Abstract This paper presents a multi-condition design method for the aircraft heat exchanger (HEX), marking with light weight, compactness and wide range of working conditions. The quasi-traversal genetic algorithm (QT-GA) method is introduced to obtain the optimal values of five structural parameters including the height, the tube diameter, the tube pitch, and the tube rows. The QT-GA method solves the deficiency of the conventional GA in the convergence, and gives a clear correlation between design variables and outputs. Pressure drops, heat transfer and the weight of the HEX are combined in a single objective function of GA in the HEX design, thus the optimal structure of the HEX suitable for all the working conditions can be directly obtained. After optimization, the weight of the HEX is reduced to 2.250 kg, more than 20% lower than a common weight of around 3 kg. Based on the optimal structure, the off-design performance of the HEX is further analyzed. Results show that the extreme working conditions for the heat transfer and the pressure drops are not consistent. It proves the advance of the multi-condition design method over traditional single-condition design method. In general, the proposed QT-GA design method is an efficient way to solve the multi-condition problems related to the aircraft HEX or other energy systems.

Ultra-High Pressure Vessel (UHPV) with self-protective Flat Steel Ribbons (FSR) wound and Tooth-Locked Quick-Actuating (TLQA) end closure is a new type of vessel developed in recent years. When the structural parameters of its TLQA and Buttress Thread (BT) end closure are determined using the ordinary engineering design method, Design by Analysis (DBA) shows that the requirement on fatigue life of this unique UHPV could hardly be satisfied. To solve the above problem, an integrated FE modeling method has been proposed in this paper. To investigate the fatigue life of TLQA and BT end closures of a full-scale unique UHPV, a three-dimensional (3-D) Finite Element (FE) solid model and a two-dimensional (2-D) FE axisymmetric model are built in FE software ANSYS, respectively., Nonlinear FE analysis and orthogonal testing are both conducted to obtain the optimum structure strength, in which the peak stress in the TLQA or BT end closure of the unique UHPV is taken as an optimal target. The important parameters, such as root structure of teeth, contact pressure between the pre-stressed collar and the cylinder end, the knuckle radius, the buttress thread profile and the local structure of the cylinder, are optimized. As a result, both the stress distribution at the root of teeth and the axial load carried by each thread are improved. Therefore, the load-carrying capacity of the end closure has been reinforced and the fatigue life of unique UHPV has been extended.

A method of designing onedimensional photonic crystal is presented from the perspective of Z-domain and digital signal processing. The optical structure and structural parameters for the desired filtering spectrum in reflection can be directly obtained by using the design method. A design example is given in the paper to verify the method.

Film adaptation is a popular approach to game design, but it prioritizes blockbuster films and conventional “game-like” qualities of those films, such as shooting, racing, or spatial exploration. This leads to adaptations that tend to use the aesthetics and narratives of films, but which miss out on potential design explorations of more complex cinematic qualities. In this article, I propose an experimental game design method that prioritizes an unconventional selection of films alongside strict game design constraints to explore tensions and affinities between cinema and videogames. By applying this design method and documenting the process and results, I am able both to present an experimental set of videogame film adaptations, along with potentially generative design and development themes. In the end, the project serves as an illustration of the nature of adaptation itself: a series of pointed compromises between the source and the new work.

This paper presents a method for design multi-section proportional directional valve Throttle grooves with ANN method, which aims at getting a better flow stability. There exists a coupling matter during the opening and closing process between the throttling notches, so that it’s difficult to parameterize the complex flow field characteristics Cd and the structure boundary of the spool grooves. However, in this paper, an ANN was built with data from CFD results, while the typical structural parameters (U type, the O-type and C-type), operating parameters was input vectors, the discharge coefficient as output vectors. Meanwhile, all of the needed data is taken from the three-dimensional CFD analysis, which are organized properly and verified by a bench scale test on a rig. Then, with throttling stiffness as optimization objective to evaluate flow stability, an optimal design process is carried out to optimize to optimize the structure of coupling grooves with ANN models and genetic algorithm. Ultimately, the optimized structure is verified better by the physical test on test rig, therefore, the significance of design method is proved.

To reduce the cavitation occurring on valve plate of typical Swashplate piston pump, an optimization design method was introduced to quantitively analyse the accurate relationship between structural jet grooves parameters and cavitation.Using the CFD method, the sunking and discharging process in piston pump was simulated dynamically. The damp grooves structure effect on both jet angle and pressure shock were analysed visually with a series of different parametrical grooves.By establishing parametrical damp groove model, the piston pumps dynamic analysis was integrated with the technologies of CFD analysis, experimental design and approximation model, etc.The mathematical model of plunger pressure in oil back period, jet angle and structural parameters of damp groove were established in the form of second-order RSM model. The damp groove structure of valve plate was optimized on the basis of the RSM model.Test data show that the anti-cavitation performance of optimized valve plate was increased obviouslyAnd this method provided theoretical foundation for the structure design of damp groove.

AbstractIn recent years, generative design methods are widely used to guide urban or architectural design. Some performance-based generative design methods also combine simulation and optimization algorithms to obtain optimal solutions. In this paper, a performance-based automatic generative design method was proposed to incorporate deep reinforcement learning (DRL) and computer vision for urban planning through a case study to generate an urban block based on its direct sunlight hours, solar heat gains as well as the aesthetics of the layout. The method was tested on the redesign of an old industrial district located in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China. A DRL agent - deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) agent - was trained to guide the generation of the schemes. The agent arranges one building in the site at one time in a training episode according to the observation. Rhino/Grasshopper and a computer vision algorithm, Hough Transform, were used to evaluate the performance and aesthetics, respectively. After about 150 h of training, the proposed method generated 2179 satisfactory design solutions. Episode 1936 which had the highest reward has been chosen as the final solution after manual adjustment. The test results have proven that the method is a potentially effective way for assisting urban design.

The constant need for improvement drives humans to look for the best possible option in every field. Computer Aided Design (CAD) is no exception, to follow the best method of designing a product and finalizing it, researchers came up with an idea to generate multiple designs using fixed input values and finalizing the most appropriate one. The objective is achieved using an iterative design process based on algorithms by a specific software. Generative design introduces a new experience based on the Integration of machine dynamics in the manufacturing of objects and about experience. In this work generative design method was investigated on an articulated rod, one of the most important components of the rotary engine, to effectively improve the overall working performance of the engine and enhance its performance by decreasing its mass. Since fuel consumption by the machine can be greatly reduced by lowering the mass, so the goal is to minimize the weight of the rod while mechanical characteristics have to be within the acceptable values. Also, finite element analysis (FEA) was investigated on the part as to ensure the reliability of the rod before and after optimization.
