The purpose of the experiment was to highlight the germination of sunflower seeds affected by the presence of saline stress and the identification of tolerant genotypes. The biological material was represented by sunflower cvs. (Helianthus annuus L.): Coril, Select, Santiago and Fundulea-206. To simulate the saline conditions, germination solutions of sodium chloride (NaCl) were used with concentrations corresponding to the osmotic pressures -6 and -10 atm and the control seed hydration was performed with distilled water. Determination of seed germination, growth of seedling, percentage of plumules dry matter, chlorophyll content and free proline were performed. The experimental data obtained suppose the existence in the assimilation apparatus of sunflowers seedling subjected to stress a competitive chlorophyll/free proline biosynthesis processes. The experimental results regarding the effect of salinity on seed germination and seedling growth revealed important differences between genotypes. The radicle growth in the germination process were strongly affected by saline excess, with significant differences between cultivars. Saline stress results in significant reductions in the amount of chlorophyll, and high levels of free proline. It can be observed that with the increase of the stress level the percentage of the dry matter increases, indicating an accentuated water deficit.

The effect of the exposure of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) seeds to red light laser radiationwith 650 nm 50 mw/cm2by diode laser in germination and growth of seedlings and calli had beenstudied. Seeds were irradiated with red light for different periods of time 5, 10, 15 and 20minutes. The percentage of seeds germination and the average of roots length were differentaccording to exposure time used. Increasing the time of exposure led to the best results in seedgermination percentage (100%), rooting and shooting behavior and flowering accelerationcompared with control. Initiation of calli from explants (roots, stems and leaves) of sunflowerseedlings on Murashige and Skoog media containing 1.0 mg/l of Benzyl adenine and 0.5 mg/l ofNaphthalene acetic acid were succeeded very well from the irradiated seeds. The best irradiationtime was 20 minutes for growth and durability of leaf calli. The fresh weight, protein, DNA, RNAcontents and the specific activity of dihydrofolate reductase of calli of different explants wereincreased with increasing the duration of seeds exposure to red light at 30 and 60 days of growthon media. Results also illustrate increases in protein and oil contents in the irradiated seeds overcontrol seeds, specially at 20 minutes. Using red laser rays for 5 and 20 minutes, resulted in rootsand shoots production from calli of stem and leaf respectively

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is believed to have antioxidant properties. Currently, there are many studies examining compounds that have benefits as antioxidants and are safe for health. However, the sunflower only examined the antioxidants in sunflower seeds. This study aims to determine the antioxidant activity of ethanol extract of flowers, bark, and leaves of sunflowers. The antioxidant activity test using the DPPH method showed the highest antioxidant activity was found in the leaf extract (Helianthus annuus L.) with an IC50 value of 48.841 ppm. The highest phenolic content was found in leaf samples with a value of 35.149 mg gallic acid equivalent/gram extract and the highest determination of flavonoid levels was found in leaf samples with a value of 10.917 mg quercetin equivalent/gram extract.
