- The article focuses the strongly criticized use of psychometric tests in the evaluation of children sexual abuse. The use of inventories and projective techniques as Rorschach, thematic and design-based tests, is useful to assess the psychic consequences after the abuse and to plan a therapeutic intervention. But the reliability and the discriminant validity of the indicators derived from the tests are reduced when the aim of the assessment is to search for signs of an hypothesized abuse. Results of empirical studies regarding these issues are reported, suggesting that a proper use of psychometric tests in juridical settings requests interpretive caution.Key words: sexual abuse, assessment, psychometric tests, projective techniques.Parole chiave: abuso sessuale, assessment, test psicometrici, tecniche proiettive.

- This article analyzes the encounter between children who are victims of sexual abuse within the family and the judicial system; it shows the various conditions that could determine forms of secondary victimization. Various phases are analyzed in which the minor is involved: the disclosure of abuse, the interrogation, the psychological forensic assessment and the legal assistance to the victim. The purpose of this article is both to make clear that in cases of sexual abuse different procedures may be adopted before different judicial authorities and supply useful information to different protagonists to integrate their competencies with the aim of effective protection of victims.Key words: sexual abuse, disclosure, psychological forensic assessment, victimization.Parole chiave: abuso sessuale, rivelazione, perizia psicologica, vittimizzazione.

- This study analyses 37 questionnaires administered to the same number of auxiliaries of the Judge for the preliminary investigations with reference to the probatory incident on alleged minor victims of sexual abuse. The research wants to examine the real care and protection measures of the alleged victims during the period of time that goes from revelation to judicial hearing and to the moment of the same hearing. Besides, it aims to verify to what extent hearing is a hardship for the child and the eventual correlations between that and some variables about the procedures for the collection of witness, the need of protection and the setting features. The results show, even within the judicial course, a low, late or failed activation of the assistance, protection and care already provided by national rules and international conventions.Key words: auxiliary, probatory procedure, protected hearing, interview.Parole chiave: ausiliario, incidente probatorio, audizione protetta, intervista.

Clergy-perpetrated sexual abuse (CPSA) during childhood represents a tragic betrayal of trust that inflicts damage on the survivor, the family, and the parish community. Survivors often report CPSA has a disturbing impact on their self-identity. Despite intense media coverage of clergy abuse globally in the Catholic Church (and other faith communities) over several decades, relatively few empirical studies have been conducted with survivors. Beyond clinical observations and advocacy group reports, very little is known about survivors’ perceptions of how the abuse impacted their long-term self-identity. Using data collected during the 2010 Health and Well-Being Survey, this qualitative analysis represents one of the first large-scale studies with a non-clinical sample of adult male survivors of CPSA from childhood ( N = 205). The negative effects of the sexual abuse on participants were expressed across six domains of self-identity: (a) total self, (b) psychological self, (c) relational self, (d) gendered self, (e) aspirational self, and (f) spiritual self. These findings highlight the range and depth of self-suffering inflicted by this pernicious form of sexual violence. The findings are useful for developing clinical services for survivors, shaping public and institutional policies to address clergy-perpetrated sexual abuse, and guiding future research with this population.

False memory syndrome (FMS) is described as a serious form of psychopathology characterized by strongly believed pseudomemories of childhood sexual abuse. A literature review revealed four clusters of symptoms underlying the syndrome regarding victims' belief in their memories of abuse and their identity as survivors, their current interpersonal relationships, their trauma symptoms across the lifespan, and the characteristics of their therapy experiences. The validity of these clusters was examined using data from a community sample of 113 women who identified themselves as survivors of girlhood sexual abuse. Examining the discriminant validity of these criteria revealed that participants who had recovered memories of their abuse (n = 51), and who could therefore potentially have FMS, generally did not differ from participants with continuous memories (n = 49) on indicators of these criteria. Correlational analyses also indicated that these criteria typically failed to converge. Further, despite frequent claims that FMS is occurring in epidemic proportions, only 3.9%-13.6% of the women with a recovered memory satisfied the diagnostic criteria, and women with continuous memories were equally unlikely to meet these criteria. The implications of these findings for FMS theory and the delayed-memory debate more generally are discussed.

- In this article research is briefly reviewed on investigative interview techniques in children alleged victims of child sexual abuse. It is shown that such techniques represent a crucial factor in determining the accuracy and reliability of the witness report. Research in the psychology of eyewitness testimony provides important elements to understand which techniques are examples of good and which are examples of bad practice, which errors are commonly made in interviews, and which are the negative consequences of such common errors. Guidelines can limit the number of errors and render a report more accurate. Guidelines should be the same for every interviewer, and should be developed by a group of experts who are clearly familiar with the research data obtained in the psychology of eyewitness testimony.Key-words: eyewitness testimony, interview, children, sexual abuse.Parole chiave: testimonianza oculare, intervista, bambini, abuso sessuale.

Sexual abuse is a cross-cultural phenomenon related to multiple cultural contexts including religious affiliation. The Haredi, or Orthodox Jewish community (OJC), constitutes a significant minority group of the worldwide Jewish population, characterized by cultural conservatism, steadfast loyalty to the community, and strict religious behavioral codes. To date, only few empirical studies (as opposed to multiple media reports) have dealt with the issue of sexual abuse within the OJC. Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, we conducted a systematic review of the literature on sexual abuse within the OJC and its subgroups that addresses experiences and reports of victims, perpetrators, the Jewish and general community, and professionals in the North America, Israel, and Australia. Articles were collected from peer-reviewed databases and bibliographies; 13 quantitative and qualitative articles were included in the final sample. Three themes emerged: disclosure of sexual abuse, perceptions and attitudes toward the abuse, and its implications. Results indicated that alongside several findings that were specifically grounded in the context of closed collective or religious societies and the OJC in particular, most essentially reflected universal aspects of sexual abuse. The results suggest promoting context-informed interventions based on community knowledge and resilience, together with appropriate training in order to better understand the needs of the OJC and of closed communities in general.
