The objective of this study is to implement some of the Kaizen and 5S principles borrowed from Toyota's operation management systems and process improvements to help smallholder farmers become more productive and efficient. The paper systematically analyses, categorises, and reviews methodically the published literature. A series of case studies were conducted in an indoor hydroponic farm located in an urban area. The Kaizen and 5S principles in the organization have been implemented and analysed. Based on the outcomes of the case studies, it can be stressed that by the introduction and implementation of the Kaizen and 5S principles brings significant changes and improvements in the organisation in terms of increasing in effectiveness and efficiency in the operational processes, improved visual management of the process, improved safety and morale of the workers, improved housekeeping, waste elimination and standardization. The outcomes of this study have demonstrated that the Kaizen and 5S principles and techniques are equally applicable for agricultural organisations rather than manufacturing sectors.

Tiny homes are defined as a small dwelling in the form of a moveable unit, cabin or detached house which is sized to meet its occupants’ needs. Besides affordability, sustainability and minimalist lifestyle, the occupants’ demand for a cosy environment with a window or porch overlooking a garden. The objectives of the study are to investigate the benefits of utilising nature and serenity in promoting a supportive environment to achieve user well-being. Quantitative methodology was applied in this study using three case studies (CS1 at Urban area: Prototype Model of Microhouse, CS2 at Sub urban area: The Cabin Boutique Resort and SC3 at Outskirts area: Meraki Tiny House). The tool, ``Perceived Sensory Dimensions “(PSDs)” was used for respondents to evaluate the surrounding environment of the case studies by showing photos of two sensory dimension models (PSDs Nature and Serene). Close-ended questionnaires were distributed to the 21 respondents from the millennials group, to rate each perception for each case study. The results have shown that a natural and serene environment for CS3 is most preferred because of the aspirational quality of its PSDs, followed by CS2 and CS1.

Service quality has been a major preoccupation of the hospitality industry throughout the 1980s and the early 1990s. Quality management systems have been clearly identified as a means of increasing the professionalism and social competence of staff, while developments such as customer care programs and quality teams have produced notable improvements in the effectiveness and efficiency. Starting from the main economic goal of making profit in each enterprise, it is necessary to measure and to evaluate effectiveness and efficiency. The aim of this paper is to emphasize the importance and necessity of measuring two aspects of the quality of business success: effectiveness (hotel market success) and efficiency (hotel economy). The paper defines effectiveness and efficiency as well as key ratios for measuring and evaluating those two aspects of quality of business success.

<p>This thesis was designed to critically test the suitability of Jatropha curcas as a plant feedstock for liquid biofuel production in Senegal. Many countries around the globe have attempted to incorporate bioenergy into their broader energy supply mix, and liquid biofuels are a key component of a low-carbon economy to replace fossil fuels for transport and electrical generation. The Senegalese government instituted a national biofuel plan between 2007 and 2012 to achieve energy independence through biofuels with an annual production target of more than a billion liters of oil. The plan was intended to reduce problems with energy scarcity and price fluctuations, contribute to local economic growth, and expand agricultural production to degraded or otherwise fallow land. The project was largely unsuccessful, and to date there has been no significant oil production from Jatropha curcas for the national energy supply.  This research study was developed to understand the key barriers to the success of this program and mitigate the mistakes of future project developers and policymakers. Preliminary literature reviews and examples from similar endeavors in other countries suggested three main barriers that would be primary determinants of success or failure: the agronomic suitability, and therefore production and yield capacity, of Jatropha curcas to the Senegalese climate; the socio-economic challenges of integrating a broad national plan with smallholder farmers and assuring that the economics are fair for both growers and buyers; and the policy framework developed by government agencies, development organizations, and commercial interests to support an emergent biofuel industry. A mixed-method research design including document reviews, interviews and surveys, and case studies was employed to answer the key questions of why and how the Senegalese biofuel program has failed to achieve its intended goals.  Results from this study indicate that Jatropha curcas is unsuitable as a plant feedstock for liquid biofuels in Senegal at this time, due to significant shortcomings in all three key categories examined. The plant is vastly underproductive and requires considerable investment in scientific improvement of yield, pest tolerance and seed oil content; the economic gain is neither adequate to justify smallholder farmers to adopt it as an alternative to existing crops nor for project developers to generate income from fuel on the open market; and supporting policy has not been consistent or favorable enough to carry this emergent industry from nascence to maturity. There are, however, encouraging signs of resilience in two particular case studies that provide insight into how future programs could be structured, most notably in the Sine-Saloum Delta region. Further research should be devoted to specific economic schemes and innovative financing options for community focused biofuel programs.</p>

Knowledge Management Systems are increasingly becoming important to both practitioners and researchers. One area of application of such systems is the formation of organizational teams with appropriate knowledge content to solve complex and novel problems. A common predicament, however, is that teams are often formed with only partial problem domain knowledge. This study examines if teams that have partial problem domain knowledge are more effective and efficient than teams that do not have specific problem domain knowledge. It finds that partial problem domain knowledge may in fact be worse than no problem domain knowledge. Several implications for researchers and practitioners are derived from this result.

Performance management developed out of, and in part in reaction to, traditional performance appraisal systems. Despite frequent claims in the business press that performance appraisal is dying, fairly traditional appraisal systems are still common in work organizations. However, there is evidence of an ongoing shift toward performance management systems that differ from traditional performance appraisal systems in several important ways. The types of performance management systems exemplified in the case studies included in this volume place more emphasis on frequent, informal evaluation; real-time feedback; and alignment with organizational strategies and goals than is common in traditional appraisal systems. These types of performance management systems have a lot to offer, and the case studies illustrate the potential advantage of modern approaches to performance management. Unfortunately, these case studies also exemplify a deeply worrying trend in performance management: a frequent failure to even ask whether (much less to demonstrate that) performance management has any real effect on performance or effectiveness. Some recommendations are made regarding research strategies for evaluating performance management; several of the most pressing challenges in this endeavor are identified, notably the problematic status of feedback and the trade-offs involved when moving from formal appraisal systems to systems built around informal feedback.

The increasing number of cars leads to traffic congestion and limits parking issue in urban area. The narrow tilting vehicles therefore can potentially become the next generation of city cars due to its narrow width. However, due to the difficulty in leaning a narrow tilting vehicle, a drive assistance strategy is required to maintain its roll stability during a turn. This article presents an effective approach using torque vectoring method to assist the rider in balancing the narrow tilting vehicles, thus reducing the counter-steering requirements. The proposed approach is designed as the combination of two torque controllers: steer angle–based torque vectoring controller and tilting compensator–based torque vectoring controller. The steer angle–based torque vectoring controller reduces the counter-steering process via adjusting the vectoring torque based on the steering angle from the rider. Meanwhile, the tilting compensator–based torque vectoring controller develops the steer angle–based torque vectoring with an additional tilting compensator to help balancing the leaning behaviour of narrow tilting vehicles. Numerical simulations with a number of case studies have been carried out to verify the performance of designed controllers. The results imply that the counter-steering process can be eliminated and the roll stability performance can be improved with the usage of the presented approach.
