The paper deals with the programming and introducing the function of a new program for designing gear drives. The main goal of the program is to provide the exact machine setting parameters for producing a given gear drive. The software is a multi purpose tool for fast industrial calculations and pre-analysis.

The second article part is devoted to the calculation of machine settings for Hypoid gear-drive pinions being generated by “Formate” and “Helixform” cutting methods. The solution is based on a local synthesis method by following assumptions: (1) the member-gear surfaceΣ2 is given (the surface Σ2 becomes known after the determination of its machine settings, see article part 1): (2) the being obtained machine settings for the pinion must guarantee: (a) that the member-gear surface Σ2 will be in contact with the pinion surface Σ1 at a choosen point M, (b) that at M and in the vicinity of M prescribed conditions of meshing will be provided.

To develop a good quality of hypoid gear drive, the authors test the vibration and noise of two kinds of hypoid gear drives under different working conditions. The test object is a pair of hypoid gear drive used in the back axle of one minivan and a designed hypoid gear drive with high teeth based on the former. The results indicate that the hypoid gear drive with high teeth has lower vibration and noise.

Abstract The worm and worm-gear tooth surfaces of existing design of Flender gear drive are in line contact at every instant and the gear drive is very sensitive to misalignment. Errors of alignment cause the shift of the bearing contact and transmission errors. The authors propose : (1) Methods for computerized simulation of meshing and contact of misaligned worm-gear drives of existing design (2) Methods of modification of geometry of worm-gear drives that enable to localize and stabilize the bearing contact and reduce the sensitivity of drives to misalignment (3) Methods for computerized simulation of meshing and contact of worm-gear drives with modified geometry The proposed approach was applied as well for the involute (David Brown) and Klingelnberg type of worm-gear drives. Numerical examples that illustrate the developed theory are provided.

Based on the previously developed mathematical model of a series of recess action (RA) worm gear drive (i.e., semi RA, full RA, and standard proportional tooth types) with double-depth teeth, the tooth contact analysis (TCA) technique is utilized to investigate the kinematic error (KE), contact ratio (CR), average contact ratio (ACR), instantaneous contact teeth (ICT) under different assembly conditions. Besides, the bearing contact and contact ellipse are studied by applying the surface topology method. Three numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the influence of the assembly errors and design parameters of the RA worm gear drive on the KE, CR, ACR, ICT, and contact patterns.

The design and simulation of meshing of a single enveloping worm-gear drive with a localized bearing contact is considered. The bearing contact has a longitudinal direction and two branches of contact path. The purpose of localization is to reduce the sensitivity of the worm-gear drive to misalignment. The author’s approach for localization of bearing contact is based on the proper mismatch of the surfaces of the hob and drive worm. The developed computer program allows the investigation of the influence of misalignment on the shift of the bearing contact and the determination of the transmission errors and the contact ratio. The developed approach has been applied for K type of single-enveloping worm-gear drives and the developed theory is illustrated with a numerical example. [S1050-0472(00)00502-X]

A new approach for generation of functions based on application of a multi-gear drive is proposed. The approach provides solution to the functional Ψ(α) = gn(gn−1(⋯(g1(α)))) wherein Ψ(α) is the function assigned for generation and gi(α), i = 1,⋯,n, is the transmission function of pair i of conjugated non-circular gears. The specifics characteristics of the proposed approach are: (a) integrated impact by application of n synchronized gear drives, (b) favourable shape of centrodes, and (c) observation of limits of pressure angle. The developed theory is illustrated with several detailed numerical examples.

In this paper, a double-side milling method on spiral bevel gear is proposed. First, according to the tooth taper processed by double-side milling method, the influence of dedendum angle on the tooth taper was researched. Taking cut parameters into comprehensive consideration, the geometric parameters were designed through the inclination of root line and modified mean point in which machine setting parameters calculated was selected. Only the modified mean point met the meshing equation, and the error of pressure angle would increase as far away from the modified mean point in tooth line. The error would lead to bias in contact. A helical correction motion was introduced and the influence of helical motion coefficient on tooth surface topology was studied. Based on the meshing performance, a suitable coefficient was calculated. Finally, an example was illustrated. The experimental results were consistent with the theoretical analysis. The validity of the proposed method is verified.

In this study, a mesh stiffness model of spur gear drives considering the tooth corrosion effect, which is based on Ishikawa model, is proposed. The fidelity of mesh stiffness based on the proposed model is checked by comparing the result with a benchmark result from the reference and the effect of the tooth corrosion on mesh stiffness is analyzed. The prediction indicates mesh stiffness is insensitive to the tooth corrosion, but this conclusion has a signification for assessing the stability of inherent properties of a spur gear drive when the tooth corrosion is produced.

Abstract With the knowledge of the advantageous characteristics of the cylindrical worm gear drives having arched profile in axial section and the conical worm gear drives having linear profile in axial section, a new geometric type conical worm gear drive has been designed and then manufactured, that is the conical worm gear drive having arched profile in axial section. Beside similar charging and marginal conditions in case of the same geometric spiroid worm gear drives having arched profile and having linear profile in axial section we have done comparative finite element method analysis for awarding of the strains, deformations and stresses of this gear drives.
