Our study aimed to analyze some qualitative aspects of five landraces of the tomato “Piennolo,” typical of the Vesuvian area, Italy, and determine the in vitro antioxidant activity. All samples showed a high °Brix value and acidity, as well as a discrete amount of reducing sugars, indicating their good quality as fresh products. They showed a high content of lycopene (up to 218 μg g−1 of fresh product) and ascorbic acid (up to 238 μg g−1 of fresh product). The content of total polyphenols was never less than 278 μg g−1 of fresh product. Hyperoside, chlorogenic and gallic acids were the most abundant polyphenols. The interrelationships between the parameters analyzed and the different landraces showed that total polyphenols could have mostly affected (ρ = 0.76) the antioxidant activity more than lycopene (ρ = −0.96). The interrelationships between the most abundant polyphenols and antioxidant activity showed that hyperoside, although the most abundant, negatively affected (ρ = −0.93) the antioxidant activity. Due to the high content of lycopene, ascorbic acid, and hyperoside, the five landraces of the tomato “Piennolo” could be considered promising in terms of their potential healthy characteristics.

This study investigated the in-vitro antioxidant activity of ethanol leaf extract of Justicia carnea and its effect on antioxidant status of alloxan-induced diabetic albino rats. The in-vitro antioxidant activity was assayed by determining the total phenol, flavonoids, ascorbic acid, β-carotene and lycopene contents and by using 2,2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, reducing antioxidant power and inhibition of lipid peroxidation antioxidant systems. Oxidative stress was produced in rats by single intraperitoneal injection of 150 mg/kg alloxan and serum concentration of malonaldehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) were determined. Five experimental groups of rats (n=6) were used for the study. Two groups of diabetic rats received oral daily doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg Justicia carnea leaf extract respectively while gilbenclamide (5 mg/ml); a standard diabetic drug was also given to a specific group for 14 days. From the result, the leaf extract contained a higher concentration of flavonoids followed byphenols, ascorbic acid, lycopene and β-carotene. The extract displayed more potent reducing power ability with EC50 of 40 µg/ml compared to BHA (EC50 of 400µg/ml). The percentage DPPH radical scavenging activity of the extract was also higher with EC50 of 200µg/ml and increased with increase in concentration while BHA had EC50of 320µg/ml. The inhibition of lipid peroxidation also increased with increase in concentration with EC50 of 58µg/ml and comparable with BHA (EC50=60µg/ml). The effect of the plant extract on antioxidant enzyme activities was concentration-dependent. Administration of 100mg/kg of the plant extract resulted in a significant decrease (p<0.05) in serum MDA concentration, while 200 mg/kg of the extract caused a significant (p˂0.05) increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activities with a non-significant increase (p>0.05) in the serum level of MDA when compared with the diabetic untreated group. These findings suggest that ethanol leaf extract of Justicia carnea have antioxidant properties and could handle diabetes-induced oxidative stress.

Mashua (Tropaeolum tuberosum R. & P.) is an Andean crop of high nutritional value and medicinal properties, which presents a great diversity in morphology and color. The aim of the study was to evaluate the content of phenolic compounds and in vitro antioxidant activity of the most economically important mashua accessions in the Puno Region, Peru. Six accessions of mashua (three purplecolored and three yellow-colored) were evaluated. The content of total polyphenols, total flavonoids and identification of phenolic compounds was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu assay, aluminum chloride colorimetric method and HPLC-DAD, respectively. In vitro antioxidant activity was evaluated using the FRAP and DPPH assays. In general, the purple-colored mashua had a significantly higher content of total polyphenols, total flavonoids, and in vitro antioxidant activity compared to the yellowcolored mashua; being the Tt-23 accession purple-colored (peel/pulp, purple/purple), which presented a significantly higher content of phenolic compounds and in vitro antioxidant activity compared to the other accessions evaluated (P<0.05). Furthermore, a significant correlation was observed between FRAP and DPPH activities with the total content of polyphenols and flavonoids (P<0.01), as well as between FRAP activity and the caffeic acid and rutin levels (P<0.05). These results suggest that purple-colored mashua, particularly the Tt-23 accession (peel/pulp, purple/purple), has better nutraceutical and antioxidant properties due to its higher content of phenolic compounds.

