Mechanical face seals are crucial components of automotive cooling water pumps and affect the safe operation of the pump. This article focuses on the effect of friction instabilities on the wear of the seals. Friction instabilities, such as stick-slip, occur when the axle is decelerated or operated at a low speed. Based on previous studies, a simulation model is proposed of a mechanical face seal that considers the interaction of asperities of non-Gaussian surfaces and the heat transfer between the sealing rings. According to the Archard wear equation, a numerical wear simulation is performed, and the wear distance rate and wear time rate are obtained. A comparison of the contact pressure of the Gaussian and non-Gaussian surfaces indicates that the latter is more likely to generate high contact pressure, thereby producing more significant wear. The viscous shear heat and frictional heat due to asperity contact decrease with an increase in the thickness of the tapered film. As the shaft decelerates, the wear distance rate increases with an increase in the axial stiffness. The axial damping only affects the duration of the oscillations. The wear time rate decreases with an increase in the torsional stiffness and torsional damping. The results of this research provide guidelines for estimating the wear of mechanical seals when friction instabilities occur.

A two-dimensional Reynolds equation was established for isothermal compressible gas between the two faces of a dry gas face seal with both spiral grooves and an inner annular groove onto the hard face. The opening force, the leakage rate, the axial film stiffness and the film stiffness to leakage ratio were calculated by finite element method. The comparisons with the sealing performances of a typical gas face seal only with spiral grooves onto its hard face were made. The effects of the face geometric parameters on the static behavior of such a seal were analyzed. The optimization principle for geometric parameters of a dry gas face seals with spiral grooves and an inner annular groove was presented. The recommended geometric parameters of spiral grooves and circular groove presented by optimization can ensure larger axial stiffness while lower leakage rates.

An adjustable-length intramedullary (IM) nail may reduce both complications secondary to fracture fixation and manufacturing costs. We hypothesized that our novel nail would have suitable mechanical performance. To test this hypothesis, we manufactured three prototypes and evaluated them in quasi-static axial compression and torsion and quasi-static four-point bending. Prototypes were dynamically evaluated in both cyclic axial loading and four-point bending and torsion-to-failure. The prototypes exceeded expectations; they were comparable in both quasi-static axial stiffness (1.41 ± 0.37 N/m in cervine tibiae and 2.30 ± 0.63 in cadaver tibiae) and torsional stiffness (1.05 ± 0.26 N·m/deg in cervine tibiae) to currently used nails. The quasi-static four-point bending stiffness was 80.11 ± 09.360, greater than reported for currently used nails. A length-variance analysis indicates that moderate changes in length do not unacceptably alter bone-implant axial stiffness. After 103,000 cycles of axial loading, the prototype failed at the locking screws, comparable to locking screw failures seen clinically. The prototypes survived 1,000,000 cycles of four-point bend cyclic loading, as indicated by a consistent phase angle throughout cyclic loading. The torsion-to-failure test suggests that the prototype has adequate resistance to applied torques that might occur during the healing process. Together, these results suggest that our novel IM nail performs sufficiently well to merit further development. If brought to market, this adjustable-length IM nail could reduce both patient complications and healthcare costs.

