To study the mechanical properties of stainless-steel-reinforced concrete (SSRC) columns under eccentric compression, one ordinary reinforced concrete column and eight SSRC columns were designed for eccentric compression load tests. The eccentricity and reinforcement ratio were considered as the variation parameters. The cracking and failure modes of the SSRC columns were studied. The effects of the variation parameters on the longitudinal strain, concrete strain, lateral displacement, and ultimate load were analyzed. The test results demonstrated that the failure modes of SSRC columns under eccentric compression are similar to those of ordinary reinforced columns. Eccentricity significantly affected the failure modes of the SSRC columns. Under the same eccentricity, the reinforcement ratio had negligible effect on the lateral displacement corresponding to the ultimate load. The mechanical properties of SSRC columns under small eccentric compression were better than expected; however, the ultimate loads under large eccentric compression were proposed. The ultimate load–bending moment curves obtained were consistent with the results of the test and finite element analysis. Based on the experimental results, the force characteristic coefficient was set as 2.7 for calculating the long-term crack width.

The use of stainless steel bars can improve the durability and sustainability of building materials. Through the static performance test, this research analyzes the failure pattern and bearing performance of bias stainless steel reinforced concrete (SSRC) column. The influence of reinforcement ratio of longitudinal bars and eccentricity on the mechanical performance of specimens was studied. Different constitutive models of stainless steel bars were used to calculate the ultimate bearing capacity of the section of the column under eccentric compression column. Based on the experimental results, a method to modify the expression of the design specification is proposed. And, the results were compared with the test results. The results showed that the damage patterns and failure modes of SSRC columns are essentially the same as those of traditional reinforced concrete columns. The bearing capacity of SSRC columns rises with the increase in the longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and the ductility of the specimens is enhanced. The ultimate load of the specimen decreases with the rise in eccentricity but the deflection increases gradually. The strain distribution of the mid-span section of the SSRC column conforms to the plane section assumption. The bearing capacity of the specimen can be analyzed by referring to the calculation method of the specification, and some parameters in the calculation formula of the specification are modified to adapt to the design and calculation of the SSRC column.

Resistance spot welded 1.2 mm (t)-thick 1400 MPa martensitic steel (MS1400) samples are fabricated and their microstructure, mechanical properties are investigated thoroughly. The mechanical performance and failure modes exhibit a strong dependence on weld-nugget size. The pull-out failure mode for MS1400 steel resistance spot welds does not follow the conventional weld-nugget size recommendation criteria of 4t0.5. Significant softening was observed due to dual phase microstructure of ferrite and martensite in the inter-critical heat affected zone (HAZ) and tempered martensite (TM) structure in sub-critical HAZ. However, the upper-critical HAZ exhibits obvious higher hardness than the nugget zone (NZ). In addition, the mechanical properties show that the cross-tension strength (CTS) is about one quarter of the tension-shear strength (TSS) of MS1400 weld joints, whilst the absorbed energy of cross-tension and tension-shear are almost identical.

We use tensile–shear tests to investigate the failure modes of Ti–1Al–1Mn microscale resistance spot welds and to determine how the failure mode affects the microstructure, microhardness profile, and mechanical performance. Two different failure modes were revealed: interfacial failure mode and pullout failure mode. The welds that fail by pullout failure mode have much better mechanical properties than those that fail by interfacial failure mode. The results show that weld nugget size is also a principal factor that determines the failure mode of microscale resistance spot welds. A minimum weld nugget size exists above which all specimens fail by pullout failure mode. However, the critical weld nugget sizes calculated using the existing recommendations are not consistent with the present experimental results. We propose instead a modified model based on distortion energy theory to ensure pullout failure. Calculating the critical weld nugget size using this model provides results that are consistent with the experimental data to high accuracy.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the moisture absorption behaviour and its influence on the mechanical properties of newly developed sandwich biocomposites with flax fibre-reinforced poly-lactic acid (PLA) face sheets and soft cork as the core material. Three different types of sandwich biocomposite laminates comprised of different layup configurations, namely, non-woven flax/PLA (Sample A), non-woven flax/PLA and cork as core (Sample B) and non-woven flax/paper backing/PLA, cork as core (Sample C), were fabricated. In order to evaluate the influence of moisture ingress on the mechanical properties, the biocomposites were immersed in seawater for a period of 1200 h. The biocomposites (both dry and water immersed) were then subjected to tensile, flexural and low-velocity falling weight impact tests. It was observed from the experimental results that the moisture uptake significantly influenced the mechanical properties of the biocomposites. The presence of the cork and paper in sample C made it more susceptible to water absorption, reaching a value of 34.33%. The presence of cork in the core also has a considerable effect on the mechanical, as well as energy dissipation, behaviours. The results of sample A exhibited improved mechanical performance in both dry and wet conditions compared to samples B and C. Sample A exhibits 32.6% more tensile strength and 81.4% more flexural strength in dry conditions than that in sample C. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray micro-CT images revealed that the failure modes observed are a combination of matrix cracking, core crushing and face core debonding. The results from this study suggest that flax/PLA sandwich biocomposites can be used in various lightweight applications with improved environmental benefits.

The balanced reinforcement ratio of FRP-reinforced concrete members and the flexural capacity under two different failure modes (concrete crushing and FRP rupture) are established, based on the analysis on flexural capacity of steel-reinforced concrete members in current concrete code. The effect of material properties on the balanced ratio, the variation of flexural capacity with different reinforcement ratio and a simplified nominal flexural capacity under FRP-rupture failure are derived.

This paper presents and discusses the experimental study on the mechanical properties of LBL column both under axial and eccentric compression. The results shows that the ultimate load for the eccentric compression specimens with the eccentricity values of 30 mm and 110 mm are 95.2 kN and 31.8 kN respectively. Eccentricity is one of the main influencing factors for the ultimate bearing capacity of the LBL columns. Because of the vulnerability of the mechanical connections or natural nodes to tensile stress and secondly, laminated bamboo is vulnerable to defects that has more detrimental influence on the tensile resistance of the material. The variation in strain for the laminated bamboo lumber column sections is linear throughout the loading process, following standard normal section bending theory which is similar as that for the beam.

In order to evaluate whether concrete with recycled coarse aggregate can be applied for steel reinforced concrete (SRC) under the earthquake, low cyclic loading tests of SRC with different recycled coarse aggregate (RCA) replacement percentage were carried out in this paper. Based on the tests of three SRRC column specimens, the failure modes, the hysteresis curves, the skeleton curves, the ductility, and the stiffness degradation of SRRC columns are investigated. The influence of variation in the RCA replacement percentage on the SRRC column is analyzed in detail. Test results show that the seismic performance of SRRC column is reduced to an allowable extent with the increasing magnitude of the RCA replacement percentage. The SRRC column still has a good seismic performance and the recycled coarse aggregate can be applied for steel reinforced concrete through the proper design.

A practical connection method of wall-column subassembly in new precast reinforced concrete frame-shearwall structure was proposed in this paper. Based on the general finite element software ABAQUS, numerical simulations were carried out on the mechanical performance of the precast and cast-in-situ wall-column subassemblies by using concrete damaged plastic model and bilinear kinematic hardening model. Results showed that mechanical performance of the precast wall-column subassembly, such as carrying capacities, deformations and failure modes, were almost equal to the cast-in-situ wall-column subassembly. Feasibility of the connection method which this paper proposed is verified preliminarily. The research results can provide theoretical references for related experimental researches, engineering designs and constructions.
