To study the initiation and expansion of the interlayer gap of the China Railway Track System Type II (CRTS-II) ballastless slab track structure under the action of repeated thermal loading as well as the influence of the interlayer gap on the displacement, strain and stiffness of the track structure, a 1/4 scale three-span ballastless slab track simply supported bridge structural system specimen was developed and 18 cycles of extremely thermal loading tests were carried out. Static loading tests were carried out before and after the repeated thermal loading test and the effects of the repeated temperature loading on the mechanical properties of the structural system were analyzed. The test results show that under repeated temperature loading, there is a gap between the track slab and cement emulsified asphalt (CA) mortar near the fixed end section of the beam (close to the shear slots). The interlayer gap gradually expands to the mid-span section in a “stepped” shape in three stages: initiation, expansion and stabilization. Under the same temperature load, the camber of the concrete box beam decreases gradually while that of the track structure increases gradually with the increase of the interlayer gap length. During the three stages of interlayer gap development, the track structure stiffness degrades gradually, and the fastest reduction rate during the expansion stage. At the end of the 18th cycle of thermal loading, a degradation of 14.96% and 2.52% is observed in the stiffness of the track structure and that of the ballastless track-bridge structural system, respectively.

In order to find out the influence of subgrade frost heave on the deformation of track structure and track irregularity of high-speed railways, a nonlinear damage finite element model for China Railway Track System III (CRTSIII) slab track subgrade was established based on the constitutive theory of concrete plastic damage. The analysis of track structure deformation under different subgrade frost heave conditions was focused on, and amplitude the limit of subgrade frost heave was put forward according to the characteristics of interlayer seams. This work is expected to provide guidance for design and construction. Subgrade frost heave was found to cause cosine-type irregularities of rails and the interlayer seams in the track structure, and the displacement in lower foundation mapping to rail surfaces increased. When frost heave occured in the middle part of the track slab, it caused the greatest amount of track irregularity, resulting in a longer and higher seam. Along with the increase in frost heave amplitude, the length of the seam increased linearly whilst its height increased nonlinearly. When the frost heave amplitude reached 35 mm, cracks appeared along the transverse direction of the upper concrete surface on the base plate due to plastic damage; consequently, the base plate started to bend, which reduced interlayer seams. Based on the critical value of track structures’ interlayer seams under different frost heave conditions, four control limits of subgrade frost heave at different levels of frost heave amplitude/wavelength were obtained.

In order to investigate the vertical dynamic response characteristics of train-track-bridge system on CWR (Continunously Welded Rail) under dynamic load of train on HSR (High-Speed Railway) bridge. Based on the principle of vehicle train-track-bridge coupling dynamics, taking the 32m simply supported bridge of a section of Zhengzhou-Xuzhou Passenger Dedicated Line as an example, the finite element software ANSYS and the dynamic analysis software SIMPACK are used for co-simulation, and bridge model of the steel spring floating slab track and the CRTSIII ballastless track (China Railway Track System) considering the shock absorbing steel spring, the limit barricade and the contact characteristics of track structure layers are established. On this basis, in order to study the dynamic response laws of the design of ballastless track structure parameters to the system when the train crosses the bridge and provide the basis for the design and construction, by studying the influence of the speed of train on the bridge, the damage of fasteners and the parameters of track structure on the train-track-bridge system, the displacement of rail, vertical vibration acceleration and wheel-rail force response performance are analyzed. Studies have shown that: At the train speed of 40 km/h, the displacement and acceleration of the rail and track slab in the CRTSIII ballastless track are smaller than the floating slab track structure, but the floating slab track structure has better vibration reduction performance for bridges. The acceleration of rail, track slab and bridge increases obviously with the increase of train speed, the rail structure has the largest increasement. Reducing the stiffness of fasteners could decrease the vertical acceleration response of the steel spring floating slab track system, the ability to absorb shock can be enhanceed by reducing the stiffness of the fastener appropriately. Increasing the density of the floating slab can increase the vertical acceleration of the floating slab and the bridge, thereby decreasing the vibration amplitude of the system.

