The use of modified lime slurry as a sacrificial layer to protect the original porous substrate has a long tradition in the practice of building and monument conservation in Austria. This paper presents the results of analyses performed on the Natural History Museum Vienna to get more insight into the long-term performance of this conservation method. Stone surfaces on the facade and roof area, covered with an acrylic tempered lime sacrificial layer and subsequently made water-repellent, were tested in situ and in the laboratory. Whilst coatings in the exposed zones were completely vanished in certain areas, the samples from the facade were in a good condition even after nearly twenty years of exposure. Hydrophobic activity could be verified up to a depth of five mm in the porous stone substrates. Despite the general good state of preservation of most surfaces, the existence of highly hydrophobic substrates will definitely restrict the implementation of any future sustainable conservation effort.

Maintenance is the process of preserving the good condition of a system to ensure its reliability and availability to perform specific operations. The way maintenance is nowadays performed in industry is changing thanks to the increasing availability of data and condition assessment methods. Soft sensors have been widely used over last years to monitor industrial processes and to predict process variables that are difficult to measured. The main objective of this study is to monitor and evaluate the condition of the compressor in a particular industrial gas turbine by developing a soft sensor following an autoencoder architecture. The data used to monitor and analyze its condition were captured by several sensors located along the compressor for around five years. The condition assessment of an industrial gas turbine compressor reveals significant changes over time, as well as a drift in its performance. These results lead to a qualitative indicator of the compressor behavior in long-term performance.

The long-term performance of hybrid anode corrosion protection systems (UK invention disclosed in Patent GB2426008B) was investigated on six bridge structures as part of a holistic approach to corrosion risk management, using the performance criteria in ISO BS EN 12696:2016. The aim of the study was to review the effectiveness of current design approaches to meet the residual service life when the anodes are operating in the galvanic phase. This was achieved by analysing data on the general condition of the structures, the ongoing performance of the installed hybrid anodes, and assessing the subsequent corrosion risk. It was found that the six structures were generally in good condition, 1 to 8 years after refurbishment works, with low associated corrosion risk in areas protected by the hybrid anode systems. This is a positive finding for the wider implementation of hybrid anode systems as an alternative corrosion management technique. The reinforcement in the protected areas remained predominately in a passive condition, with calculated corrosion rates below the ISO 12696:2016 recommended threshold of 2mA/m2.
