The media-enhanced teaching techniques became popular in the last years because they stimulate the students' engagement and motivation. The educational movies uploaded on YouTube became nowadays a highly used resource for learning in the academic environment. We conducted an opinion survey among the students at the Faculty of Dental Medicine, “Grigore T. Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Romania, about their agreement and interest in using educational movies as didactic tools, compared with the traditional teaching methods, and about the features they prefer in such materials. The study group included 170 students with average age 20.93 ± 2.751. Most students (91.2%) use didactic movies in their practical training; 77.6% think that the didactic movies from YouTube contain correct scientific information. 74.6% of the students like to learn using didactic movies, 39.7% of them appreciate the oral speech accompanied by PowerPoint Presentations and 46.6% like the oral speech accompanied by written explanations, with no significant differences between genders and age groups. The most popular features of the educational movies are: human narrator (94.7%), who speaks in Romanian (82.4%). The narrator’s speech must be accompanied by animated schemes with explanations (90.6%) and drawings (93.5%). The movie must have a clear structure, evolving from basic to complex (85.9%). The educational movies uploaded on YouTube are an adequate source of information for the dental students; the professionals in universities must survey better the scientific quality of such materials.

Education lies in the foundations of the nation. Providing knowledge to generations, consolidating their future, inspiring them to incarnate benevolence and esteem splendor, valor and good principles has been one of the oldest professions of mankind, the noblest and the most difficult tasks. It is very significant that Albania and its schools have been subject of this paper. The 25-year period of the country’s transition and the opening of the Albanian society to the Western World Modernization brought profound changes to the Albanian education institutions, in terms of the curricula, management and the teaching processes. The greatest part of teachers in Albania was educated during the communist period, where pedant and traditional teaching prevailed, mainly deriving from the Russian Academics. Traditional methods consider teachers as the center of the teaching process; as well as managers and the main and referential source of the scientific information. Novelties in the teaching-learning methods applied by Western Schools focus on student centered teaching; they create a variety of situations in which students evolve critical thinking. These methods have been acquired by teachers but, in the conclusions of our paper we noticed that, occasionally, they applied traditional teaching methods (especially in the scientific subjects). There is still space and worth for discussion regarding traditional teaching methods versus the modern ones. Various scholars have considered traditional teaching as the method developing theoretical thinking, whereas modern teaching develops practical skills, pragmatist and able to be oriented to the frenetic development of the world. Teachers, especially those teaching subjects like mathematics, physics and chemistry, consider traditional teaching to be more serious since students achieve better results in these subjects when outdated teaching methods have been applied. This paper and its conclusions can be considered interesting since confrontation of ideas regarding teaching methods remains a challenge for all teachers.

Modern teaching in the schools of the XXI century is marked by terms of flexibility, innovation and requires the introduction of numerous innovations. Schools are required to modernize the education technologies, and leave the traditional teaching methods. Modern teaching methods reflect the relevant didactic assumptions to improve the effectiveness of teaching. Emphasis will be put the changes, that are designed to create independent and creative personalities. The attention in education is aimed towards individuals who have logical and critical thinking, this is extremely important in the nursing profession. The nurse is the only profile in health workers trained in health care. In the nurses education it is very important the way of realization practical training. This paper analyzes the didactic-methodological elements of demonstration, practical activities and the students exercise, as the very important segment of their preparation for future work. Analyzing these teaching methods, we expect results which will serve as a guide, on how to change the traditional “ex cathedra” teaching, to modern education, that allows independent cognitive activity and interactive participation of all students.

Background and aims. This study aimed to assess the students’ opinion about the efficiency of online teaching and also about the methods and features to be implemented even after this pandemic period would pass. Methods. A questionnaire was formulated in order to evaluate the students’ perception about the teaching methods used by the Faculty of Dentistry, which was distributed through email. Results. The answers of 208 students were analyzed. There were 157 women and 51 men, 119 were from Cluj County, while 89 were from other Romanian counties; 102 of the students were in the 4th year of study, while 62 were still in the preclinical years (1st, 2nd, 3rd), and the rest of 44 of the subjects, were in the 5th or 6th year of study. 85.8% of the respondents were satisfied with the traditional lectures, 51.7% considered that online lectures were more useful than the traditional. 187 (88.6%) of the students were satisfied with the traditional practical activities, while 37 (16.1%) believed that online activities were more useful to them, 111 (52.6%), believed that they were able to communicate better with the teacher during the online lectures. Conclusions. Overall positive responses were reported regarding the acceptability and usability of online learning. The students viewed online learning helpful as a supplement to their learning rather than a replacement for traditional teaching methods.