To study the mechanical properties of the China Railway Track System type II (CRTS-II) ballastless slab track structure, a 1/4-scale specimen of a CRTS-II slab ballastless track-32-m standard prefabricated simply supported box girder bridge with three spans and two high-speed railway lines was developed. The mechanical properties of the structure under the action of daily natural temperatures were studied under the natural environmental conditions. The structural strain and relative interlayer displacements were analyzed. The results show that the temperature of the CRTS-II ballastless track-bridge structural system changes periodically every 24 h. The strain of the structural layers of the track system first increases and then decreases sinusoidally, and the internal strain of the track system lags along the vertical depth direction. The relative displacement between the layers of the ballastless track bridge structure system increases with the increase in temperature. The extreme value of the vertical relative displacement appears between the track bed and the bridge at section 1/4 in the span, so it should be paid attention to by the maintenance personnel. Due to the constraint of the shear slots, the structural strain and relative displacement at the fixed end near the shear slots are smaller than those at the sliding end. The mid-span deflection is the largest, and the overall deflection during the cooling phase is more significant than that during the heating phase.

This paper uses the long-span steel truss slab track as its research subject to analyze the new type of sleeper slab track structure with an experimental method. Firstly, a full-scale model was established in the laboratory to form a “rail–sleeper slab–self-compacting concrete cushion–steel beam” composite structure, and a fatigue test was performed on the track structure. The cyclic load was set up as a sine form with a range between 75 and 375 kN at a 5 Hz interval and 3 × 106 cycles. Based on the test, the performance of the track structure under cyclic train load was studied. Secondly, after every 106 loading cycles, the vertical static loading test and horizontal resistance test of the track structure were carried out to obtain the strain and displacement under different loading cycles. Finally, after 3 × 106 cycles of sine cyclic loading, the horizontal ultimate resistance test of the track structure was carried out to study its horizontal failure mode. The aims of this paper were to verify the applicability of the sleeper slab track, identify the mechanical properties, and determine the unfavorable position. The findings can provide an important reference for the practical use of the sleeper slab track structure.

To probe into the time-dependent behaviour of the ballastless track–bridge structural system under train load, based on the import of the static and fatigue damage constitutive model of materials to simulate damage deterioration of the structural system and interface cohesive zone model to the interface layer, a three-dimensional nonlinear finite element model of the China Railway Track System Type II (CRTS II) ballastless track–bridge structural system was established using the equivalent static method. Then, using this model, we developed the numerical simulation analysis of the influence law of material damage deterioration on structural system performance under train load and revealed the fatigue evolution of the structural system. The results show that the beam remains in compressed status for the whole process, the track is in compression in the midspan and in tension at the beam end, and the tensile stress is larger near the shear groove under the double-track static load. Under the fatigue load, stiffness degradation of the structural system is not obvious, and integral rigidity of the structural system is dependent on the rigidity of the beam. Strength reduction of the materials caused stress redistribution of the structural system and had a larger effect on the stress of each layer of track structure than on the stress on the beam. The fatigue degradation of the cement-emulsified asphalt (CA) mortar layer material has a significant impact on the structural system, which directly affects structural layer stress variation with the fatigue loading cycle.

This study focuses on evaluating the field performance of a newly developed eco-friendly precast concrete slab track structure for railway/subway systems in Seoul, South Korea. Although Ballasted railway track structures are one of the most common track structures in the railway industry, they have some drawbacks including higher maintenance cost, un-uniform supports, and a high level of noise and vibration. However, a ballastless (slab-based) track structure system requires less maintenance and uniform support conditions, as well as several ballastless structure systems developed for high-speed trains. The Seoul Metro subway in South Korea has developed a ballastless reinforced concrete (RC) slab railway system using a type of conventional concrete. This study presents a ballastless precast concrete slab using a newly developed eco-friendly concrete, which can significantly improve structural performances and the manufacturability of a railway track structure system. This study evaluates the field performance of the eco-friendly concrete slab system deployed in one of the existing tunnel sections of the Seoul Metro subway system. A total of 10 m long slab sections including a 5 m long eco-friendly “ballasted track to slab track (B2S)” panels section and a 5 m long conventional B2S panels section are installed and monitored side by side. Field tests are performed to measure the level of noise, vibration, dynamic wheel load, rail displacement, and rail stress. The field measurements from the eco-friendly B2S section are compared to those of the conventional reinforced concrete slab track systems. The results show that the performance of the new B2S system using the eco-friendly concrete is comparable and/or superior to the conventional system.

