacement spectra of an SDOF system with μ ranging from 5 to 70 and further proposes a direct displacement-based (DDB) design method for seismic isolated bridges. More concretely, a pool of near-fault pulse-like records is assembled, the mean C μ as a function of T/ T p is developed, and the influences of the ductility, μ, and the post-to-pre-yield ratio, α, on C μ are carefully investigated. Then the corresponding inelastic displacement spectra, S d, are obtained, and a comprehensive piecewise expression is proposed to fit S d. After that, the utilization of the spectra for the DDB design of a three-span seismic isolated continuous bridge is performed, and the principal of simplifying the bridge to an SDOF system is carefully explained and verified.

In this work the performance of U-Shaped Steel Isolator is evaluated for a 5-story building subjected to seismic and blast vibrations. The structure is analysed using SAP 2000 software and a nonlinear time history analysis is carried out. The effectiveness of using base isolation is studied by comparing the structural responses of the building with isolator and without isolator and noticeable difference was observed. As the U-Shaped isolator absorbs the energy in all directions, it effectively controls the structural responses. In this study, the building is subjected to four different seismic and four different blast induced ground motions. It was observed that by the use of supplementary energy device there is reduction in top story acceleration, base shear and less deformation in the structure. This study concludes that the use of isolator has been effective in minimizing structural responses.

ABSTRACT The vertical near-fault seismic ground-motion component can cause significant structural deformation and damage, which can be evaluated from time history analysis using actual or synthetic ground-motion records. In this study, we propose a new stochastic model for the vertical pulseless near-fault ground motions that depends on earthquake magnitude, rupture distance, and site condition. The proposed model is developed based on the time–frequency characteristics of 606 selected actual vertical record components in strike-slip earthquakes. The use and validation of the model are presented using simulated records obtained by two simulation techniques. For the validation, the statistics of time–frequency-dependent power spectral acceleration estimated from the simulated records using the proposed stochastic model are compared with those from the actual records and the ground-motion models available in the literature.