Background: Vitamin D deficiency is a common medical condition worldwide. In Iran, it has been reported that between 30-90% of people have vitamin D deficiency. However, its distribution in different parts of the country and among different age and regional groups is unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to review the recent literature on vitamin D deficiency in Iran. Methods: The literature review was performed using Web of Science, PubMed-Medline, Scopus and Scientific Information Database (SID) with a cut-off date of November 2016 to identify articles on vitamin D status in Iran published in the last 10 years. Studies in English and Persian that reported vitamin D levels in male and female subjects of all age groups and in healthy populations were included. Results: From 325 studies that were initially retrieved, 82 articles met the inclusion criteria. A high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency was reported, and in some regions, this was reported as >90% and was found in all age groups and in all regions of Iran. Conclusion: This review highlights the very high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in Iran. It will be important to recognize the importance of vitamin D deficiency as a major public health problem in Iran.


There have been significant changes in the numbers, patterns, and circumstances of refugees and in the political landscape to support humanitarianism since the publication of the first edition of this collection. Like the first edition, this volume provides a multidisciplinary perspective on refugee health, tracing the health repercussions on individuals and populations from the drivers of forced mass movements of populations from situations of conflict and other disasters through to the process of resettlement in countries other than their countries of origin. Drawing on the expertise of academics, practitioners, and UN frontline experts, the collection covers three main aspects of refugee health: the concepts, definitions, and context from a human rights, humanitarianism, and social determinants of health perspective; the intersection of vulnerabilities across age groups and settings; and the ethical challenges for practitioners and researchers working with forcibly displaced populations seeking to resettle. The collection concludes with an analysis of the role of the media in shaping our perceptions of refugees and the impact on policy and access to care.

Background: Acceleration of mass vaccination strategies is the only pathway to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic. Healthcare professionals and students have a key role in shaping public opinion about vaccines. This study aimed to evaluate the attitudes of dental students globally towards COVID-19 vaccines and explore the potential drivers for students’ acceptance levels. Methods: A global cross-sectional study was carried out in February 2021 using an online questionnaire. The study was liaised by the scientific committee of the International Association of Dental Students (IADS), and data were collected through the national and local coordinators of IADS member organizations. The dependent variable was the willingness to take the COVID-19 vaccine, and the independent variables included demographic characteristics, COVID-19-related experience, and the drivers of COVID-19 vaccine-related attitude suggested by the WHO SAGE. Results: A total of 6639 students from 22 countries, representing all world regions, responded to the questionnaire properly. Their mean age was 22.1 ± 2.8 (17–40) years, and the majority were females (70.5%), in clinical years (66.8%), and from upper-middle-income economies (45.7%). In general, 22.5% of dental students worldwide were hesitant, and 13.9% rejected COVID-19 vaccines. The students in low- and lower-middle-income (LLMI) economies had significantly higher levels of vaccine hesitancy compared to their peers in upper-middle- and high-income (UMHI) economies (30.4% vs. 19.8%; p < 0.01). Conclusions: The global acceptance level of dental students for COVID-19 vaccines was suboptimal, and their worrisome level of vaccine hesitancy was influenced by the socioeconomic context where the dental students live and study. The media and social media, public figures, insufficient knowledge about vaccines, and mistrust of governments and the pharmaceutical industry were barriers to vaccination. The findings of this study call for further implementation of epidemiology (infectious diseases) education within undergraduate dental curricula.

Objective. To assess the face, content, and construct validity of the Voxel-Man TempoSurg Virtual Reality simulator. Participants and Methods. 74 ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgeons participated. They were assigned to one of two groups according to their level of expertise: the expert group (n=16) and the novice group (n=58). The participants performed four temporal bone dissection tasks on the simulator. Performances were assessed by a global score and then compared to assess the construct validity of the simulator. Finally, the expert group assessed the face and content validity by means of a five-point Likert-type scale. Results. experienced surgeons performed better (p<.01) and faster (p<.001) than the novices. However, the groups did not differ in terms of bone volume removed (p=.11) or number of injuries (p=.37). 93.7% of experienced surgeons stated they would recommend this simulator for anatomical learning. Most (87.5%) also thought that it could be integrated into surgical training. Conclusion. The Voxel-Man TempoSurg Virtual Reality simulator constitutes an interesting complementary tool to traditional teaching methods for training in otologic surgery.
