This descriptive study was designed to provide researchers and educators with baseline data about characteristics of show choirs and information regarding the role the show choir plays in the high school choral department. Seventy directors of varsity mixed show choirs across the nation responded to a researcher-constructed survey designed to examine the role, logistics, musical and pedagogical characteristics and potential benefits and drawbacks of these ensembles. Results indicated that the participants believed that the purpose of the show choir was to make sure that students are receiving a wellrounded choral experience by exposing them to different musical genres, while allowing for the inclusion of multiple disciplines like dance, band and theatre. Data indicated the considerable amounts of time and money expended on this ensemble. The results showed that the directors taught proper vocal technique and that the students were learning about the basics of singing even while being exposed to pop, rock and Broadway style music. Participants indicated that through the show choir, the students were learning more than just music. This includes life skills that they can use not only while in school but also once they graduate, such as how to be a part of a team and how to present themselves in front of an audience. The biggest drawbacks reported were time commitments for the director and ensemble. The findings of this study provide educational reasons in support of the role the show choir plays in the choral curriculum, while the logistical data could serve as a baseline against which teachers, administrators and school districts might compare their own programs with a national sample of responses.

Background: Previous research findings from Project Active Teen demonstrated the effectiveness of high school conceptual physical education (CPE) in promoting active lifestyles. Method: This study followed Project Active Teen participants 20 years after graduation from high school and 24 years after taking a CPE class. Physical activity behaviors were assessed using the same procedures as previous Project Active Teen studies. Activity patterns were compared with patterns while in high school and shortly after high school graduation. Activity patterns were also compared with a national sample of age-equivalent adults. Results: Twenty years after high school graduation, former CPE students were less likely to be inactive and more likely to be moderately active than when in high school and were less likely to be inactive and more likely to be moderately active than national sample age-equivalent peers. They were typically not more vigorously physically active than comparison groups. Conclusion: Results support the long-term effectiveness of CPE in reducing inactive behavior and promoting moderate physical activity later in life.

This study endeavored to establish trends in the re-enforcing factor related to the consumption of alcoholic beverages among high school students in Liberia, using an experimental research design. A sample of 440 students from two selected schools was determined using Cochran’s formula. A sixteen item questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of 0.70 was administered to the 440 students to identify those who drink alcohol. Applying G Power formula, 84 students were randomly selected out of the 170 students who drink alcohol as participants. Another validated questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of 0.76 was used to collect data from the field. Descriptive statistics and t-test were used to analyze the data. The study concludes that the use of the Alcohol and Life Skills Training Model, which was employed to the experimental group is an effective educational tool to prepare students to make responsible decision about abstaining from drinking alcoholic beverages than the HIV/ AIDS Model which was employed to the control group. It is therefore recommended that the Government of Liberia should adopt the Alcohol and Life Skills Training Model into the National High School Curriculum in order to prevent and control the consumption of alcohol by students in high schools. Secondly, researchers and the Ministry of Education in conjunction with other Ministries such as Health and Youth should conduct further research on a wider scale on alcohol consumption among the youth, including the in-school and the out of school adolescents in Liberia.

The authors examine a national sample of 80 collective bargaining agreements negotiated in 1981–82 by teacher organizations and school boards in large U.S. public school districts to determine how great was the educational policy content of those agreements. They find that educational policy provisions, defined as those that affect educational programs more than teachers' working conditions, are far more extensive than previous studies suggest. Of the contracts sampled, 46 percent are found to contain provisions regulating the curriculum; 59 percent, provisions regulating student placement; and 96 percent, provisions regulating teacher placement. The authors conclude that this extensive policy bargaining has reduced the capacity of many school districts to respond to changing expectations for public education.
