Vehicle rollover has always been a highly dangerous condition that can cause severe traffic casualties. In this work, a 14-degree-of-freedom vehicle model in MATLAB/Simulink is constructed with the vehicle suspension system dynamics. The validity of the model is verified by comparing with the CarSim model. Then an optimal distribution of damping force strategy with continuous damping control is proposed by combining the traditional lateral load transfer ratio control with optimized equations of suspension damping force. The damping force compensation of the left and right sides is the core of the optimal distribution of damping force strategy. The effectiveness and optimization effect of the optimal distribution of damping force strategy is proved by the simulation results under the fishhook and crosswind tests. The result shows that continuous damping control has evident control effects on vehicle rollover compared with passive suspension. The optimal distribution of the damping force strategy with continuous damping control has a great better performance than traditional continuous damping control, and it provides a certain assistance to vehicle handling stability.

Because of the nonlinear hysteresis characteristics of the magneto-rheological damper, the damper’s inverse model has disadvantages of low fitting accuracy and poor practicality. Therefore, in this study, an optimized genetic algorithm has been proposed to optimize the back propagation neural network’s initial weights and threshold. Compared with other damper controllers, the proposed inverse model improves the control current’s prediction accuracy and tracks the desired damping force in real time. Moreover, the proposed inverse model and designed fuzzy controller are applied to the 1/4 vehicle suspension system simulation. The obtained results show that the optimized neural network model can be applied to a practical control. The root mean square value of body acceleration of semi-active suspension is lower than that of passive suspension under different road excitation. This method provides a foundation for the accurate modeling and semi-active control of the magneto-rheological damper.

This paper presents a novel mass-center-position (MCP) metric for vehicle rollover propensity detection. MCP is first determined by estimating the positions of the center of mass of one sprung mass and two unsprung masses with two switchable roll motion models, before and after tire lift-off. The roll motion information without saturation can then be provided through MCP continuously. Moreover, to detect completed rollover statues for both tripped and untripped rollovers, the criteria are derived from d’Alembert principle and moment balance conditions based on MCP. In addition to tire lift-off, three new rollover statues, rollover threshold, rollover occurrence, and vehicle jumping into air can be all identified by the proposed criteria. Compared with an existing rollover index, lateral load transfer ratio, the fishhook maneuver simulation results in CarSim® for an E-class SUV show that MCP metric can successfully predict the vehicle impending rollover without saturation for untripped rollovers. Tripped rollovers caused by a triangle road bump are also successfully detected in the simulation. Thus, MCP metric can be successfully applied for rollover propensity prediction.

To assist vehicle rollover prevention and enhance vehicle roll motion safety, this paper proposes a novel active rollover preventer (ARPer) system, which consists of an in-wheel motor system moving along an orbit at the back of a vehicle. The roll and lateral dynamics of the vehicle equipped with the ARPer are modeled and mechanics analysis of the ARPer is presented as well. Based on the developed models, a Lyapunov nonlinear controller is designed for tracking a desired roll angle and a yaw rate when the impending rollover is detected. For a typical fishhook maneuver, two simulation cases are studied for different vehicle roof cargo loads, which represents different vehicle rollover properties without control. The CarSim®-Simulink co-simulation results show that compared with active front steering and differential braking control strategies, the APRer can successfully prevent the rollover propensity and maintain the vehicle lateral stability simultaneously.

In this study, a new class of magnetorheological (MR) damper, which can realize desired damping force at both low and high speeds of vehicle suspension systems, is proposed and its salient characteristics are shown through computer simulations. Unlike conventional MR dampers, the proposed MR damper has a specific pole shape function and therefore the damping coefficient is changed by varying the effective area of the main orifice. In addition, by controlling the opening or closing the bypass orifice, the drastic change of the damping coefficient is realizable. After briefly describing the operating principle, a mathematical modeling is performed considering the pole shape function which is a key feature of the proposed MR damper. Then, the field-dependent damping force and piston velocity-dependent characteristics are presented followed by an example on how to achieve desired damping force characteristics by changing the damping coefficient and slope breaking point which represents the bilinear damping property.

A semi-active suspension variable damping control strategy for heavy vehicles is proposed in this work. First, a nine-degree-of-freedom model of a semi-active suspension of heavy vehicles and a stochastic road input mathematical model are established. Second, using a 1/6 vehicle as an example, a semi-active suspension system with damping that can be adjusted actively is designed using proportional relief and throttle valves. The damping dynamic characteristics of the semi-active suspension system and the time to establish the damping force are studied through a simulation. Finally, a variable damping control strategy based on an actuator motion state is proposed to adjust the damping force of the semi-active suspension system actively and therefore satisfy the vibration reduction requirements of different roads. Results show that the variable damping control suspension can substantially improve vehicle ride comfort and handling stability in comparison with a passive suspension.
