scholarly journals EFL Matriculation Exams for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students: Polish and Israeli Experiences

In recent decades the significance of English as a lingua franca has been systematically growing: it is no longer simply the native language of some nations but is rather the language of science, business, education, and leisure around the world. Not surprisingly, there is a great demand to learn and know this language, which is mirrored by the importance placed on English teaching in national curricula and its presence as a mandatory exam subject in secondary education. While most students can follow such education programs smoothly, the group of D/deaf and hard of hearing learners (D/HoH) meet serious challenges when learning a foreign language without auditory input and require specific support and accommodations to meet the curricula requirements. This paper presents the issue of teaching English as a foreign language to D/HoH students in the context of their matriculation exams in two countries whose educational systems share some historical roots: Poland and Israel. The method used was document analysis in the framework of the cultural contexts of two educational systems. The results show similarities for educational expectations but also differences concerning the type and scope of accommodations for D/HoH students. The analysis leads to pedagogical recommendations for improving the quality of D/HoH students’ education in these two countries.

The effectiveness of economies of developed countries is based on the high quality of knowledge. As a resutl the quality and balanced education determines the rating of a state in the world and serves as a driving force of national economic development. New approaches, methods, and tools are necessary for the implementation of the modern management system in educational organizations. The main purpose of this chapter is to determine using the lean method in foreign language teaching. The lean method is new in educational systems, but it is used in different spheres of industries all over the world. This chapter shows the history, its implementation, experiments, and how it can be used and developed further. Lean in education will create a clear understanding of its importance on lean process and increase the motivations of administrations, teachers, and students.

The paper presents multilingualism and multiculturalism as one of the main aims of the European Union (EU) and deals with the issue of political and cultural globalization. More and more young people describe themselves as cosmopolites. Multiculturalism is especially noticeable in the sphere of languages. Languages are fundamental for Europeans wanting to work together. They go to the very heart of the unity in diversity of the EU. It is important to nurture and to promote our linguistic heritage in the Member States but we also need to understand each other, our neighbours, our partners in the EU. Speaking many languages makes businesses and citizens more competitive and more mobile. The EU policy of official multilingualism as a deliberate tool of government is unique in the world. The EU sees the use of its citizens’ languages as one of the factors which make it more transparent, more legitimate and more efficient. At the level of culture and of enhancing the quality of life, too, the EU works actively to promote the wider knowledge and use of all its official languages throughout the Union. The ability to speak foreign language and multiculturalism are inseparable parts of the EU integrations. There are certain skills and competences that a multilingual, multicultural European citizen must acquire in order to become a full‐fledged EU member. Vis daugiau jaunų žmonių save apibūdina kosmopolitais. Daugiakultūriškumas ypač pastebimas kalbų srityje. Kalbos labai svarbios europiečiams, norintiems bendradarbiauti. Būtent kalbos sudaro Europos vientisumo ir skirtingumo ašį. Todėl visos Europos Sąjungos (ES) šalys narės privalo ne tik tausoti ir plėtoti savo kalbos paveldą, bet ir stengtis suprasti vienos kitas, savo kaimynes, ES partneres. Gebėjimas bendrauti keliomis kalbomis padeda plėtotis ne tik verslo sričiai, jis padeda ES piliečiams tapti konkurencingesniems ir mobilesniems. ES valdžios taikoma oficialaus daugiakultūriškumo politika – vienintelė pasaulyje. ES valstybinių kalbų vartojimą laiko vienu iš šalies skaidrumo, didesnio teisingumo ir produktyvumo veiksnių. Kultūros ir gyvenimo kokybės stiprinimo lygmeniu ES aktyviai dirba skatindama mokymąsi ir visų Sąjungos valstybinių kalbų vartojimą. Gebėjimas kalbėti keliomis kalbomis bei daugiakultūriškumas – neatsiejama eurointegracijos dalis. Yra tam tikrų gabumų ir kompetencijų, kurios privalomos daugiakultūriam, daugiakalbiam europiečiui, norinčiam tapti visaverčiu ES piliečiu.

Subtitling is an effective way to provide dialogues or narrative for a movie. The benefit is for people to enjoy the film even though its different from their native language. They enjoy movies over the world with different countries and styles by the dialogues translated. This research aims to know the strategy of responding to arguing in the file's subtitle titled Becoming Jane, to find out the translation techniques used by the translator, and to assess the translation quality in terms of the accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The research method is descriptive qualitative method with "Becoming Jane" movie and its subtitles as the data. Data were collected from document analysis and focus group discussions with the score of the accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The results indicate that the character used a strategy of agreeing, persisting, and complying. While six methods of translation were found, namely literal, modulation, established equivalence, borrowing, and adaptation. The quality of the translation of the strategy of responding to speech acts has been categorized as less accurate, less acceptable, and moderate in terms of readability

