An ionic polymer-metal composite (IPMC) is an electroactive material that bends when electrically stimulated and generates electric current when bent. In this paper we investigate a coupled IPMC sensor-actuator using both the sensing and actuation properties of these electroactive materials. We describe the design of a coupled IPMC sensor-actuator, the feedback controller and the experimental evaluation of the system. Experimental results show the feasibility of closed-loop control of IPMC actuator with a mechanically coupled IPMC sensor.

In this paper, a closed-loop feedback controller is developed for the underwater vehicle propelled by ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC) actuator. The dynamics of the underwater vehicle with IPMC actuator are modeled using the large deflection beam model and hydrodynamic forces due to its interaction with the surrounding water. The hydrodynamic force coefficients are identified based on the results of extensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The path of the vehicle is controlled by simultaneously controlling the yaw angle and speed of the vehicle using the proportional controllers. Simulation data is utilized to find the relation between control input parameters namely, amplitude and bias of the voltage applied to the IPMC, and yaw angle and speed of the vehicle. In the simulations, frequency of the control input is assumed to be fixed. Simulation results show that the proposed controller can be effectively used to steer the under water vehicles propelled by IPMC.

Biomimetic is the field of engineering in which biological creatures and their functions are investigated and are used as the basis for the design and manufacturing of machines. Ionic Polymer Metal Composite (IPMC) is a smart material which has demonstrated a meaningful bending and tip force after the application of a low voltage. It is light-weighted, flexible, easily actuated, multi-directional applicable and requires simple manufacturing. Resultantly, IPMC has attracted scientists and researchers to analyze it further and consider it for any industrial and biomimetic applications. Presently, the research on IPMC is bi-directional oriented. A few groups of researchers are busy to find out the causes for the weaknesses of the material and to find out any remedy for them. The second class of scientists is exploring new areas of applications where IPMC material can be used. Although, the application zone of IPMC is ranging from micropumps diaphragms to surgical holding devices, this paper provides an overview of the IPMC application in biomimetic and biomedical field.
