Thermal management is a ubiquitous and critical engineering challenge for a broad range of applications, including combustion engines, high power electronics and chemical processing. However, conventional heat exchanger solutions are often static with limited ability to adaptively modulate heat transfer. Folding concepts from the ancient art form of origami could potentially address these challenges by providing large conducting surfaces that can also spatially reconfigure to regulate the flow and temperature field interactions with the heat transferring medium. In this study, trigonometric and nonlinear mechanical analysis techniques are applied to origami channel designs based on the “waterbomb” and Miura-ori unit cell to characterize the geometric properties of the structures as a function of folding. Both channels demonstrate a large range of flow control, with potentially enhanced mixing in the “waterbomb” channel, due to an axially varying cross-section. The results show promise for the use of origami-based heat exchanger designs for both improved passive and active control of heat transfer.

A great deal of existing jacket platforms need to be assessed in order to determine whether they can be reused or not. In allusion to the differences between the existing service platforms and the drafting ones, a methodology of system reliability-based assessment of existing jacket platform is presented and is applied for the assessments of BZ28-1 three jacket platforms which have operated for sixteen years. In terms of nonlinear mechanical analysis, correcting the statistical parameters of the sea states and considering pile-soil-structure nonlinear interaction, the mechanics characteristics of three jacket platforms subjected to extreme loads were analyzed. Based on the FEM model, with Monte Carlo simulation, the reliability of the platforms was studied. From the practical application, the method can be used to estimate the service life of the existing platforms and ensure their secure operation.

There are three working conditions namely drilling a guide hole, expanding the guide hole and pulling back pipeline in trenchless directional drilling. The position of drill string in the wellbore and loads exerted on the drill string varied in different working conditions. The models of buckling analysis of drill strings under compression, mechanical analysis of drill string under axial compression near drill bit in inclined straight section, mechanical analysis of drill string with multi-centralizers under axial compression near drill bit in inclined straight section, mechanical analysis of drill string near drill bit under axial compression in horizontal section, mechanical analysis of drill string near drill bit under axial tension in horizontal section, mechanical analysis of drill strings near drill bit under axial tension in inclined straight section and mechanical analysis of drill string in failed well are established based on the characteristic of loads and trajectories in each section. The establishment of sectionalized mechanical model of drilling tool is the fundament of further study of force analysis, deformation analysis and stress analysis.

The service performance of current dental composite materials, such as anterior and posterior restoratives and/or veneer cements, needs to be improved. As part of a comprehensive effort to find ways to improve such materials, we have launched a broad spectrum study of the physicochemical and mechanical properties of photopolymerizable or visible light cured (VLC) dental composites. The commercially available VLC materials being studied are shown in Table 1. A generic or neat resin VLC system is also being characterized by SEM and TEM, to more fully understand formulation variables and their effects on properties. At a recent dental research meeting, we reported on the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) characterization of the materials in Table 1. It was shown by DSC and DMA that the materials are substantially undercured by commonly used VLC techniques. Post curing in an oral cavity or a dry environment at 37 to 50°C for 7 or more hours substantially enhances the cure of the materials.