The influence of flaked einkorn (Tiriticum monococcum L.) used as ingredient in production of biscuits on some of their chemical, biological active compounds and In vitro starch digestion. The biscuits were produced from whole einkorn flour to which 30 %, 50 %, 70 % and 100 % einkorn flakes were added at the expense of the einkorn flour. It was found from the results with increase flaking einkorn in biscuits increase: moisture, total fats and proteins contend in the biscuits and decreases ash and total carbohydrates. Form the results for biological active compounds with increase flaking einkorn in biscuits, decreases total polyphenols and increase total carotenoids and antioxidant activity. In vitro starch digestion showed that when biscuits contend more then 30 % of einkorn flour reduces the body's ability to break down the starch contained in biscuits.

In continuation of our study the in vitro antioxidant activity of some novel quinoxaline derivatives was investigated by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method with respect to ascorbic acid. To determine the antioxidant activity, a number of substituted indoxyls (3A-G), cyclic ketones (2A-G), and quinoxalines (1A-G) were synthesized by both microwave and conventional heating methods. The present findings revealed that some quinoxalines and their precursors (1D, 1F, 1G and 2E) exhibited a marked scavenging effect on DPPH radical. A majority of the population in the developing world is struggling to raise living standards and improve health-care delivery due to increasing poverty and population. According to an estimate, 70-80% of the developing world is dependent on conventional plant-obtained remedies, as pharmaceuticals are high priced, so the present study was aimed at evaluating the crude ethanolic extract of stem bark of plant Elaeocarpus tuberculatus Roxb. belonging to the family Elaeocarpaceae with in- vitro antioxidant activity by following various methods namely total reducing power and free radical scavenging activity was evaluated using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical. The crude ethanolic extract possesses significant concentration dependent inhibition of DPPH activity and concentration dependent increase in reducing power property against the standard ascorbic acid. Our findings provide evidence that the crude ethanolic extract of stem bark of Elaeocarpus tuberculatus Roxb. is a potential source of natural antioxidant. In-vitro antioxidant action of hydroalcoholic leaf extract of Grewia hirsuta (HAEGH) has been examined using one, “1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH) free from radical scavenging” actions. The plant collected from the forest of the Western Ghats region of Karnataka province. The motive for plant collection from a specific location is the plant of forests exhibits the variation in growth, quantity, and quality of their active ingredients and secondary metabolites due to influence ecological factors like effect changes in location, soil, climate, etc. The work corresponds to preliminary phytochemical investigation for diverse phytoconstituents and quantitative phytochemical analysis of total phenolic, flavonoids &amp; alkaloids content (TPC, TFC &amp; TAC respectively) was evaluated with advanced methods. “HPTLC (High performance thin-layer” chromatography) fingerprint investigation was achieved for qualitative determination of the likely number of elements present in the hydroalcoholic extract. In-vitro antioxidant activity of HAEGH has been determined through hydroxyl radical scavenging assay that exhibited strong dose-dependent antioxidant activity as compared with standards compound, ascorbic acid. The IC50 value of HAEGH found, 25.90 % inhibition and for ascorbic acid, it was 17.68%. The Preliminary phytochemical estimation found presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, glycosides, phenol, proteins, diterpins and quantitative phytochemical analysis estimation of TPC, TFC &amp; TAC found to be 3.627%, 4.059% &amp; 5.671% respectively. HPTLC analysis of HAEGH at 354nm reveals the presence of a compound with Rf value 0.44 compare with Rf value 0.46 of quercetin. These outcomes indicated that the hydroalcoholic leaf extract of Grewia hirsuta plant contains phytoconstituents that exhibit antioxidant activity possible because of the existence of bioactive compounds.
