Previous research focused on characteristics of effective teachers, teacher recruitment or new pathways to teaching (Ball and Forzani, 2009; Ronfeldt et. al., 2014). However, there is a gap in the research regarding the best path to prepare secondary math teachers. Universities create a customized path of preparation based on their beliefs within the scope of a set of standards given by organizations such as the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics or National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. Further research supports the necessity for both content and pedagogical knowledge (Ball, 2000; Graham and Fennell, 2001; NCATE, 2010; Thames and Ball, 2010). Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative case study pursues to increase the research by uncovering perceptions of secondary math teacher preparation with the standards, content knowledge, and content pedagogical knowledge. The study included two universities? programs to gain awareness as to the interpretations of novice teachers, cooperating teachers, and University professors of the pre-service training program used to prepare future secondary mathematics educators. The findings suggest: while only the Mathematics Education Professor at both Universities were the only study participants to have a vast knowledge of the standards it did not seem to impede on the overall preparation of the novice teacher. Novice and Cooperating teachers lacked the vision for the purpose and value of upper level math classes required for the degree. Both Novice and Cooperating Teachers wanted an increase in opportunities for real-world content pedagogical situations along with differentiation, co-teaching, and Special Education. Novice teachers acknowledged the need for relationships with University professors and peers in their path toward preparation. Lastly, Mathematics Education Professors stated value in making connections between courses and research to high school math. Furthermore, the finding suggest for teacher preparation program: to prepare secondary math teachers for the current culture of mathematics education, content and pedagogical courses should not be separated and a push to increase program enrollment should be a priority.

Elementary or first-year algebra is the keystone subject in all of secondary mathematics. It is formally studied by students from grade levels as early as seventh grade and as late as college, but begun and completed more often in ninth grade than at any other time. The main purpose of this article is to question that timing. The conclusion to be argued here is that most students should begin the study of algebra one year earlier than they now do. This conclusion is contrary to a recommendation currently subscribed to by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and to the views of a number of leaders in mathematics education. I attempt to show here that these leaders have been misguided.

APOS (Action-Process-Object-Schema) learning theory is the result of the studies of a mathematics education research group named Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education Community (RUMEC), whose aim is to examine students’ level of comprehending university mathematics subjects. This study aimed to investigate how secondary mathematics education pre-service teachers in a public university structured the geometric dimension of the concept of derivative in their minds in the context of the components of the APOS theory. As data collection tools, questions developed by Çekmez [1] based on the genetic decomposition of Asiala, Dubinsky, Cottrill and Schwingendorf [2] for the geometric dimension of derivatives were used. The study revealed that secondary mathematics education pre-service teachers did not have the mental structures related to this topic and could not learn it at the desired level.

Abstract The pandemic situation forces the educational system to respond to a variety of issues. During the pandemic, it’s essential to learn more about Technological-Pedagogical-Content-Knowledge (TPACK) and how it can be incorporated into pre-service physics teacher preparation. This qualitative research collects data from ten online teaching videos and ten offline teaching videos of 20 pre-service physics teachers. This study attempts to comprehend the appearance of each TPACK component by analyzing the videos with an observation sheet. The observation sheet explored seven components of TPACK, which are Content Knowledge (CK), Pedagogical Knowledge (PK), Technological Knowledge (TK), Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (PCK), Technological and Content Knowledge (TCK), Technological and Pedagogical Knowledge (TPK), and the last is Technological, Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) itself. The result showed that pre-service teachers were determined good TPACK skills, but lacked in certain components. From the result, in both online and offline microteaching, participants rarely showed their TPK. In online activities, it is also seen that participants were faced difficulties in applying their PCK. The different nature of online and offline microteaching drives the need for teacher education institutions to plan and implement microteaching in the pedagogical courses to improve pre-service teachers’ TPACK in both situations.

Most of the Nepali students have been widely found using different unauthorized book and study materials for achieving good results in their exams in secondary levels as well as higher levels of education. Theseunauthorized books and study materials have been found usefulas they are mostly exam oriented and have the detailed worked out questions and answers from the past years asked by the examination board of Nepal.A study was conducted to examine the usefulness of such materials in mathematics of secondary level education. It was also aimed to assess the beliefs of students, parents and teachers on the use of unauthorized study materials and achieve success in the secondary mathematics education in Nepal. By using semi-structured questionnaire with students and key informant interviews with selected parents/guardians and mathematics teachers, the researcher has explored the achievements of students and beliefs and attitudes of students along with perspectives of their parents and math teachers.

The integration of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in classrooms has been a challenge for the educational systems that aim to cope with the needs and the demands of the 21st century. The TPACK framework represents the knowledge needed by teachers bringing together content knowledge, technological knowledge and pedagogical knowledge with the aim of integrating ICTs into teaching-learning processes. The aim of this study is to determine the primary science teachers’ perceptions of technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) addressing teachers’ perceptions of the affordances of technology application in instruction. A total of 133 prımary science teachers in Malaysia were surveyed (Female= 67, Male= 66). Data were collected through “Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge” (TPACK) scale. The questionnaire consisted of 47 questions about TPACK and is based on the survey instrument developed by Schmidt et al. (2009). TPACK involving the seven factors of technological knowledge (TK), pedagogical knowledge (PK), content knowledge (CK), technological content knowledge (TCK), technological pedagogical knowledge (TPK), pedagogical content knowledge (PCK), as well as synthesized knowledge of technology, pedagogy, and content (TPC). The findings indicate that primary science teachers perceive higher self-confidence in pedagogical knowledge in general. Further, no differences between science teachers’ perceptions according to thier gender, while there are diferences between the teachers perceptions of PK, CK, and PCK accordıng to their age
