An experiment was conducted to examine the effect of restricted feeding under two lighting systems during the rearing period on the initial laying performance of broiler type pullets. The rearing treatments were imposed at nine weeks of age, removed at 22 weeks and the trial was discontinued at 36 weeks of age. The feeding treatments (restricted versus ad lib.) were arranged factorially with the lighting treatments (decreasing versus increasing). Birds reared on restricted feeding reached sexual maturity 16 days later than full fed birds, ate 17 per cent less feed to 22 weeks and gained seven per cent less in body weight to 24 weeks of age and ten per cent less to 36 weeks. Birds reared under the decreasing lighting regime reached sexual maturity at the same age as those reared under increasing lighting, ate five per cent more feed during the rearing and laying periods and gained five per cent more in body weight to 24 weeks. The mean weight of eggs laid between 24 and 34 weeks of age from pullets subjected concurrently to decreasing lighting and restricted feeding was approximately two grams heavier than that of the other three treatment combinations. Mean egg weight was one gram greater in the restricted than in the full fed group, although the difference was not statistically significant. Laying mortality was lower in the restricted fed group than in the full fed group.

Two experiments examined the effects of protein restriction in the growing period on the production of egg type pullets. The protein levels of diets fed in the growing period were 15, 13, and 11 per cent. The treatments were incorporated in factorial designs with nutritional treatments in the laying period involving diet protein levels of 17, 15, and 13 per cent and, for one of the experiments, with housing densities of either 4 sq. ft. or 2 sq. ft. per bird. Restriction of protein during the growing period retarded growth and delayed sexual maturity, but neither of the levels of restriction examined increased subsequent laying performance. Eggs lost due to delays in the onset of production were not compensated for by increases in subsequent production and egg weight was generally depressed by protein restriction. The pattern of egg production was altered by restriction. A 13 per cent protein layer diet introduced at point of lay also reduced bodyweight gain and delayed age at sexual maturity. Interactions between nutritional and housing treatments in the growing and laying periods were apparent in egg production and egg weight.

Two experiments were conducted to measure some of the effects of varying the length and the degree of feed restriction of confinement-reared pullets on laying-house performance. In general, increases in the length of time of restriction were followed by an increase in the number of days required to reach 50 per cent production, an increase in the initial egg size (first 8000 eggs), and a decrease in body weight at either 21 or 22 weeks of age. Feed restriction, in most cases, changed the pattern of egg production so that the birds came into production later than full-fed birds but subsequently "peaked" at a higher rate of production and maintained a higher rate of production for the remainder of the experimental period. Restricting the feed intake of the growing pullets resulted in a substantial feed saving during the growing period, but had no measurable effect on feed consumption during the laying period.

A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25-OHD) with different levels of vitamin D3 (VD3) during the rearing period (1–20 weeks) on laying hen performance, bone quality, and eggshell quality. A total of four hundred 1-day-old Lohman pullets were randomly allotted into a 2 × 2 factorial design with 2 levels of dietary VD3 (300 and 2800 IU/kg) and 2 levels of dietary 25-OHD (0 and 56 μg/kg). Each treatment had five replicates of 20 hens each. Increasing the dietary VD3 level (2800 vs. 300 IU/kg) tended to increase body weight uniformity (0.05 < p < 0.1) at 8 weeks. Dietary VD3 levels and supplementation of 25-OHD during the growing period (1–20 weeks) did not improve the laying performance and eggshell quality (eggshell strength, eggshell thickness, and eggshell relative weight) during the laying period (p > 0.05). Compared with the 300 IU/kg VD3 group, the 2800 IU/kg VD3 group showed higher serum calcium concentration and keel length at 10 weeks (p < 0.05). The addition of 25-OHD significantly increased serum calcium and 25-OHD concentration at 10 and 20 weeks and keel calcified rate at 20 weeks (p < 0.05). Increasing dietary VD3 level (2800 vs. 300 IU/kg) increased tibia ash and phosphorus content at 10 weeks, tibia strength at 72 weeks (p < 0.05), and tended to increase tibia ash content at 72 weeks, tibia calcium content and tibia strength at 20 weeks (0.05 < p < 0.1). Dietary supplementation with 25-OHD increased tibia ash content at 10 weeks, tibia calcium content and tibia strength at 20 weeks (p < 0.05), and tended to increase tibia ash content at 72 weeks (0.05 < p < 0.1). Overall, the results gathered in this study indicate that dietary supplementation of high levels of VD3 and 25-OHD during the growing period improved the tibia quality of laying hens during the early and later laying period, but had no effect on laying performance and eggshell quality during the laying period.