Aims Restoration of proximal medial femoral support is the keystone in the treatment of intertrochanteric fractures. None of the available implants are effective in constructing the medial femoral support. Medial sustainable nail (MSN-II) is a novel cephalomedullary nail designed for this. In this study, biomechanical difference between MSN-II and proximal femoral nail anti-rotation (PFNA-II) was compared to determine whether or not MSN-II can effectively reconstruct the medial femoral support. Methods A total of 36 synthetic femur models with simulated intertrochanteric fractures without medial support (AO/OTA 31-A2.3) were assigned to two groups with 18 specimens each for stabilization with MSN-II or PFNA-II. Each group was further divided into three subgroups of six specimens according to different experimental conditions respectively as follows: axial loading test; static torsional test; and cyclic loading test. Results The mean axial stiffness, vertical displacement, and maximum failure load of MSN-II were 258.47 N/mm (SD 42.27), 2.99 mm (SD 0.56), and 4,886 N (SD 525.31), respectively, while those of PFNA-II were 170.28 N/mm (SD 64.63), 4.86 mm (SD 1.66), and 3,870.87 N (SD 552.21), respectively. The mean torsional stiffness and failure torque of MSN-II were 1.72 N m/° (SD 0.61) and 16.54 N m (SD 7.06), respectively, while those of PFNA-II were 0.61 N m/° (SD 0.39) and 6.6 N m (SD 6.65), respectively. The displacement of MSN-II in each cycle point was less than that of PFNA-II in cyclic loading test. Significantly higher stiffness and less displacement were detected in the MSN-II group (p < 0.05). Conclusion The biomechanical performance of MSN-II was better than that of PFNA-II, suggesting that MSN-II may provide more effective mechanical support in the treatment of unstable intertrochanteric fractures. The service life of mechanical face seals is related to the lubrication and wear characteristics. The stable analytical methods are commonly used, but they cannot address effects of random vibration loading, which, according to experimental studies, are important factors for lubrication and wear of mechanical face seals used in air and space vehicles. Hence, a dynamic model for mechanical face seals is proposed, with a focus on the effects of random vibration loading. The mechanical face seal in the axial direction is described as a mass-spring-damping system. Spectrum analysis specified for random vibration is then performed numerically to obtain the response power spectral density (PSD) of the mechanical face seal and calculate the root mean square (RMS) values under random vibration conditions. A lumped parameter model is then developed to examine how dynamic parameters such as stiffness and damping affect the lubrication regimes of mechanical face seals. Based on the dynamic model and Archard wear equation, a numerical wear simulation method is proposed. The results elucidated that the increase of input acceleration PSDs, the decrease of axial damping, and the increase of axial stiffness lead to the probability of the mechanical face seal operating under full film lubrication regime increase and finally the decrease of wear. This research provides a guideline for improving the adaptability of mechanical face seals under random vibration environments.

The two-dimensional plane-strain sliding contact of a smooth rigid roller on a transverse ground rough surface is analyzed. The rough surface is idealized as an elastic half-space with periodic roughness modeled as cylindrical ridges oriented transverse to the sliding direction. The contact problem is solved using a numerical iterative method in which each asperity contact is treated as a micro-Hertz contact, and the exact treatment of asperity interaction is included. The subsurface stress field is calculated using Westergaard stress functions. The subsequent analysis compares the rough surface stress fields with the corresponding smooth Hertz contact to evaluate the influence of surface roughness and friction on the subsurface stress distributions. The results show that the real area of contact is less than the corresponding smooth surface Hertz contact area, and the magnitude of the actual localized maximum contact pressure is always greater than the corresponding smooth surface contact pressure. The asperity level subsurface effective stresses are greater in magnitude than the maximum subsurface stress due to the macro-Hertz contact for low coefficients of friction, and for high coefficients of friction the maximum effective stresses occur on the bulk material surface.

ABSTRACTThe elastic-plastic microcontact model of a sphere in contact with a flat plate is developed in the present study to investigate the effect of surface roughness on the total contact area and contact load. From the study done by the finite element method, the dimensionless asperity contact area, average contact pressure, and contact load in the elastoplastic regime are assumed to be a power form as a function of dimensionless interference (δ/δec). The coefficients and exponents of the power form expressions can be determined by the boundary conditions set at the two ends of the elastoplastic deformation regime. The contact pressures evaluated by the present model are compared with those predicted by the Hertz theory, without considering the surface roughness and the reported model, including the roughness effect, but only manipulating in the elastic regime. The area of non-zero contact pressure is enlarged if the surface roughness is considered in the microcontact behavior. The maximum contact pressure is lowered by the presence of surface roughness if the contact load is fixed. Under a normal load, both the contact pressure and the contact area are elevated by raising the plasticity index for the surface of the same surface roughness.

A computer model that addresses the wear behavior by calculating hydrodynamic and asperity contact pressures was used to optimize the running face of three-piece oil control rings. The model incorporates Reynolds equation to calculate the oil film thickness for two sliding surfaces under a given condition (profile and topography of the surfaces, load, speed, lubricant viscosity grade and operation temperature). Prediction of the resultant asperity contact pressures is made by Greenwood-Williamson model. More scraping ring rail profiles are better for oil control, but present more wear due to higher asperity contact pressures. This higher wear can lead to less scraping profile, increasing ring end gap and lower ring tangential load, which deteriorates long term oil consumption control, hence engine durability. In the present work, a relatively simple computer program was used to predict lube oil film thickness and wear for different rail running profiles. Ring wear was assumed to be proportional to the calculated asperity contact pressure. Different rail profiles where the running profiles had a flat portion varying from less than 0.10 mm to higher than 0.20 mm were simulated and then tested in a bench test consisting in an electrical motored engine. Except for the combustion absence, all other engine characteristics were preserved (e.g., stroke, piston-ring pack, lubrication system) in the bench test. The measured oil control ring wear correlated very well with the predicted one. The model allowed the numerical optimization of the running profile of ring rail, which has lower asperity contact pressure, hence wear, but still has a good scraping capability. Two actual ICE tests were also realized. The predicted lower wear of the optimized profile was experimentally confirmed and no differences on LOC were found.

