This study aims to investigate the impact of earnings quality and asymmetric information on market reaction which is proxied by cumulative abnormal return (CAR). This study also attempts to analyze whether good governance is playing an important role in moderating the effects of those two independent variables on CAR. By using purposive sampling method, this study covers 125 manufacturing companies listed on Indonesian Stock Exchange for 2017-2018 period to reveal above agenda. By using generalize least square (GLS) fixed effect model, it is found that reported earnings on financial statement have meaningful information for investors. By this, investors could expect stock return by relying on this earning information. Meanwhile, asymmetric information also matters for investors to make decisions regarding stock transaction. However, independence commissioner which is predicted to have an important role for stock performance, is not proved as moderating variable in this study.

PurposeThe authors examine the impact of asymmetric information on firm's financing decisions, the feedback effect of changes in capital structure on the level of asymmetric information, and the speed of adjustments in capital structure on its target leverage.Design/methodology/approachThe authors extract the data on 280 non-financial firms listed in the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) from the DataStream. The authors implement the generalized method of moments (GMM), complemented by the fixed effect model (FEM) to estimate the model coefficients.FindingsThe authors find that asymmetric information significantly affects the financing decisions; and that on average, firms adjust 26% of the total debt toward their target capital structure. The negative effect from the difference between the observed and target changes in leverage on asymmetric information confirms that capital structure changes act as a signal for future profitability and helps the management to lower its level of asymmetric information.Originality/valueThe findings offer fresh insight into the effect of asymmetric information on financing decisions, as well as the speed of adjustment of capital structure toward its target leverage, in the context of the firms working in emerging markets like Pakistan. To the authors’ best knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the impact of asymmetric information on financing decisions that incorporate firm's age, size and the global financial crises 2007–2008. The authors construct an asymmetric information index using both accounting and finance measures of asymmetry.

The chapter examines the determinants and financial statement effect s of IFRS adoption in Nigeria. It also investigate into the impact of effect of the adoption of IFRS on accounting figures and ratios in the financial statements of 50 companies quoted in the Nigerian Stock Exchange. The determinants considered include firm's characteristics (firm size, operating cash flow, leverage, turnover, growth in turnover, profitability, liquidity and earnings quality) and corporate governance variables (board size, board independence and audit type). The data were obtained from the annual reports of companies listed in the Nigerian Stock Exchange between 2011 and 2013 and was analyzed using the ordinary least square (OLS) and logistic regression which were used to test for determinants of IFRS adoption while the independent t-test was used to examine the financial statement effects. With regard to the determinants, the empirical result indicates only profitability and earnings quality have significant but negative association with IFRS adoption. Moreover, IFRS adoption has significant effect on the return on equity.

Earnings quality refers to reported earnings to predict a firm’s future earnings, which is essential for the investor’s decision-making to understand its financial health. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of profitability as an intervening variable between institutional ownership to earnings quality. This study's population was manufacturing companies in the consumer goods industry listed on the IDX for the 2017-2019 period. The sampling method is based on criteria. The samples in this study were 15 issuers. Data analysis techniques using Smart Pls. The results showed that institutional ownership affected earnings quality. Profitability was not proven as an intervening variable on the relationship between institutional ownership and earnings quality. This finding implied that institutions that had share ownership in the company increased their supervision to reduce the manager's opportunistic behaviour.

The purpose of this study is to test the capability of managerial ownership in moderating the effect of managerial ability on earnings quality. The research sample consists of 41 manufacturing companies in Indonesia Stock Exchange and 53 in Malaysia Stock Exchange within the year of 2014–2016. Partial Least Square (PLS) method used for data analysis. The result shows that managerial ability has a positive and significant effect on earnings persistence, both in Indonesia and Malaysia. Managerial ability also has a positive and significant effect on accrual quality in both countries. Managerial ownership strengthens the effect of managerial ability on earnings persistence, but only in Malaysia. However, managerial ownership strengthens the effect of managerial ability on accrual quality in both countries. The results of this study can help investors and creditors in making decisions. Before investors invest in a company or before creditors lend funds to companies, investors and creditors need to first consider the persistence of earnings, not only see the amount of earnings the company gets to ensure that the company’s earnings quality is good and the company has good prospects in the future.

This study aims to provide empirical evidence related to the influence of family ownership, tax reform on corporate debt policy, and further prove the impact on the firm value. This study examined the effect of changes in tax rates in 2009 and 2010 on the relationship between family ownership structure and corporate debt policy. The population of this research is manufacturing companies listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange for 8 consecutive years (2006-2013), with the period of observation for 7 years (2007-2013). A period of 8 years was taken to see a company that is consistently listed on the Stock Exchange prior to the end of the observation period. The result of this study shows that tax reform from progressive tax rates to a flat rate does not affect the relationship between family ownership structure and corporate debt policy. In contrast to the year 2009, changing rate from 28% to 25% in late 2010 was a significant effect on the debt policy with the company of family ownership. Based on the results, it was found that family ownership and debt policy significantly affect the company's enterprise value. It can be concluded, the higher the family ownership, the company's value would be diminished. Instead, the company's value will increase when the company adds to its debt policy.

Keywords : debt policy, family ownership, firm value, tax reform.

This study aims to explore the impact of family ownership on the relationship among corporate social responsibility (CSR) and earning management (EM) in Pakistan. Data is collected from nonfinancial listed firms on Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSE) for the period 2009-2017. Our results of pooled ordinary least square regression indicate that CSR has significant negative impact on EM. Furthermore, results also indicate that association between CSR and EM is moderated by family ownership. Family firms which perform CSR activities are less involved in EM as compare to nonfamily firms perform CSR activities. This variation in behavior of EM in family and non-family firms can possibly be explained by socioemotional wealth theory. Keywords: Corporate Social Responsibility, Earnings Management, Family Ownership