The mechanical performance of China Railway Track System type II (CRTS II) ballastless track suitable for High-Speed Railway (HSR) bridges is investigated in this project by testing a one-quarter-scaled three-span specimen under thermal loading. Stress analysis was performed both experimentally and numerically, via finite-element modeling in the latter case. The results showed that strains in the track slab, in the cement-emulsified asphalt (CA) mortar and in the track bed, increased nonlinearly with the temperature increase. In the longitudinal direction, the zero-displacement section between the track slab and the track bed was close to the 1/8L section of the beam, while the zero-displacement section between the track slab and the box girder bridge was close to the 3/8L section. The maximum values of the relative vertical displacement between the track bed and the bridge structure occurred in the section at three-quarters of the span. Numerical analysis showed that the lower the temperature, the larger the tensile stresses occurring in the different layers of the track structure, whereas the higher the temperature, the higher the relative displacement between the track system and the box girder bridge. Consequently, quantifying the stresses in the various components of the track structure resulting from sudden temperature drops and evaluating the relative displacements between the rails and the track bed resulting from high-temperature are helpful in the design of ballastless track structures for high-speed railway lines.

Asphalt is a common material that is used extensively for roadways. Furthermore, bituminous mixes have been used in railways, both as asphalt and as mortar. Different agencies and research institutes have investigated and suggested various applications. These studies indicate the benefits of bituminous material under railways, such as improving a substructure’s stiffness and bearing capacity; enhancing its dynamic characteristics and response, especially under high-speed train loads; waterproofing the subgrade; protecting the top layers against fine contamination. These potential applications can improve the overall track structure performance and lead to minimizing settlement under heavy loads. They can also guarantee an appropriate response under high-speed loads, especially in comparison to a rigid slab track. This review paper documents the literature related to the utilization of asphalt and bituminous mixes in railway tracks. This paper presents a critical review of the research in the application of asphalt and bituminous mixes in railway tracks. Additionally, this paper reviews the design and construction recommendations and procedures for asphalt and bituminous mixes in railway tracks as practiced in different countries. This paper also provides case studies of projects where asphalt and bituminous mixes have been utilized in railway tracks. It is anticipated that this review paper will facilitate (1) the exchange of ideas and innovations in the area of the design and construction of railway tracks and (2) the development of unified standards for the design and construction of railway tracks with asphalt and bituminous mixtures.

The slab track is a new sort of track structure, which has been widely used in high-speed rail and special line for passenger. However, the ballastless track structure design theory is still not perfect and can not meet the requirements of current high-speed rail and passenger line ballastless track. In this paper, composite beam method is used to calculate the deflection of the track plate and in this way the vertical supporting stress distribution of the track plate can be gotten which set a basis for the follow-up study of the dynamic stress distribution in the subgrade. Slab track plate’s bearing stress under moving load is analyzed through Matlab program. By calculation and analysis, it is found that the deflection of track plate and the rail in the double-point-supported finite beam model refers to the rate of spring coefficient of the fastener and the mortar.The supporting stress of the rail plate is inversely proportional to the supporting stress of the rail. The two boundary conditions of that model ,namely, setting the end of the model in the seams of the track plate or not , have little effect on the results. We can use the supporting stress of the track plates on state 1to get the distribution of the supporting stress in the track plate when bogies pass. Also, when the dynamic load magnification factor is 1.2, the track plate supporting stress of CRST I & CRST II-plate non-ballasted structure is around 40kPa.