Current gas leak rate prediction methods for elastomeric face seals rely heavily on the assumption that all leakage is permeation, rather than leakage across the seal interface [1–3]. To date, there has been no definitive evidence that this is indeed the case. It is essential to investigate the magnitude of interface leakage to facilitate the validation of the current compressible permeation model and to quantify the interfacial leakage for the design of future state-of-the-art face seals. To this end, a series of leak rate experiments is presented on a square-ring seal, manufactured from silicone elastomer S0383-70. The unique experimental design affords the ability to quantify both a metal-elastomer interface, as well as an elastomer-elastomer interface. The experiments utilized two square-ring test specimens, each with a common width but different in height. The test apparatus consisted of stainless steel platens, near-hermetic plumbing, programmable environmental chamber, and the required instrumentation. The initial data reduction was accomplished by the mass point leak rate technique; whereas mass was calculated through measurements of gas pressure, temperature, and volume and a regression analysis yielded the leak rate of the seal. A secondary reduction of the leak rates in the unique experimental configuration further distinguished the total leakage into permeation and interface leak components, accomplished through the algebraic solution of the design of experiments guided matrix. Results showed that, with modest contact pressure, permeation was the largest component of the total leakage. In addition, the interface leakage for the various seal mating conditions (i.e., seal-on-flange, seal-on-seal) was quantified for the contact pressure investigated. Contrary to previous conclusions, the interface leakages were found to be significant. In the application of space docking seals, a common example of elastomeric face seals, the significance of quantifying the interfacial leakages guides the design of the seal for incomplete seal compression conditions as well has for the androgynous docking configuration.

The influence of roughness lay directionality on scuffing failure is studied considering different roughness lay direction combinations of the contacting surfaces of a ball-on-disk contact. Using a recently developed scuffing model Li et al., (2013, “A Model to Predict Scuffing Failures of a Ball-On-Disk Contact,” Tribol. Int., 60, pp. 233–245)., the bulk temperature and flash temperature are predicted for each roughness lay combination within the load range from 0.76 GPa to 2.47 GPa in a step-wise manner under the rolling velocity of 10 m/s and slide-to-roll ratio of −0.5 to show substantial impacts of roughness lay directionality on scuffing resistance performance (SRP). It is found (i) the lay direction combination that results into contacts of asperities with small contact radii leads to increased local contact pressures and frictional heat flux, reducing SRP; (ii) the continuous asperity contact along the sliding direction leads to continuous surface temperature rise and lowers SRP; and (iii) the lubricant side leakage caused by the pressure gradient in the direction normal to the sliding direction leads to reduced SRP. With these main mechanisms in effect, the SRP of a contact decreases as the deviation between the roughness texture orientations of the two surfaces increases. The surfaces with their roughness lay directions both perpendicular to the sliding direction exhibits best SRP. The surfaces with one roughness lay direction positioned in line with the direction of sliding and the other positioned perpendicular to the sliding direction shows worst SRP.

Numerical analyses of finite journal bearings operating with large eccentricity ratios were conducted to better understand the mixed lubrication phenomena in conformal contacts. The average Reynolds equation derived by Patir and Cheng was utilized in the lubrication analysis. The influence function, calculated numerically using the finite element method, was employed to compute the bearing deformation. The effects of bearing surface roughness were incorporated in the present analysis for the calculations of the asperity contact pressure and the asperity contact area. The numerical solutions of the hydrodynamic and asperity contact pressures, lubricant film thickness, and asperity contact area were evaluated based on a simulated bearing-journal geometry. The calculations revealed that the asperity contact pressure may vary significantly along both the width and the circumferential directions. It was also shown that the asperity contacts and the lubricant film thickness were strongly dependent on the bearing width, asperity orientation, and operating conditions.
