Xenobiotics are released into the environment by human activities, and they often cause problems such as environmental pollution, since most such compounds cannot be readily degraded, and have harmful effects on human beings and the natural ecosystem [...]

Up until quite recently, our contemporary society has faced various challenges and issues related to accelerated urbanization and industrialization, consumers, and organizations’ rather limited range of possibilities to completely satisfy needs and wants regarding environmental pollution, the capacity of our planet to regenerate its used goods annually and ensuring that the living conditions of future generations are considered alongside those of the current generations [...]

The article considers the issues of aquatic macrophytes’ resistance to environmental pollution. Results of model investigations aimed at revealing of alterations in photosynthetic pigments’ content in Elodea canadensis in the presence of heavy metals (nickel as an example) in the concentration gradient have been presented. Comparison of individual pollutants’ and their combinations’ action upon structural parameters of E. densa leaf has been done. It has been shown that the plants under investigation possess high adaptive potential and the ability to resist pollutants action due to alterations of structural/functional characteristics of the photosynthetic apparatus.