IntroductionEducational systems are going through in many countries of the world, including in Poland, the crisis. Reforms to the educational systems, giving them a new shape and image, with revised objectives and tasks.Aim. Was the aim of work qualification of the professional teachers’ attitudes the physical education, which have on quality the direct and indirect influence the education and the children and youth's education.Material and method. It investigations were subjected was the teachers of physical education (woman – N = 282; men – N = 298) with professional full qualifications working at elementary schools, secondary-school and secondary in Poznań (N = 204), Wrocław (N = 171) and Łódź (N = 205). It totality was has given an examination was 580 teachers.The investigations were polled with the help of the relating the attitudes of professional teachers of physical education questionnaire.Results. In result of conducted analysis of results of investigations affirm, that the studied teachers’ decided majority, first of all the women be characterized desirable and the positive professional attitudes, social and educational.Conclusions. The attitude of professional teachers of physical education can be considered satisfactory, and hence giving the chance for a better quality of education and upbringing of children and young people. However, there is a dissonance between declared attitudes and the actual proceedings for many teachers.

Abstract The article describes 5 countries from the world: South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Finland that have the best and unusual educational systems. Thanks to the new approach to the teaching, students become very well-educated when graduate. The text emphasises the importance of foreign language knowledge. It is very interesting how much different is the approach to students in Asian countries and in Finland but both systems eventually provide very good education level to their students. The another part of the article bases for characteristic of two other EU countries – Romania and Poland. In these countries, the internal educational systems are quite similar to each other and guarantee their students very good education level. Thanks to the attendance in Erasmus exchange programme, Romanian and Polish students can broaden their mind abroad.

The philosophical content in the structure of scientific concepts is connected with the scientific picture of the world, through it – with the worldview paradigm. Taking into account this circumstance has a positive effect on the quality of scientific research. The relevance of the problem is confirmed by the example of the analysis of one of the fundamental concepts of economic science – the concept of “economic activity”. To analyze the transformation of this concept, the methods of sociophilosophical analysis are used: the comparative method, the system and dialectical approaches, the hermeneutic method, the method. The connection of the change in the philosophical content of the concept of “economic activity” with the change of scientific pictures of the world from antiquity to the present is revealed. The negative side of the accumulation of the meanings of the concept of “economic activity” in the course of its historical development is shown. The productive vector of economic theory development is indicated by clarifying the philosophical content in the structure of its concepts. The indicated principles can be used in the development of a universal method of studying the language of science in various fields of social and humanitarian knowledge.

Although precise numbers are lacking, in the world at large there may be more multilinguals than monolinguals when we define “multilingualism” as the regular use of two or more languages. This prominence of multilingualism in the world has its consequences, of course, for educational systems (for example, with respect to foreign language teaching), but also for psycholinguistic research, because the language processing system might be differently organised in monolinguals and bilinguals. This article discusses structural, process, and context/control issues with respect to the multilingual lexicon, addressing the following questions: How are words stored in the mental lexicon of multilinguals? How does a multilingual retrieve words in reading, listening, and speaking? What is the effect of context and cognitive control on multilingual processing? What models have been proposed to account for the available data? What can cognitive neuroscience contribute to bilingualism? The article also looks at the process of multilingual word recognition, focusing on visual modality, auditory modality, models of bilingual word processing, multilingual word production, and contributions of cognitive neuroscience.

The challenges associated with the ageing population are important and continuous growth across the world, especially in Europe, the continent with the oldest population. The fundamental objective of active ageing interventions is to optimise opportunities for health, participation and security so as to increase the quality of life of the population with ageing. The Active Ageing Index is a flexible comparative analysis tool that has the mission to help promote and implement active ageing. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to analyse the phenomenon of active ageing from the perspective of the active ageing index in the European area. The methodology used consisted of document analysis, study for several countries in the European space such as: Italy, Germany, Poland, Spain, Romania, analysis and comparison of statistic data. The results obtained show that the role of this active ageing index is to capture the various facets of active ageing, measuring the contribution of older people (women and men) to economic and social life and to the extent to which the environment in which they live stimulates them in this regard to provide more active participation in employment, social life and to lead independent lives.

Abstract Criminal justice systems throughout the world are becoming increasingly aware of the challenges posed by language barriers. However, that awareness is still limited to the realm of court proceedings, whereas legislation aiming to protect language rights of foreign prisoners is scarce and vague. In the particular case of Spain, only a few provisions in the Prison Rules envisage the notion of language assistance, making it explicit that such support is to be provided by other prisoners or staff. This paper aims to analyze the implications of an underdeveloped language policy in the realm of Spanish penitentiary institutions, focusing on how the specific measures stemming from that policy affect the rights of imprisoned foreign nationals. Against the backdrop of the limited legislative coverage of language issues, communication strategies seem to be based on the linguistic assimilation of foreign language-speaking inmates, either to communicate directly with staff or to serve as interpreters for newly arrived fellow inmates. Causes and consequences of these strategies are discussed in this paper, including an analysis of the quality of the interpretations that nonprofessional prisoner-interpreters are able to provide.
