Damage detection through an inverse optimization problem has been investigated by many researchers. Recently, Modal Strain Energy (MSE) has been utilized as an index (MSEBI) for damage localization that serves to guide the optimization. This guided approach considerably reduces the computational cost and increases the accuracy of optimization. Although this index mostly exhibits an acceptable performance, it fails to find some damaged elements' locations in some cases. The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly, a Graph-based Adaptive Threshold (GAT) is proposed to identify some of those elements that are not detected by basic MSEBI. GAT relies on the concepts from graph theory and MSE working as a simple anomaly detection technique. Secondly, an Improved version of the Water Strider Algorithm (IWSA) is introduced, applied to the damage detection problems with incomplete modal data and noise-contaminated inputs. Several optimization algorithms, including the newly-established Water Strider Algorithm (WSA), are utilized to test the proposed method. The investigations on several damage detection problems demonstrate the GAT and IWSA's satisfactory performance compared to the previous methods.

The paper presents an effective damage detection method of complex composite structures. It can be carried out through the experimental modal analysis of the damaged structure. The method using the improved Cross Modal Strain Energy (CMSE) technique and Niche GA has many advantages compared with other damage detection methods. The CMSE method can use any modes of the structure and the modes don’t need to be normalized or consistent in scale. The Niche GA improves the efficiency of the calculation and enhances the capacity of identifying structural damage localization. The model is the composite material airfoil case. The numerical results show that the method proposed in this paper is successful for damage detection of complex structures.

This paper presents a multistage multipass method to identify the damage location of a continuous bridge from the response of a vehicle moving on the rough road surface of the bridge. The vehicle runs over the bridge several times at different velocities and the corresponding responses of the vehicle can be obtained. The vertical accelerations of the vehicle running on the intact and damaged bridges are used for identification. The multistage damage detection method is implemented by the modal strain energy based method and genetic algorithm. The modal strain energy based method estimates the damage location by calculating a damage indicator from the frequencies extracted from the vehicle responses of both the intact and damaged states of the bridge. At the second stage, the identification problem is transformed into a global optimization problem and is solved by genetic algorithm techniques. For each pass of the vehicle, the method can identify the location of the damage until it is determined with acceptable accuracy. A two-span continuous bridge is used to verify the method. The numerical results show that this method can identify the location of damage reasonably well.
