Mate-finding behaviour by Calanus marshallae Frost, 1974, was observed and video recorded in a 1 m diameter kreisel. Newly moulted females signal to males by depositing vertical pheromone trails many tens of centimetres long. Males search for trails along primarily horizontal trajectories. The orthogonality of signal trace and search trail trajectory maximizes the chance of intersection. Males often initiate a dance of rapid, tight turns upon encountering a pheromone trail, then waggle down it (chase swimming) to the signalling female. She jumps away after initial contact, and the male follows. Many successive approach, bump and jump sequences follow, with mating eventually ensuing. The actual copulatory clasp and spermatophore transfer were not observed, although a few instances of brief attachment and tandem swimming were seen. Male dances occur at times when chase swimming does not follow, and the function of dances is not yet known.

On the data of long-term surveys, mean biomass of plankton in the epipelagic layer of the Bering Sea is evaluated as 821.3 mg/m3 (1058.2 mg/m3 in shelf areas and 760.6 mg/m3 in the deep-water areas) and the stock as 245.1•106 t WW (64.4 • 106 t over the shelf and 180.7 • 106 t in the deep-water sea). By taxa, the average annual portions are: 55.1 % for copepods, 26.3 % for arrowworms, 10.8 % for euphausiids, 3.2 % for medusas, and 2.9 % for amphipods. The dominant species are the arrowworm Sagitta elegans (26.3 %) and the copepod Eucalanus bungii (19.7 %); other mass species are: large-sized copepods Neocalanus cristatus (10.4 %), Neocalanus plumchrus + Neocalanus flemingeri (7.8 %) and Calanus glacialis + Calanus marshallae (5.1 %), euphausiids Thysanoessa raschii (3.5 %) and Thysanoessa longipes (3.4 %), small-sized copepods Metridia pacifica (3.5 %) and Oithona similis (3.5 %), medusa Aglantha digitale (3.2 %).

Feeding of fish juveniles in the eastern Bering Sea is investigated for the periods of 2003-2006 considered as relatively «warm» and 2007-2012 considered as relatively «cold». Small- and medium-sized zooplankton was the dominant prey in the 2003-2006, in particular copepods prevailed in the food of walleye pollock (41.5 %), pacific herring (48.3 %), and sand lance (71.7 %) juveniles, which in turn were the prey for pollock, herring and cod yearlings and other predators. On the contrary, large-sized zooplankton was more abundant in the 2007-2012, so arrowwarms ( Sagitta sp.), large-sized copepods (in particular Calanus marshallae ), euphausiids (mainly Thysanoessa raschii ), hyperiids, and pteropods were the prey for young fish: C. marshallae - for juveniles of pollock (40-45 % by weight) and capelin (32-34 %), Th. raschii - for yearlings of pollock (51 %) and herring (36-46 %), cold-water hyperiid T. libellula - for adult pollock (24 %), juvenile cod (9-18 %) and juvenile herring (9-11 %), whereas portion of fish in the diets was insignificant. In the warm period (2003-2006), juvenile pollock, herring, sand lance and capelin were zooplankton-eaters with the diets similarity 67 %, while yearlings of pollock and juveniles of cod, herring, sandfish, and atka mackerel were fish-eaters preying upon pollock juveniles. In the cold period (2007-2012), the diets of juvenile pollock, juvenile and adult capelin, and juvenile sand lance were also similar at 85-70 % but they preferred large-sized copepods and euphausiids ( C. marshallae and Th. raschii ), while yearlings of pollock, yearlings and adults of herring, and juveniles of sand fish and cod had the diets of 70 % similarity with Th. raschii prevalence. Feeding intensity was high for all species: the mean stomach fullness was 150-200 ‱ for pollock juveniles and yearlings, 200-250 ‱ for cod juveniles, 200-258 ‱ for sand lance juveniles, 302 ‱ for herring juveniles, and 178-250 ‱ for juvenile atka mackerel. The fullness had diurnal rhythm with three peaks: at noon - up to 179 ‱, in evening - up to 213 ‱, and at night - up to 204 ‱ (the data for walleye pollock juveniles in «cold» years only). Daily food ration of juvenile pollock is estimated as 6.7 % of its body weight in the «warm» years and 7.0 % in the «cold» years.

The diet of the Pacific Sand Lance (Ammodytes hexapterus) was quantified from the stomach contents of 115 Pacific Sand Lance caught in the Strait of Georgia and Saanich Inlet (Vancouver Island) in the Salish Sea, British Columbia, in the spring and summer of 1966, in the Strait of Georgia in the spring and summer of 1967, and in the Strait of Georgia and Saanich Inlet in the spring and summer of 1968. There were 12 major taxa of prey in diets, 8 of which were Crustacea. Based on an index of relative importance, copepods were the dominant prey in 1966 and 1968, but not in 1967, when cladocerans, larvaceans, and teleosts also were common. The copepods Pseudocalanus spp. and Calanus marshallae were the only taxa to appear in diets in all three years. Pseudocalanus dominated the copepod component of diets in 1966, when sampling occurred in July; unspecified copepod nauplii (an early larval stage) were dominant in 1967 and 1968, when sampling occurred earlier (April to June). With the profound changes that have occurred in the Salish Sea over recent decades, these data can serve as a baseline for comparison.
